Colesevelam, sold under the brand name Welchol among others, is a medication used to treat high cholesterol.[1] Statins are generally preferred for this use.[2] Effects on life expectancy are unclear.[1] It may also be used for type 2 diabetes.[2] It is taken by mouth.[1]

Common side effects include constipation, heart burn, and nausea.[1] Other side effects may include pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, and fat soluble vitamin deficiency.[1] While there is no evidence of harm in pregnancy, such use has not been well studied.[3] It is a bile acid sequestrant.[1]

Colesevelam was approved for medical use in the United States in 2000 and Europe in 2004.[1][4] It is available as a generic medication.[5] In the United Kingdom a month of treatment costs the NHS about £115 as of 2021.[6] This amount in the United States costs about 70 USD.[5]
