Childhood and Early Life[edit]

Born in Upney, East London, I spent my early life in South Ockendon Essex until the age of nineteen when I moved to Battersea and then Guildford to study at Surrey University. I completed a four-year sandwich course in Electronic and Electrical Engineering, graduating in 1971 with a B.Sc degree.

Career and later life[edit]

1971: My first job was with W & T Avery Ltd who manufactured weighing machines, and were located in Smethwick, Birmingham. I worked on the first fully electronic weighbridge produced by this company.

1972: I joined Rediffusion Consumer Electronics in Chessington, Surrey. I worked in their Design & Development Laboratories and helped to development new models of television and support existing designs.

1976: Moved to EMI Electronics (Systems & Weapons Division) at Feltham. My main responsibility was to test sub-assemblies and the complete fuze that went into Britain's free-fall nuclear bomb WE177.

1978: Internal transfer to EMI Medical, working on x-ray tomography scanners for brain and body use.
