Jim Hale Born and raised in New Jersey, Jim Hale is a writer and teacher in Juneau, Alaska. He studied early English literature at Rutgers University and has taught at several colleges and universities, most recently at the University of Alaska Southeast.

For more than two years (September 2014 to December 2016), he published a bi-weekly column "On Writing" in the Juneau Empire/Capital City Weekly. The column won the Alaska Press Club's Suzan Nightingale Award for best column in 2015 and again in 2016. Hale stopped writing the column after a disagreement with the newspaper's editors over censorship of one of his columns.

Hale also teaches one-day basic and advanced professional writing seminars for people who have to write at their jobs and want to do better.
