@Itcouldbepossible: Welcome to your adoption school. As I mentioned earlier, there are two ways we can proceed.

The first is to do courses and assignments, which upon completion, you will graduate and have a good working knowledge of Wikipedia's policies and processes, and should have no difficulty understanding and dealing with 99% of the the things you'll encounter on this site.

The second is a hands-off approach where I simply review your contributions and offer feedback as you edit, and you ask questions whenever you need guidance. There will be no 'official' graduating with this option, and we will complete the mentorship once you have reached a certain agreed upon level of experience.

Please let me know which you would prefer. ––FormalDude talk 04:04, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

@Itcouldbepossible: Alright, we will pursue the second option for now. We can start the first option at anytime, it is fine with me to do both at simultaneously. I'll start two sections below, one for you to ask questions (about anything), and another for me to comment and leave feedback on your contributions. Please feel free to reply here from now on instead of using my talk page. ––FormalDude talk 03:14, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Thanks for accepting me as a student. Would you please analyze my yesterday's contributions and give me some feedback? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 07:49, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
Itcouldbepossible, I've started leaving some feedback below. Please watchlist and bookmark this page for easy access. ––FormalDude talk 22:05, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Yes, I have already done so. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:00, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Feedback[edit]

  • I've noticed you are draftifying articles (moving articles from mainspace to draftspace). Typically this is only supposed to be done by New Page Reviewers. Several of your draftifys should not have been done, they should have simply been tagged for WP:CSD. For example, Draft:Abdul Wadud Mahsud should have been tagged CSD A3. For now, please stop moving mainspace articles to draftspace, or check with me beforehand. ––FormalDude talk 15:18, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
  • You should archive your talk page, it's getting long. I can setup a bot to do it for you, if you'd like? ––FormalDude talk 01:11, 5 February 2022 (UTC)
Oops, I am really sorry. I did not see your ping at the beginning. I draftified the pages, then I saw your ping. I am really really sorry.
The draft that you are talking about, I thought there might be development in the future, so I moved it back to draftspace. I am really sorry that I did not see your ping at the beginning. Ok, I will ask you in the future. But when will you allow me to drafify pages on my own? Sorry for not seeing your ping before starting to work. I actually start my day doing a few general things and that includes curating new pages. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:00, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
I would like to check off a couple draftifys before you start doing them on your own. If you see another article you want to move to draftspace, let me know. ––FormalDude talk 19:55, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Ok, so today I want to draftify the following:
Tiernan Killeen
Trans Am Series Australia
Tyler Peters
Shuaiby
Parenchymia
1987 Australian Rally Championship
Ông Trời
How does it go? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 02:35, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
But I draftified Draft:Sule Salifu, because I was really sure about it. Feel free to comment on this draftification.ItcouldbepossibleTalk 07:58, 7 February 2022 (UTC)
Draft:Sule Salifu is good.
Tiernan Killeen has been proposed for deletion, do not draftify.
Trans Am Series Australia has already been drafted.
Tyler Peters This one should probably be a PROD.
Shuaiby PROD
Parenchymia PROD
1987 Australian Rally Championship PROD
Ông Trời PROD

@Itcouldbepossible: What do you think about archiving your talk page? ––FormalDude talk 02:50, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: A good idea, but I don't want to do it now. I want keep the archives of 6 months first and then the archives of the next 6 months, and so forth. And also did you check your mail? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 03:27, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
@Itcouldbepossible: Yes, I replied to your email. ––FormalDude talk 03:45, 8 February 2022 (UTC)

Questions[edit]

  • My first question. How did you accept me as your student? Is there such a page? I also got a notification that said "FormalDude is your new mentor. Say hi to your new mentor!". Did you send it? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 07:51, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
    • Yes, I sent that notification. There's a page for mentors to assign students. ––FormalDude talk 15:12, 4 February 2022 (UTC)
  • I have read WP:SNOW but cannot understand it properly. Would you take some time to explain me things. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:02, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
    • The "snowball act" works when users use their common sense to stop things which don't have a snowball's chance in hell of passing. (A snowball in hell would instantly melt.) The snowball act says:
If an issue doesn't even have a snowball's chance in hell of passing, then there is no need to run it.
The snowball clause is not a rule, but it is designed to keep editors from using Wikipedia policies and guidelines to delay a decision by making a long debate. ––FormalDude talk 19:59, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
  • I have seen checkusers say a sleeper check is necessary. My question is what is this so called 'sleeper check'? And also why do we need to be 18 years or older to become a checkuser? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 12:02, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
    • A sleeper check is when CheckUsers use the tool to search for other sockpuppets. It's normally done when there is high likelihood other sockpuppets exist. Checkusers need to be 18 years of age because they handle sensitive and personal information. ––FormalDude talk 19:59, 6 February 2022 (UTC)
Ok, but what type of sensitive and personal information does checkusers handle? I thought they only had the IP addresses. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 02:38, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

08 Feb 2022[edit]

Questions[edit]

Now I am going to create sections for each day. It is really getting clumsy the other way. FormalDude you can reject this idea if you have any problem.

  1. You said that checkusers handle sensitive and personal data. What sensitive data does checkusers handle?
The CheckUser feature facilitates access to non-public information like IP addresses. ––FormalDude talk 05:38, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Yes but how much can be known from IP addresses? It only gives a rough geographical location. Then why are IP addresses so vital? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:30, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
@Itcouldbepossible: An IP address gives geolocation data that is considered private for editors with Wikipedia accounts. ––FormalDude talk 20:19, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: Yes but they are not super detailed. For example my IP is 43.252.248.86. How much can you know from it? You can at the maximum know that I am from Kolkata and I hope you can see how much big the place is. So does it really mean a lot? You won't know actually where I live. Now I might be acting too smart, but I think that this checkusers have to be 18 years or older policy is total rubish. You possibly won't come from your country to India to attack me, isn't it. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:09, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
PS: And I don't have problem revealing my IP.
I'm going to have someone who's more experienced in the world of CheckUsers answer this for you. ––FormalDude talk 07:00, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
Hi ICBP! Formal asked me to come answer this given my experience as an SPI clerk. To answer your questions:
    1. Your IP address can tell people a lot. Using some tools I have access to, I'm able to get your coordinates to within 2.5km. I can see that there's about 25 devices on your network. I'm also able to see that someone on your network is an endpoint for a pretty advanced proxying service. If no one intentionally has that set up, you might want to run some virus scans, or see if anyone's running any shady software—the one time this happened to me, it turned out to be a free VPN service I was using, which I should have known was too good to be true. (Although the tools I'm looking at also tell me that no one on your network uses a VPN.) Seriously, look into that, because sooner or later your IP will wind up blocked, or, worse, some LTA will wind up proxying through your IP, and a CU will think you're them.
    2. The fact that I can see that should tell you part of why IPs are so private. In some circumstances, it is possible to tell someone's exact address from their IP. In other cases, that can be one ingredient of several used to pinpoint someone's exact identity. For instance, my IP address narrows down my location to a specific part of my county, and I'm pretty sure I'm the only person in this area named Tamzin.
    3. While you may feel that someone won't track someone down from Wikipedia to hurt them, that's not a guarantee. There have been cases of it happening. (Since I know you'll ask for examples, I'll say in advance that there are none I am at liberty to discuss.)
    4. The reason CheckUsers must be 18, as I understand it, is that they need to be able to sign a contract with the Wikimedia Foundation, and in the United States people under the age of 18 cannot sign contracts.
I hope this answers your questions. If you're now reconsidering your decision to share your IP, you can remove it and contact Oversight to have it removed from this page's history. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 07:23, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
Tamzin I am really grateful to you that you for your detailed explanation. But let me tell you that if you are using NMap to get information about my IP, then you are getting wrong information. From the little knowledge I about about networking, I know that NMap does not have accurate data, though ethical hackers use it for Pentesting. Secondly, you first say "I'm also able to see that someone on your network is an endpoint for a pretty advanced proxying service", but then you say "Although the tools I'm looking at also tell me that no one on your network uses a VPN", so then what does it mean? Both have different meanings. I have Quick Heal Total Security installed and I run scans on my network everyday. And if you are getting my coordinates, then can you tell me where I live in Kolkata? I really don't have problem if people knows me. Thats a guarantee. And thanks for showing your concern regarding sharing my IP. But until and unless you give me more perfect data, I think there is no need to suppress edits. And sorry for bothering you with loads of my questions. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 08:04, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
@Itcouldbepossible: Since you're asking, the service I'm using says that you're in Maheshtala, within 2.5km of 22°28′41″N 88°13′13″E / 22.478°N 88.2202°E / 22.478; 88.2202. If that's inaccurate, well, that's Indian IPs for you. Even premium services have trouble keeping up with them sometimes. I'll concede it's probably less of a self-doxx to disclose your IP if you live in West Bengal than if you live in, say, the U.S. or UK, which typically have more reliable geolocation etc. (Although not always. Anyone who CU'd my account right now, if they naïvely trusted geolocation, would think I spent part of the past month in Philadelphia, a city I live several hours from. In fact, I was just on a different network than usual, one that has very unreliable geolocation even with premium-quality services. As to security, well, your IP is probably dynamic (almost all Indian IPs are), so it's possible that the malware is on the computer of some person you've never met who happens to sometimes be on your IP. In which case, not much you can do, I suppose. If some LTA does wind up getting the IP or range blocked, well, there's a reason a whole lot of Indian editors have IPBE. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 08:15, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
@Tamzin: Thanks Tamzin for taking time to answer my question. But sorry to say you are wrong. I live in Rajpur Sonarpur (again that is a big place, and it does not indicate a specific person or house), far from Maheshtala or Budge Budge, almost 15 KM away. And my IP is highly dynamic. Alliance broadband has setup its DHCP server like mad. The IPs are only given for 6 hours as a lease. So no hope of tracing me. At one place you said Seriously, look into that, because sooner or later your IP will wind up blocked, or, worse, some LTA will wind up proxying through your IP, and a CU will think you're them. What does it mean? What is proxying through IP? Sorry for being like this, but my questions doesn't end easily. I wonder how you people know so much. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 09:06, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
@Itcouldbepossible: Ah. Like I said, it's less reliable in India than other places. Still, accurate high-precision results are available in many places, so that's why IPs are considered sensitive. As to proxy stuff, I realize I didn't answer your question earlier. What I meant is: No one on your IP has been detected using a VPN, but someone on your IP has a device that is an end point for a VPN. So in other words random other traffic is being routed through that device. The upshot for you is that if some long-term abuser winds up proxying through that person's computer, it would look like you're sharing an IP with that person. But, maybe a bit hyperbolic of me to say you could get mistakenly blocked; our CUs are usually very good at catching that kind of false positive. The greater issue is that, depending on the level of abuse occurring, a CU reviewing such a case might say, "Oh, that IP has proxying software on it," and block it for a good while under WP:NOP. But in that case, that's what IPBE is for. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she/they) 09:20, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  2. What shall I write in PROD and why not draftify the PROD artcles?
PROD is done for uncontroversial deletions. It is the next step up from draftification. Draftify should only be used if there is potentially salvageable content. Articles with no references or no verifiable claim of notability can be PROD'd. You would write the reason it should be deleted. BLP PROD is slightly different as it is only for unsourced articles. ––FormalDude talk 05:38, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Ok I got your point. But someone once told me that it is best to draftify such articles to respect others hard work and also give them a chance to improve their article. I don't remember who said it, but I remember it. Please provide your views regarding this matter. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:30, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
My view is that draftify should only occur if there is material worth saving. If there's not material worth saving, it doesn't need to be draftifyed. ––FormalDude talk 20:15, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Ok, got it. But as I see from the last message on my talk page, I think I am drafifying right things. But still since you are my mentor I would listen to you. From now on I will drafify articles which might be notable, and CSD A3 the others. Object if necessary. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:09, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  3. I want to archive my talk page such that each archive folder has archives of 6 months, then the next has archives of the next 6 months, and so forth. The first message on my talk page was on September 30,2021. So I want the first archive folder to have archives of messages from September 30, 2021 to March 30, 2022. Can you help me do this? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 04:55, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
Sure, we can do that. ––FormalDude talk 05:38, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude So then can you do it either yourself or tell a bot. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:30, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
Itcouldbepossible We'll have to wait until March 30th unless you want the first archive to consist of everything on your talk page right now. ––FormalDude talk 20:15, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: Ok, but why cannot we create an archive folder and start moving topics from the beginning of my talk page to the archive. We will move all the archives to that folder until 30th March. Then we will create archive 2, and start moving the next 6 months talk page discussions to that, and like this. And also, please see that there is an indexing system. I don't know what it is, but I can see that some talk pages have them and a long list turns up. You can either do it yourself or tell a bot to do it. I could have done it myself, but I am a little scared to mess with my talk page since it is a really important thing. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:09, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
@Itcouldbepossible: I've setup your talk page to be archived by a bot. It will archive any conversation older than thirty days old (this can be changed). It is set to always leave a minimum of five threads open (this can changed as well). Each archive page will be a maximum of 125K in size, but if you'd rather the archives be shorter (which will cause more archive pages total) we can set this to a smaller size. ––FormalDude talk 06:45, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: Thanks but I hope it goes how I planned it to be. And how did you tell the bot? Did you email it? Does it understand English? Or are you friends with the owner? And also please tell me from which time to which time you edit here. I from India, and we follow IST time zone, which time zone do you follow?ItcouldbepossibleTalk 08:13, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
I archived some of my talk page contents on my own. I hope bot adds the archives after my archives. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 08:52, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
    See the code I interested on your talk page: {{User:MiszaBot/config | algo = old(30d) | archive = User talk:Itcouldbepossible/Archive %(counter)d | counter = 1 | maxarchivesize = 125K | archiveheader = {{Automatic archive navigator}} | minthreadstoarchive = 1 | minthreadsleft = 5 }}
Each parameter is divided between vertical bars (|). The parameter "algo" is set to "old(30d)" which tells the bot to archive any thread that has a timestamp older than 30 days from the date the bot it conducting the archiving. The parameter "maxarchivessize" is set to "125K" which tells the bot to stop archiving a page once it reaches 125K in size. See User:MiszaBot/config#Parameters_explained for what the rest of the parameters do. ––FormalDude talk 02:50, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude But I want all 6 months archive to stay on archive 1. Will that happen? And also I want the indexing system to appear. How will that happen?ItcouldbepossibleTalk 03:47, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Itcouldbepossible: Do you have time to chat on Discord for a moment? ––FormalDude talk 04:22, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
@Itcouldbepossible: Oh sure. Just wait a moment. I am loggin in. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 05:05, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

Feedback[edit]

  1. When indenting your comments here, please follow the same pattern of indents as the above comments. For example, if a comment starts with #, the next indented reply would be #:, followed by #::, and so on. If you need some explanation, my sandbox has some examples. ––FormalDude talk 20:17, 8 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: Thanks for your additional help. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 06:09, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  2. @Itcouldbepossible: Based on your recent CSD's of userpages, I recommend you start checking them with me before you tag anymore. Thank you. ––FormalDude talk 23:48, 9 February 2022 (UTC)
  3. Draftifys that should have been tagged for deletion instead:
Would you mind please allowing me to review articles that you want to draftify beforehand? ––FormalDude talk 00:00, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
Ok, I got your point, but there has to be some reason behind using PROD. What should I write in that reason?ItcouldbepossibleTalk 02:17, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
@Itcouldbepossible: For those articles you could have put "No verifiable references." But it depends, as there are any number of reasons for proposing deletion. See WP:DEL-REASON. ––FormalDude talk 02:39, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: Ok, but if they remove the tag, then what will I do? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 03:54, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
  4. @Itcouldbepossible: In response to your timezone question, on Wikipedia I follow UTC. My editing varies sporadically, but I normally edit every day. The only time I'm normally not editing is 13:00 to 17:00 UTC. ––FormalDude talk 02:58, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: Ok, so that means that you don't edit from 18:30 to 22:30 IST. Got it. Thanks. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 03:54, 10 February 2022 (UTC)

2. a) Why did not this numbering show no. 2? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 04:02, 10 February 2022 (UTC)
I honestly don't know, the number format is the most difficult. I've changed it to just be manual, sometimes that is the best option. ––FormalDude talk 00:16, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Ok, but sometimes this numbering goes haywire. So its best to add them manually.

Feedback[edit]

  1. @Itcouldbepossible: I highly recommend that you stop conversing with sockpuppets. Please read Wikipedia:Deny recognition. It is also probably not a good look to other Wikipedians that you're engaging sockpuppets. ––FormalDude talk 00:16, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
@FormalDude: 2402:3A80:198A:B57A:678:5634:1232:5476 is not my sockpuppet. Please request some checkuser to check me. Why will I be engaging sockpuppets? Please don't say so. That is not my IP. My IP is the above which I have told you already. Ok, and from today, no talking with sockpuppets. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 02:20, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
I did not say they're your sockpuppet, I said they are possibly a sockpuppet and you are conversing with them. ––FormalDude talk 02:52, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude But you said It is also probably not a good look to other Wikipedians that you're engaging sockpuppets. You said 'engaging sockpuppets', but I am not engaging sockpuppets. Please don't say it. There are many LTA users from Kolkata. You may see Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Pritam kumar roni das/Archive, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Rakhi Das/Archive, Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/DasSoumik/Archive, and many others. Most good Indian Wikipedians have created sockpuppets and have ended being caught. There are many that I can give you. But that IP even if it from Kolkata is not mine. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 03:12, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
By engaging I meant charming/humoring them, which is one of the definitions of engaging. I can see how that may have been confusing as it can also mean occupy, but I know you are not socking. ––FormalDude talk 03:52, 11 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Can we chat on discord for sometime?ItcouldbepossibleTalk 04:00, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

11 February 2022[edit]

Sorry for not asking you Dude, but without your permission, I have draftified some pages as they were not at all developed. The creator of the pages added tag under construction, and moved a huge number of undeveloped pages to mainspace. Not 1 but 10 undeveloped pages. You can see that from my contributions. Should I have CSDed them instead? Please share your opinion in this regard. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 10:40, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

In that case, CSD is probably preferable. ––FormalDude talk 23:25, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

Questions[edit]

FormalDude

Today I CSDed these userpages:

  1. User:Alzersumalinog/sandbox
  2. Draft:Tennessee Chamber of Commerce & Industry
  3. User:RobertP.Miles/sandbox

Just letting you know about the CSDes. Please provide your feedback if any.ItcouldbepossibleTalk 03:38, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

All good. ––FormalDude talk 23:51, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

FormalDude

Today I also draftified the following:

  1. Draft:The Wedding (2021 film)

I was sure about the draftification. Object if you don't agree.

This was a good draftify but they recreated the article in the exact same manner. Therefore, I have nominated it for AfD. ––FormalDude talk 23:51, 15 February 2022 (UTC)

I am unsure what to do with List of Tehsils of Anantnag. Should I draftify it, CSD it, or PROD it? I think PRODing will be better. What do you say?ItcouldbepossibleTalk 03:43, 12 February 2022 (UTC)

It was CSD G12. ––FormalDude talk 23:51, 15 February 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for all the replies. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 05:05, 19 February 2022 (UTC)

Ok, but I sent the page for AFD because it was toosoon. Why won't it be toosoon? The elections are notable, but the 2022 elections will be held on November, so it is clearly toosoon. ItcouldbepossibleTalk 05:05, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Your talk page is not being archived because you changed the age to 4320 hours (180 days) and the oldest comment on your talk page is only 124 days (14 October 2021). I have fixed it here. ––FormalDude talk 01:28, 16 February 2022 (UTC)
Ok, but it looks like there was some problem while archiving. Some earlier threads have been left behind. Please see if you can do something.
I'm not sure what's wrong with the archiving, but I'm working on it. ––FormalDude talk 22:56, 23 February 2022 (UTC)
FormalDude Ok, but why did you change the age of the archive? What will that do? How will my older messages come on archive 1? ItcouldbepossibleTalk 10:09, 25 February 2022 (UTC)
