Anakinra, sold under the brand name Kineret, is a medication used to treat rheumatoid arthritis, cryopyrin-associated periodic syndromes, familial Mediterranean fever, and Still's disease.[3] It is also used in people with COVID-19 who require oxygen therapy.[3] It is given by injection under the skin.[3]

Common side effects include pain at the site of injection, upper respiratory tract infection, headache, nausea, joint pain, and fever.[4] Other side effects may include anaphylaxis.[4] Safety in pregnancy is unclear.[4] It is a recombinant version of the interleukin 1 receptor antagonist protein which blocks the effects of interleukin 1.[3][4]

Anakinra was approved for medical use in the United States in 2001 and Europe in 2002.[4][3] In the United Kingdom a week of medication costs the NHS about £180 as of 2021.[5] This amount in the United States costs about 1,250 USD.[6]
