"Mogamigawa"(最上川)is prefecture song of Yamagata Prefecture, one of the prefectures of the Japan. The lyrics are made by Emperor Showa, and the music is composed by Akataro Shimazaki.

History[edit]

In October 1925 (Taisho 14), when Emperor Showa was crown prince, it was a waka poem that was recited about the scene of the Mogami River on the occasion of the visit to Yamagata Prefecture. The original song was sung at the beginning of the song festival in 1926 (Taisho 15) based on the imperial title "Kasui Kiyoshi". 。In 1929 (Showa 4) after the accession to the throne of Emperor Showa, it was decided that this song performed by the Yamagata Prefectural Education Association should be the prefectural song, and in October 1930 (Showa 5), with the permission of the Imperial Household Ministry, Professor Akataro Shimazaki of the Tokyo Music School was asked to compose it, and the song was completed.。

After WW2[edit]

Before the end of the Pacific War in 1945 (Showa 20), it was called "Three Great Prefectural Songs of Japan" along with "Shinano no Kuni" and "Akita Kenminka", but under the Allied occupation, like "Kikuchi Jinchu no uta" Some prefectural songs were banned by order of the Allied Forces Supreme Commander General Headquarters (GHQ / SCAP), this song was also refrained from playing as a self-restraint measure. Along with that, the Yamagata Prefecture Branch of the Constitution Promotion Association solicited the lyrics of the new "Yamagata Prefecture Song" to be performed at the Japan Constitution Enactment Commemorative Ceremony on May 3, 1947 (Showa 22) as part of the new constitution promotion activities, and high school teacher and Araragi poet Tomokazu Hara, applied under the name of "Hara Makoto" "Asagumo no" was adopted. The song was composed by Kunihiko Hashimoto at the request and performed this new prefectural anthem at the constitutional establishment ceremony, but this new prefectural song was not widely accepted by the people of the prefecture who had been accustomed to the "Mogamigawa" since before the war, and was forgotten after the San Francisco Peace Treaty came into effect. Therefore, in the 1960s, "Mogami River" was once again treated as a prefectural song, although it was "customary".。

Officially established as a prefectural song[edit]

In 1981 (Showa 56), the prefectural assembly asked a question about the prefectural song, and the establishment of the new prefectural folk song was discussed, but the opinions calling for the enactment of the new prefectural song and the opinion supporting the "Mogamigawa" that has been popular since before the war were opposed, and finally Governor Itagaki Seiichiro decided to establish "Mogamigawa" as the official "Yamagata Prefecture People's Song" on March 31, 1982 (Showa 57).。On April 1, 1986 (Showa 61), Yamagata Broadcasting System (YBC) began to play this song at the start of TV broadcasting, and this continues to this day.
