The Tsukuno Danjiri Matsuri (津久野だんじり祭), held in Tsukuno, Nishi-ku, Sakai, Osaka, is one of the Danjiri festivals in Japan. The festival is a parade involving large wooden shrine floats that are pulled at a high speed by a large team of men. The float is called 'Danjiri (だんじり)'.

Summary[edit]

The Tsukuno Danjiri Festival is held in October and is held by the Tsukuno Danjiri Association, in which 7 Danjiri owned by the neighbourhood association around Tsukuno Town participate.[1] The Tsukuno Danjiri Parades are held on the roads surrounding each neighbourhood association and around in front of JR Tsukuno Station and the Nishi-ku Danjiri Parade held around the Nishi Ward Office (held jointly by the Tsukuno Danjiri Association and the Ōtori Danjiri Association of Ōtori Danjiri Festival ).[1] About 200 lanterns are attached to the Danjiri at night. When a Danjiri makes a right-angle turn at a corner or at an intersection at high speed, it is called 'Yarimawashi (やりまわし)', and this 'Yarimawashi' is the highlight of the Danjiri Festival.[2] It's easy to say, but it's not easy to operate a danjiri that weighs over 4 tons while running. For that reason, a strong sense of solidarity among the people who participate in the festival is necessary.

Danjiris of each neighborhood association[edit]

There are 7 Danjiri in total, 4 residents' associations (Ōhigashi (大東), Miyayama(宮山), Nishigumi (西組), Nakagumi (中組)) in Tsukuno Town and 3 residents' associations in Kōno Town (神野町), Shimoda Town (下田町), and Kamiishi-Ichino Town (神石市之町).

Miyairi[edit]

When the Danjiri enters the grounds of a shrine and the Shinto priest prays for safety, it is called ’Miyairi (宮入り)’. Miyairi takes place on Saturday morning of the festival. It is one of the traditional events in the Danjiri festival.

Parade[edit]

  • Tsukuno Danjiri Parades[1]
    • Seven Danjiri go around the road in front of JR Tsukuno Station and perform ’Yarimawashi' one after another.
  • Nishi-Ku Danjiri Parade[3]
    • It held jointly by the Tsukuno Danjiri Association and the Otori Danjiri Association of Otori Danjiri Festival. It is a spectacular parade with 17 Danjiri.

Parade at night[edit]

At night, about 200 lanterns are attached to the danjiri, and a Lantern Parade (灯入れ曳行, Hiire-Eikō) is held around in front of Tsukuno Station from around 7:00 pm.  At the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival, Yarimawashi is not performed at night, but at the Tsukuno Danjiri Festival, Yarimawashi is also performed during the Lantern Parade.
