DYK ENGVAR[edit]

I suggest adding a DYK nomination approval criterion and checkpoint for ENGVAR neutrality. The objective is to have the hook(s) evaluated for elements that might first be reported in relatively high volume as errors on the Main Page by users strongly associated with either American or British English (but not both) and misinterpreting an acceptable expression in the other variation.
For example, a hook today (2018-09-03) concerned visits by American baseball umpires to hospitals, where they present children with "stuffed animals", a standard term in the U.S., at least, for toy animals filled with a plush material, such as a teddy bear. This was interpreted by one user as meaning the product of a taxidermist and taken to be an error. I am American and had no idea that "stuffed animals" was not a universally understood term.
An admin mentioned that an attempt is made in ITN, for example, to avoid things like "England defeat Germany" with respect to football/soccer, which most Americans would consider to be an error, by rewriting the blurb to avoid the expression.
I presume such an evaluation would require review by an editor who is strongly "bilingual" and could catch these problems at the nomination approval stage. Jmar67 (talk) 21:52, 3 September 2018 (UTC)

While he had served as concert master in Weimar before, he became Kapellmeister in Köthen, directing a qualified musical ensemble.[1] The prince was

She[edit]

There is always a great deal of bustle around her. There is usually a gang of men about. She has a waist and stays. It takes a lot of paint to keep her good looking. It's not the initial expense that breaks you, it's the upkeep. She can be all decked out. It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly, and without a man at the helm she is absolutely uncontrollable. She shows her topsides, hides her bottom, and when coming into port always heads for the buoys.

Huahine[edit]

Hostilities have resumed on Huahine. On the 18th of this month, Teriitaria attacked Teururai with force. His partisans, armed with spears in three columns and burning all the huts on their way, advanced up to Haeretere, Tatehau and the Church, positions they occupied and where heavy fighting took place. Pushed back with losses all along the line by the people of Teururai, they took flight and fought in retreat, pulling back from hut to hut up to the house of Teriitaria, which despite a final effort fell to Teururai. The rout then ended and the conquered party surrendered unconditionally the next day. Teriiaria and his family fled. There were seven dead and twenty injured.

"The movement recalls themes from the first movement and is set for the same forces of all performers. It ends with an uplifting fugue in a major key on the word "Amen"." I do not understand "the same forces for all performers". That is not in the Houston ref. Listening to the video, I would not call the upward progressions in the strings a "fugue", as Houston says. I also commented out "of considerable complexity" (also not in Houston and doesn't seem to apply here). Can someone comment? Jmar67 (talk) 11:03, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

First page of Bach's Christmas Oratorio, the cantata Jauchzet, frohlocket!

A comma would avoid the possible interpretation that it was his first robbery in Galatin, but that is not a likely inference IMHO and the comma would interrupt the flow. I doubt that MOS addresses such a situation. Jmar67 (talk) 00:52, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

Translation[edit]

==[edit]

And whether we like it or not, it must be said that there was nevertheless always a "Red Band" (Rote Kapelle): communists who in fact also were in this fight and died as victims of National Socialism. Whatever spirit guided them and whatever we might think of their specific intentions and talk today, they didn't want to be part of what the Nazis were planning but rather to draw a line between themselves and the corrupt and pernicious Nazi domination and put an end to it.

[...] If they had succeeded, it could have meant that, to a very great extent, further human and also material sacrifice would no longer have been necessary. They didn't succeed. And that was due not only to them but also to the fact that so few in Germany stood ready to help them and absolutely no one on the outside sympathized with them or provided meaningful support.
