On 12-18 October 2022 Akahata / Black Island, a new active stratovolcano-shield volcano hybrid island in New Zealand's Waitematā Harbour region explosively erupted. The island is the newest volcanic center in the Auckland volcanic field, which sits right on top of Auckland, and resulted in 1 person being killed during the eruption. A further 29 people suffered injuries, with the majority needing intensive care for severe ash inhalation. The ongoing seismic and volcanic activity in the area as well as heavy rainfall, low visibility and toxic gases hampered recovery efforts or clean up in Auckland over the week following the incident.
