After the Dutch East India Company took Amboina in February 1605, in the same year on 19 May, together with the Sultanate of Ternate, they captured the last Portuguese fortification on the island of Tidore. Following a failed Spanish siege in Ternate in 1603, this battle would trigger another Spanish conquest of Maluku in 1606.
