ICE is an Israeli news portal and current affairs site owned since November 2019 by Leon Ajami.

History[edit]

In October 1999, the "ice" website was founded by the publisher of "HaTikshoret" magazine Yuval Sigler,[1] as the online version of the fax newspaper "Namer Shel Nayyar," which Sigler had published since 1991. It was Israel's first website focusing on marketing and advertising. The website's name was an acronym for its initial coverage areas: "Information, Communication, Entertainment".

In March 2002, the site revamped its appearance and changed its revenue model. Its content was opened to the general public, and articles appearing in the "Main Newsroom" (called "Ice News") were offered for free. Concurrently, the "Subscriptions" category was launched, containing a directory of managerial appointments in major Israeli companies and the "Ice Plus" corner, which merged the free company index, a paid job board, a search engine for locating campaigns aired over the years, and details on industry events. In February 2006, the Tel Aviv Magistrates' Court ruled that "Ice" must compensate a photographer whose work was copied without permission.[2]

Co-Manage Group[edit]

Until 2009, the "Ice" website operated as the online version of the daily newspaper created by Sigler, distributed via fax. In November of that year, Sigler sold the website to the "Co-Manage" group. Following the acquisition, "Ice" merged with the marketing and advertising site of "Bizportal", launched in August 2006 in partnership with Yifat Advertising Control. After the merger, a comment system was introduced on the site for the first time.

In March 2018, the site launched a new graphic package, and in the process, replaced its logo. For the first time since its establishment, the site was divided into three parts: a main headline, a right strip with news, opinion columns, and video articles, and a left strip with rating data and additional tools. In the redesign, a mobile version was also launched.[4]

In November 2019, Co-Manage sold the site to "Yu Kela" owned by Leon Ajami.[1] Initially, it was decided that the site would continue in a similar format,[5] but during that year, some of the veteran team members, including Alexander Katz, who had served as the site's editor-in-chief for a decade, resigned.[1]

In early 2021, journalist Nir Kipnis was appointed as the editor-in-chief. Less than a month after his appointment, he surprisingly resigned and Yehuda Levinger was appointed to replace him.
