Iskandar Puteri[edit]

Situated along the straits of Johor at the southern end of the Malay Peninsula, Iskandar Puteri (formally known as Nusajaya) is considered as one of the southernmost cities in Peninsula Malaysia. Known as Flagship B, Iskandar Puteri is strategically located in Iskandar Malaysia, which acts as the main southern development corridor in Johor, Malaysia. Iskandar Puteri also represents a seat of government for the state of Johor (Executive branch and Legislative branch).

Together with adjacent cities Johor Bahru (The official capital state of Johor) and Pasir Gudang, the three adjoining cities anchor Malaysia’s third largest urban agglomeration, Iskandar Malaysia, with a population of 2.2 million (as of August 2020). These cities are all located within the Johor Bahru District.

Demography[edit]

Iskandar Puteri is the second largest city in Johor. The following is based on the Department of Statistics Malaysia 2022 consensus[2].

History of Iskandar Puteri[edit]

Origin of Iskandar Puteri[edit]

Originally, Johor Bahru was known as Tanjung Puteri. When the de facto Maharaja of Johor, Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim came into power in 1855, he renamed it to Iskandar Puteri[3] (now known as Johor Bahru). He carried out his administrative duty from Telok Blangah, Singapore. After the passing of Temenggong Daeng Ibrahim, Sultan Abu Bakar came in and introduced a modern administrative pattern. Thus renaming it once again to Johor Bahru.

Launched in 2006, Nusajaya was one of the five flagship zones in Iskandar Malaysia. Later on, in 2016, with consent from Sultan Ibrahim, Nusajaya was renamed as Iskandar Puteri[4].  

Modern Iskandar Puteri[edit]

UEM Group, through its subsidiary UEM Land (now UEM Sunrise)[5], continued to develop Nusajaya (now known as Iskandar Puteri) as a new city center for Johor. As a catalyst to Nusajaya’s development, the Federal Government Administrative in Putrajaya developed a new administrative center within Nusajaya, Kota Iskandar.  

This was followed by the introduction of Iskandar Malaysia, the economic development corridor in Malaysia. Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA)[6] was brought in to promote, facilitate and regulate the development of Iskandar Malaysia, and Iskandar Investment Berhad (IIB)[7] was brought in as a catalytic developer for Iskandar Malaysia.

Iskandar Puteri today[edit]

The Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP), developed under the provision of Act 664[8], has divided Iskandar Malaysia into five flagship zones:

  • Johor Bahru City Centre (Zone A)
  • Iskandar Puteri (Zone B)
  • Western Gate Development (Zone C)
  • Eastern Gate Development (Zone D)
  • Senai-Skudai (Zone E)

Each zone stands as an indicator for different economic clusters that aim to shift Johor from its main industries to a service-based industry.

Iskandar Investment Berhad[edit]

IIB, an investment holding company, is responsible for the development of Flagship Zone B, Iskandar Puteri, and has been the driving force behind a bulk of the development in Iskandar Puteri. They spearheaded the launch of key projects, such as the development of Medini Iskandar Malaysia, EduCity Iskandar[9], Iskandar Malaysia Studios (previously Pinewood Malaysia Studio) and Legoland Malaysia Resort, which ultimately became the key factors in Iskandar Puteri’s catalyst into development.

The four key sectors promoted by Iskandar Investment Berhad are Education, Tourism & Leisure, Healthcare & Wellness and Creative.

Local Government[edit]

Iskandar Puteri is Johor’s second city, and Malaysia’s 14th. It is administered by the Iskandar Puteri City Council (MBIP). It houses Kota Iskandar, which acts as the administrative center for the State of Johor’s government. The Johor State Legislative Assembly and Johor Chief Minister’s Office, Bangunan Sultan Ismail and Bangunan Dato Jaafar Muhammad, are separated by Dataran Mahkota, a public square in the heart of Kota Iskandar.

Iskandar Puteri is a Federal Constituency located within the Johor Bahru district. The Parliamentary Constituency is (19)(P162) Iskandar Puteri. It is divided into two state constituencies (DUN), which are (N.48) Skudai and (N.49) Kota Iskandar.[10]

EduCity is a 600-acre (2.4 km2) educational hub developed by Iskandar Investment Berhad. It houses not only an array of international schools and universities, but also houses shared facilities such as EduCity Sports Complex, Educity Village[12] & EduCity Hub[13].

    • PTP is a premium transshipment port in Malaysia. It is ranked 15th in the top 100 ports in the world.[58] Strategically located at the convergence of the world’s largest shipping lanes[59], PTP serves as a port terminal to local and international shippers in Gelang Patah, Iskandar Puteri. In 2022, PTP handled over 1 million TEUs[60], which is a record breaking milestone.
