Project goals

Wikipedia is the 5th most visited website worldwide. Many ETH professors already have Wikipedia articles, but not all of them have a portrait picture. These are always very welcome when it comes to biographical information, as is the case on Wikipedia. You can improve Wikipedia with your portrait photo and support freely accessible knowledge. Every comma and every picture counts!

Workflow

To image Wikipedia articles, you must upload images to Wikimedia Commons. This job is done by the ETH Library Image Archive.

Workflow

Just send an e-mail to mailto:bildarchiv@library.ethz.ch! We also offer personal consultations.

1. Write us that you expressly agree to the publication of your official portrait from the Image database of Corporate Communications under a free licence on Wikimedia Commons (Personality rights).
2. If no or an outdated image is available, please contact the Corporate Communications mailto:fotoarchiv@hk.ethz.ch. There are regular photo shoots for professors.
3. If you would like another picture, please send us the picture including the clarified Image use policy.

ETH Library Image Archive

We need your permission to publish your portrait. In the case of Corporate Communication images, the Image use policy have already been clarified with the photographers.

1. Publication of the desired image in E-Pics Image Archive Online under the free Creative Commons licence CC BY-SA 4.0 wit a persistent DOI. Because of the DOI, the images must remain online even if a new image is uploaded. The images can be freely downloaded in various resolutions and used for all purposes.
2. Upload the image to Wikimedia Commons in the category ETH-BIB Portraits for free use by Wikipedians. The images are provided with Personality rights and Consent of the person depicted.
3. Communication with the Wikipedians
4. Co-organisation of Wikipedia writing workshops/Edit-a-thons

The ETH Library Image Archive has been the largest provider of images for Swiss memory institutions on the Commons since 2016, with over 54,000 images. For many years, the ETH Library has pursued a digital strategy of going where the users are. Our latest Wikipedia project was the illustration of all Swiss community articles with a historical aerial photograph (final report in German).

FAQs on Wikimedia Commons, image rights and personal rights

What is the Wikimedia Commons?

• Wikimedia Commons has been the central collection for image, audio and video files of Wikimedia since September 2004. Commons can be accessed directly from all language versions of Wikipedia and other sister projects (for example Wikidata or Wikisource).
• Only free content under free licences is allowed on Wikimedia Commons, i.e. images and other media files that are not subject to copyright restrictions (Image use policy). The use of the images should be possible for anyone, at any time and for any purpose (including commercial use).
• The use may, however, be restricted by non-copyright (Personality rights) and the licence may require special measures.

Why a free image licence?

This comic explains why Commons does not accept "non-commercial" licences. Click the image to view it in full size.

• On Wikimedia Commons, the free licence Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike) (CC BY-SA 4.0) is preferred.
• BY means: appropriate copyright and rights notices must be provided, a link to the licence must be included, and it must be stated whether changes have been made.
• SA means: if the material is remixed, modified or otherwise directly based on it, the contribution may only be distributed under the same licence as the original.
• Stricter CC licenses such as ND (non derivative/no editing) or NC (non commercial/non commercial) are not permitted on the Commons.
• A (free) image licence only covers the rights of the photographer (Image use policy) and does not indicate the consent of the person depicted (Personality rights).

Which image rights do I have to clarify?

• In the case of images for university communication Image use policy Image rights/rights of use have usually already been clarified with the photographers.
• You give us the consent that you, as the person depicted, expressly agree to the publication of this photograph under a free licence on Wikimedia Commons (Personality rights).

Are my personal rights sufficiently protected?

• Yes. Your image can be used for all Wikimedia projects, for which you have given your consent as the person depicted. Commons respects the rights of those depicted and has a moral obligation to handle images of people ethically.
• We mark each image with the Personality rights. It is intended to warn recyclers, especially those outside of the Wikimedia projects, that the consent of the person depicted is required for any use, especially in the case of non or low-profile persons. Users* of this illustration ensure that the intended use complies with applicable law. Users are themselves responsible for not infringing the personal rights of third parties.
• Each image is provided with the consent of the person depicted. It indicates that the guidelines for photographs of recognisable persons have been observed. It should be used in photographs and videos showing identifiable persons.

What happens to my portrait on Wikimedia Commons?

• Users can use the image for all Wikimedia projects, download it and use it freely for other purposes.
• For all images on Commons, free commercial re-use from a copyright standpoint must be permitted. However, the person depicted in a photograph may refuse to re-use it or demand payment for it.
• Once uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, the images cannot be deleted!

Can an old picture in the Wikipedia article be replaced?

• Yes, the image in the Wikipedia article can be changed at any time. For a new image, the upload procedure then starts all over again.
• But, once uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, the images can no longer be deleted! The old image remains on Wikimedia Commons.

Why is the picture put online on E-Pics Image Archive Online?

• E-Pics Image Archive Online is the E-Pics catalogue of the ETH Library Image Archive .
• The images on E-Pics Image Archive Onnline are available under a free licence and thus meet the requirements of Wikimedia Commons.
• The images are uploaded from E-Pics Image Archive Online to Wikimedia Commons and also linked back.
• The images on E-Pics Image Archive Online are given a DOI and are therefore citable. DOI stands for Digital Object Identifier. DOI is a persistent URL.
• Because of the DOI, the images must remain online even if a new image should be uploaded.
• The ETH Library is a recognised partner of Wikimedia Commons.
• The images are stored on Commons at ETH Library.

What is Wikidata?

• Wikidata is the knowledge database for all Wikimedia projects, e. g. for linking the language versions of Wikipedia articles. It is a authority control and platform for Linked Open Data.
• Wikidata provides generally valid data such as dates of birth, profession or employer. The ORCID or Twitter account can also be entered.
• The portrait can be integrated into Wikidata.
• The data in Wikidata is available under the Creative Commons licence CC0 1.0 Universal (CC0 1.0) Public Domain Dedication. This means that the data can be used freely without specifying an author.
• Wikidata is developing rapidly and with 90 million data objects (as of September 2020) is already one of the most important knowledge databases with Linked Open Data. In contrast, the Integrated Authority File of the German National Library contains around 8.6 million data sets.
• Search engines and language assistance programmes such as Siri or Google use the Wikidata database.

What I should know about Wikipedia articles

It is important for the history of higher education to document as many ETH professors and their work as possible in Wikipedia articles (missing articles see Fehlende Artikel WikiProjektseite in German.

• It is not appreciated in Wikipedia if you write about yourself!
• It is not intended to publish complete bibliographies, these should be listed on your website or in the ETH Research Collection.
• The Image Archive does not write articles.
• The Image Archive does not accept any correction requests for existing articles. These can be deposited on the discussion page of the Wikipedia article together with a proof.
• We clarify the relevance criteria for missing articles with Wikipedia (Wikipedia German und Wikipedia English).
• We are planning regular Writing workshops/Edit-a-thons with Hadi from spring 2021. Wikipedians and those who want to become Wikipedians write and translate articles within the scope of their possibilities.
• If you would like to hold a writing workshop as part of a course, we would be happy to support you!
