A Joalduna is a traditional character of the Basque culture, especially in some small villages of the north of Navarre: Ituren and Zubieta. His work is to shake some cowbells to warm people about the arrival of the carnivals, which are yearly celebrated at the last weekend of january.
Name[edit]
Although the original name is Joaldun, there are other ways to refer to this character: kaldurro, ttuntturro, txantxurro... However, the most used but not totally correct name is Zanpantzar.
Zanpantzar[edit]
The name Zanpantzar has become more common over the years, even if nobody in Zubieta or Ituren calls them that way. The meanings of Zanpantzar, then, would be:
- A doll made of straw and fern, which is famous because of his trial, penalty, and burn in the carnivals of some basque villages. This process always carries a cleaning ritual that burns the diseases at the same time as the doll.
- The carnivals.
Costume[edit]
The original suit of a Zanpantzar has some characteristics in common, even though nowadays each group has modified the costume. So the features would be:
- A hat named Tunturro in the head, with colourful ribbons and feathers.
- A red scarf in the neck.
- A shirt made of sheep skin.
- Two cowbells in the waist.
- A white skirt.
- A sprinkler made of the hair of the horse in the right hand.
