Happy New Year Dr. Blofeld![edit]

Thankyou Ssven2 and Hafspajen!! You too!! I was looking for Jimbo in that right picture Hafs but couldn't find him LOL.♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:02, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

And to you as well! We haven't worked together nearly as often as I'd like, you truly shame me in your global productivity. While I'm often pinnicking over some pointless floofery, you march on de-redlinking the world ! Gareth E Kegg (talk) 14:01, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Not so productive "globally" these days but I do what I can!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:22, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

New Year[edit]

Thanks - same to you. I'm about ready for this one to be over and done with, frankly.

I hope so, but I'm not holding my breath. It's going to take longer than I hope to reach the 5 million mark. I want to get back to article creating myself at some point...perhaps once I've passed the million-edit mark. :-) So I'll throw a few in now and again to help reach the goal. But...we'll see. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:27, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Don't forget India - I suspect we'll be hearing a lot from there. And Pakistan, if some recent article creation I've seen is any indication.
I've also discovered, through poking around for WikiProject Women Writers, that there are a lot of dark corners that need illuminating and filling. Have a look at some of the South Pacific writer categories - Category:Solomon Islands writers, Category:Marshallese writers, Category:Vanuatuan writers...to say nothing of African categories. There has to be more than we've seen thus far. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:46, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
Perhaps. But I still suspect there's a lot of things left uncovered. I mean, judging by some of the missing articles I've noticed for places like Italy...hell, even the US isn't covered nearly as well as it could be.--Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:51, 31 December 2014 (UTC)
True. And I see some good work being done on Italy and Mexico, off the top of my head. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 22:36, 31 December 2014 (UTC)

Dr. B and @Ser Amantio di Nicolao: Speaking of the US... Can't believe all the missing building articles which belong in Category:Broadway (Manhattan)‎. Inspiration at Commons. I'll work on them over the weekend. Jump in if you're in the mood. --Rosiestep (talk) 18:15, 1 January 2015 (UTC) Rosiestep Just goes to show that even in the heart of America there's still lots missing!! I'm going to begin on Waldorf Astoria tomorrow I think.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:17, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Templates would be really helpful... maybe one for Broadway in Manhattan and another for Broadway in the Bronx? Sectioned out by neighborhood. It would be handy for readers, of course, but I'd really like the redlinks laid out. --Rosiestep (talk) 23:50, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Good job on the template. I think Museum of African Art and Bayard–Condict Building] should be removed as they're not directly on Broadway in Manhattan, ok? I've added others... there are a jillion still missing. This could take a long time. I've put the building name in parens as a place holder; obviously the article name should be either the street number or the name (not both). This template would really benefit from imbedded coords. I think I remember seeing that done on some Nunavut articles I worked on with CambridgeBayWeather a few years ago. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:41, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

I'm unhappy with my lumpy additions. I think we need a redlist which pairs street number with building name, if ones exists, but not the way I've done it within the template. Maybe on the template's talkpage? And there should be links to the commons cat if one exists. So much work. Lol! --Rosiestep (talk) 15:21, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

DYK for Hadatha[edit]

Harrias talk 12:02, 3 January 2015 (UTC)

Another good one. I fondly remember that a year ago you helped me over depression by a fast GA review, - this year begins in better mood, but with a FAC under time pressure, - would like to see it 7 February which is soon. In case of interest: BWV 22, part of the project to reflect stages in Bach's career, here the audition for Leipzig, with a council preferring other candidates. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:44, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

Not many these days, one DYK in exactly a month! Sorry to hear that you were feeling depressed, given that way some people are on here at times though it doesn't surprise me! I'd like to see Philip Seymour Hoffman at TFA for 2 February on 1st anniversary but am not sure if it will pass in time to nom and be approved..♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:52, 4 January 2015 (UTC)

I thought everybody remembered as well as I do how down I was when 28bytes left a year ago. It was over when he returned. - If you nom your FAC I would look, but there are people who think we should not "celebrate" anniversaries of death, which would give you more time, to birthday in July ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:40, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Gary Cooper peer review[edit]

Hello, Doctor. I hope your holidays were pleasant. Today I created a peer review request for the Gary Cooper article you promoted to GA last month. I spent the past two weeks making additional edits related to GA comments and suggestions. If you have the time, please review the article and leave any feedback at the peer review page in preparation for FAC nomination. For other reviewers, do you recommend that I reach out to the editors who contributed to the John Barrymore peer review? Regards, Bede735 (talk) 01:54, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Can you find a useable photo of the Waldorf Hotel (Fargo, North Dakota)? --Rosiestep (talk) 01:58, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Great job on Waldorf Astoria New York. I'm thinking about carving out Waldorf Astoria New York#Original buildings and starting something like Waldorf Astoria (New York, 1893)? There's plenty of additional info to add to the 1893 hotel article thereafter. The 1893 hotel could be summarized in a paragraph in the history and/or lede section of the Waldorf Astoria New York article. Your thoughts? --Rosiestep (talk) 02:26, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for separating it out and adding headers. I saw you working on parts of it so I tried to keep my additions in the lede, figuring I could move them down later. Turning out pretty nice! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:56, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Namaste! --Rosiestep (talk) 20:51, 11 January 2015 (UTC) I know you're a sleuth at things like this, so if you stumble across an acceptable image of Bangalore Nagarathnamma‎, can you add it? --Rosiestep (talk) 20:38, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

The 1893, good job. Specific sources: done. Empire Room: I see the source that says the Waldorf's restaurant was Empire in style, so I'd stick with that. Overlap: Paragraphs 3 and 4 of the joined hotel section aren't specific to exactly where the mentioned spaces were located, Waldorf vs. Astoria so we can keep them as is, or remove them; I'm fine either way. Bios: I'll work on them in the next day or two; tuckered out now. Names: We have to square up the names: Hotel Waldorf vs. Waldorf Hotel; Hotel Astoria vs. Astoria Hotel. As for ghits, it's pretty much a coin toss but appears the former outnumbers the latter.--Rosiestep (talk) 03:55, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Althorp[edit]

I made a start and left you many hidden comments/questions in the early sections. In general, given that this is an article about the property, I think you need more detail and clarity about the building of the house and any demolishment(s) and rebuilding. -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:10, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

I finished the history section and left you some more hidden comments. One confusing item is the why the Duke of Marlborough gave the estate away. Did he retain the other Spencer estates, and if so, how can Althorpe, alone, have been considered "the greatest inheritance in the kingdom", when in previous generations, the numerous Spencer estates had all been inherited together. I am very sorry, but this is all the time I can spare on Althorp. I hope these edits and questions were helpful. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:15, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
There must be architectural records. Perhaps info is available at the county or town historical society, or the local librarian will be able to point you to the records. It seems obvious to me that, for a GA or FA article about a house, you need to find the records concerning the early buildings. You just wrote that "presumably" the older building was replaced by the 1688 building (rather than incorporating it), but that is, of course, not adequate. Good luck with the article! -- Ssilvers (talk) 22:35, 6 January 2015 (UTC)
I replied to you on my Talk page. -- Ssilvers (talk) 23:34, 6 January 2015 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Christiaan Barnard.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Christiaan Barnard.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the file description page and add the text {{di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}} below the original replaceable fair use template, replacing <your reason> with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
  2. On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per the non-free content policy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Discasto (talk) 12:21, 6 January 2015 (UTC) PS: see commons:Category:Christiaan Barnard

Dr. Blofeld, Happy New Year sir! I've returned to Wikipedia on a more regular basis now, and I've been attempting to expand some of my previous articles to FL and GA status. As part of this initiative, I've placed List of colleges and universities in Delaware on the FL nomination list for the third time in hopes that I can finally get it passed. Would you like to conduct a GA review on the film, doc? I did not want to ask you earlier as you were busy with 2 GA reviews. Ssven2 speak 2 me 04:13, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

I happened to notice your sandbox on great films made. You might want to include this film which you have opted to review to that list. The links on YouTube are as below. It has English subtitles BTW.

Moondram Pirai - Part 1

Moondram Pirai - Part 2

Hope you enjoy watching it. — Ssven2 speak 2 me 08:12, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks. I haven't forgotten the review don't worry. Will do it later.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:47, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

I've seen the film now. It began very well, the first 40 minutes especially were excellent but I felt it dragged too much second half with a lack of pace, although some nice scenery. I found the lead actress's voice grating on me a lot, like a demented chicken at times, especially during the scene where the woodcutter tries to rape her but I most enjoyed all of the shots of Silk Smitha! Quite sexy until she opens her mouth :-) Overall an enjoyable film!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:44, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for watching. The climax scene was the film's highlight. What was your opinion of it, doc? Ssven2 speak 2 me 02:54, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

The best part for me was Silk lying on the bed looking at the old fat guy :-) Yeah the end was good, and fairly unusual it seems for an Indian film as a negative one. I liked the location of it, really felt like a retreat in rural India! Any idea what film this is from with Silk? That might be worth watching too :-) ♦ Dr. Blofeld 08:06, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I have written that point in the plot as "Cheenu acts like a dancing monkey that Viji developed a liking for"; that good? Kailash29792 (talk) 05:34, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

No idea about the name of the film the pic is related to. Haven't seen any other film with Silk other than Moondram Pirai. — Ssven2 speak 2 me 15:18, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Request your possible involvement[edit]

This probably takes some explaining. At the recent ArbCom case regarding Landmark Worldwide I suggested that maybe it might be possible to get together a group of editors with some broad experience of wikipedia and knowledge of the general topic area to get together and review the sources available on the topic with the intention of ultimately starting a broader discussion, probably through RfC, about the issues involved. It is more or less in line with a proposal I made for something like a "content" committee, which would probably be more reasonably called a "comment" committee, given the role I think RfC and the hopefully wide variety and number of editors might play in the real outcome of the RfC at Wikipedia:Village pump (idea lab)/Archive 16#Rehashing an old idea - Maybe a "Comment committee" to deal with content?. ArbCom itself requested some broader input in the topic area in its decision.

I was thinking of editors around here who might have some sort of broad experience in the social/religious issues involved and you were one of the first names that came to mind for maybe taking part in reviewing information presented and evaluating sources and the like. If you would have any interest in maybe taking part in this sort of test run for such a committee, I would obviously welcome it. I haven't actually started a separate section on the article talk page yet, because I wanted to see if there were any responses from the individuals I was considering, or, potentially, anyone else who might be interested. John Carter (talk) 16:54, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

I did look at it and had no idea what it was you really wanted. I know little about social and religious issues. Film, maybe!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:03, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Basically, in your particular case, a good article reviewer. Part of the hope is to get the resulting articles up to GA and FA, like with everywhere else, and having a reviewer on hand to help ensure that the resulting articles are good ones would obviously be really useful. John Carter (talk) 22:21, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

This year seems to be picking up where last year left off[edit]

Hello DB. I just read of the passing of Rod Taylor. Maybe not in the top tier of actors be was certainly a presence in films of the 50s and 60s. The TMC cable station is replaying an interview with Luise Rainer tomorrow and I have my DVR set to record it. Have a fun weekend. MarnetteD|Talk 16:14, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Glad that you've seen Dersu Uzala. The scene where they race against the snow storm to build a shelter grips me every time I see it. MarnetteD|Talk 16:17, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

MarnetteD That's a pity! He was top tier for a brief period in the early to mid 60s I thought with The Birds and The VIPs etc but it was relatively brief, but not exactly Burt Lancaster level and endurance! Yes, I'm having a Kurosawa fest at the moment, I've got two more later ones of his on DVD to see too! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:20, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

I look forward to knowing which ones are on the schedule and your reaction to them :-) MarnetteD|Talk 16:23, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Kagemusha and Ran. If they turn out to be as good as expected I'll get another lot! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:25, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Well not to give away any plot points it is worth noting that they are part of his later career where he was more reflective and lyrical in his filming and storytelling. The fact that his eyesight was failing makes what he put onscreen even more remarkable. In lieu of storyboards he created numerous paintings to illustrate what he wanted to put on film. They are part of the Criterion Collection sets for both films but they might be available online if you are interested. Enjoy your viewing!! MarnetteD|Talk 16:33, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
What always amazes me about Kurosawa's films is how he delivers a message at times with pictures and makes use of natural landscapes and elements and contrasts in silence and noise. Particularly woodland in films like Rashomon and Derzu which gives it that haunting sort of atmosphere and supernatural presence at times. While he might not be quite as affecting emotionally as some of the other Japanese masters such as Ozu and Mizoguchi his films are a joy to watch. Ebert says something about Kurosawa's landscapes in a review: "Besides his exemplary cast, Kurosawa makes evocative use of landscape to realize his vision. The mountains and plains of Hidetora's domain were shot at Mount Aso, an active volcano in the broad central plains of Kyushu, Japan's still largely wild southern island. "♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:40, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
You have that %100 correct. For me the one director that comes close to AK's use of the natural world is Herzog. Michael Coulter is not a director but his camerawork captures the outdoors magnificently. Local Hero is a masterpiece. The final sequence of The Dead is full of snowy landscapes all over Ireland. I can still remember the first time I saw the film saying (in my head as I abhor talking in movie theaters) that looks like it was filmed by Coulter and, lo and behold, there was his name in the credits. MarnetteD|Talk 16:52, 9 January 2015 (UTC)
Sometimes even just the trickling of a stream or something or the hooting of an owl can have a moving impact on the viewer! Many average filmmakers could do it but not create the same effect, it's the timing/contrast and overall vision which is special I think. Local Hero is on my list to watch, and of course sometime I'll try to complete both Kurosawa's and Herzog's filmographies!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:59, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

MarnetteD Seen Kagemusha now. Great film. Really stunning at times, is it me or did it feel like a David Lean picture at times? Some of the landscapes and devices involving the horse scenes etc. Lawrence of Arabia and El Cid in particular I'm sure had to have been an influence on him in some of the outdoor battle scenes. I wonder if Kurosawa was influenced by films like Lawrence of Arabia? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:08, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Sorry I missed this DB. Your notice got buried under another editor undoing about 14 of my edits. As you may know AK was influenced by numerous western directors - particularly John Ford - so a DL influence is quite likely. In turn there are scenes in all three of the Lord of the Rings films that Jackson seems to have lifted from Kagemusha (and other Kurosawa films for that matter.) The fake Shingen's gallop in front of the soldiers is echoed by Theoden's ride in front of the Rohirrim before their charge in the battle at Minas Tirith. I hope you noticed the final performances in a Kurosawa film by long time members of his acting troupe - Kamatari Fujiwara has a brief scene that is in long shot so it is easy to miss - and Takashi Shimura (who had been in AK's very first film and had actually been in more of his films than Mifune had) - Shimura's scene had been cut from the US release of the film (which I saw on Christmas night 1980) and was not in the VHS release of the film either. It wasn't until the Criterion DVD release somewhere around the turn of the century that I finally got to see it! MarnetteD|Talk 04:25, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Re; Dunces and Dangers[edit]

Have checked and so far, no posters or lobby cards have come up. What can be done, though, is to do screencaps from the film itself. A copy is at Internet Archive. No worries re: license as it would be PD-US. We hope (talk) 14:04, 10 January 2015 (UTC)

All of the copies seem to jiggle a lot :) but here's another link to a copy of the film. I saw only about 3 mentions of it in the old film trade papers; none had any photos. It's possible they didn't produce any posters or cards due to a limited budget. This is something I think you'll like--all B & W and all said to be in the public domain, though I would run a check on those from 1923-on before using any screenshots. Speedy deletion nomination of International Federation of Karnataka Christian Associations[edit]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Teamwork Barnstar
For our combined efforts in getting Philip Seymour Hoffman to FA - and in time for that special date too! We did good. Thanks for all the hard work. Loeba (talk) 10:48, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

You never replied to me about changing the lead, so I don't know if you're unhappy with it or anything, but hey ho. Article promoted, woop! So glad it was in time too, heh - I know I initially said "if it doesn't pass in time, nevermind", but once I'd put the effort in I realised it'd be really annoying for it not too! I've already put in the TFA request (putting the blurb together was easy, for once). --Loeba (talk) 10:51, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Yeye! Thanks Loeba! What was it about the lead you wanted to change? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:13, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Anita Ekberg & Taylor Negron[edit]

Anita Ekberg has died. RIP. --Rosiestep (talk) 16:23, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Yup, I was just saying to Marnette! 2015 I suspect is going to be another year of big losses. There's a LOT of actors born around that 1930 mark who are going to go in the next few years! I keep expecting news of Christopher Lee and Sean Connery!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:33, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for making me aware of this sad news DB. I fear that you are right about more of those that we admire leaving us. I noticed your addition of the Fonda, Ferrer, Hepburn War and Peace to the list. When you have the time (7 or 8 years from now I would guess) you should see Bondarchuk's War and Peace (film series). I saw it as a teen and found it remarkable but when it finally came out on DVD (beware of shortened versions this is the one to look for) I was amazed at the variety of film techniques SB used at various points in the film. His Waterloo (1970 film) is also worth your time. In this day and age of huge CGI armies popping up in all manner of films his use of real human hordes is quite stunning. MarnetteD|Talk 17:09, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

MarnetteD Yes, I saw it perhaps a year back, I'd forgotten it though, there's still a number of films missing! Perhaps a tad long though. War and Peace (film series) looks a much better way to cover it in installments and look forward to watching that sometime!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:18, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

... And the much younger Taylor Negron. RIP. --Rosiestep (talk) 20:08, 11 January 2015 (UTC)

complet the translation from french to english[edit]

Good morning, Can you complet the translation and correct my mistakes of this page Rachid Mouffouk from french to english like you do with Omar Derdour ?. Thank you in advance. Vikoula5 (talk) 10:19, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Done, thanks Vikoula5, keep up the good work! Ipigott and Rosiestep speak French very well I believe, that right Rosie? My command of the knowledge is very basic but fortunately it translates reasonably well and you can work it out. It's one of the languages, along with Spanish and Italian I'd love to be fluent in largely because it would allow me to watch more films hehe, but I always get discouraged hearing native speakers speak and puts me off because it's a huge task to learn. I have the greatest admiration for people like Ipigott who can speak at least half a dozen languages!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:37, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Oui, I speak French, though my understanding of it is better than my speaking... same for Spanish and Serbian. The last few years, I've been working with Asturian and Catalan, and making some progress with them. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:04, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you anyway. i will conatct the users you mentioned me. If you need basic translation from french, arabic or russian you can ask me. --Vikoula5 (talk) 18:07, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, you correct my mistakes thank you , but in french version there are other section that i can't translate in english. cause it's not my level of language.--Vikoula5 (talk) 19:34, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Roskilde[edit]

Hi there, I'm pleased to inform you that I've begun reviewing the article Roskilde you nominated for GA-status according to the criteria. This process may take up to 7 days. Re:Waldorf[edit]

Let me go through the 3-4 old books at Internet Archive where all of the old photos came from. There are some plans in them, but offhand I'm not sure if they're originals or not. These books have a lot of written history also. Let me see what's there and also leave the links to the books the IA has for you as they probably will be good for information & citations. Will start be re-naming or moving the category. :) We hope (talk) 19:56, 12 January 2015 (UTC)

What I have so far: We hope (talk) 20:58, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
I should have a more recent photo of a well-known "biggie" who stayed there in the 1950s shortly, along with a free-use photo of Lucius Beebe. Just ran across some very interesting newspaper articles at Newspapers.com which I think you could use. I'll clip them and post the open links for them here. We hope (talk) 00:12, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
I thought I was seeing things, but.... talk about fate :) We hope (talk) 22:38, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
oh yeah LOL I know!! I used to have a picture of one on my user page!! Thankyou so much for the recent pics and links, I'll take a full look at the time tomorrow! Byeee!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:40, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
  • The Voice of Broadway part 1-page 6 The Bee October 5, 1937 via Newspapers.com When Dorothy Kilgallen vacationed, her daily column was guest-written by other notables of her choice. This one was written by Oscar of the Waldorf and he wrote about the Waldorf's history, noting that Buffalo Bill was once a guest at the Waldorf, among other things.
  • OK, if you made it this far, you deserve a break-take a look at this. :) We hope (talk) 04:17, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
Nice, added the film to my list :-) Some really great finds there WH! The Sherry one especially!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:14, 13 January 2015 (UTC)
The closest I've come to old floor plans for the Waldorf are from 1910-1911, after the two hotels had been joined. It looks like NYPL has a copy, but the documents aren't online. No one has had anything earlier online that I've been able to find. We hope (talk) 14:04, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Yes, there is an article on the Martinique Hotel: Radisson Hotel Martinique! As for Hardenbergh's Manhattan Hotel, it seems to still be a redlink. --Rosiestep (talk) 03:23, 14 January 2015 (UTC)

Would you be interested in this for the article? It's before 1923 but NYPL has been tricky--they label everything with a copyright mark. There's no way they could possible own the copyright on the menu; it was printed for the W-A by Tiffany (see bottom). ;) We hope (talk) 16:39, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Sure, everything helps!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:53, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

While I'm there, Ill get an old Louis Sherry menu too. Not as colorful but plenty of menu items. ;) We hope (talk) 17:04, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
We hope great! Can you find any of Paris Ball, I think I have enough material to start a separate article, I wonder if any of those old magazines mention it?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:41, 16 January 2015 (UTC)
No menus for it-just looked. The Lantern magazines have nothing either as they're geared toward people in the performing arts. My thought would be to look at old newspapers because this should have been mentioned in some society columns. If you want me to look, first I need to take care of some photos that I'm in the middle of uploading. They're ones from Otto Perry and you want to make it absolutely clear that the postcard photos did NOT come from the DPL. Perry, as a railfan, took many photos which he shared with his fellow railfans. These cards were circulated by Perry himself before his death in 1970. DPL did not have access to any of his material until that point. We hope (talk) 19:11, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

I merged The Waldorf–Astoria Orchestra into the 1893's Society section early this morning. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:02, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Haha! I'm on it! --Rosiestep (talk) 17:11, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Started having a look at newspapers last night re: April in Paris. I can get at least 1 Marilyn Mornoe photo of her at the Ball and one of Marlene Dietrich there also. This is what I saw while reading last night--the papers are before 1963, so a check for renewals and finding none would "free" them for us. :) We hope (talk) 13:42, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
That would be cool!! Funny but the Ann Vaccone quote in my book about it being for the very very upper class she added a rather snobby comment about "of course there's no way to exclude the riff raff though" and Marilyn was the first one I thought of which she'd probably have turned her nose up at at hehe!! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:59, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Marilyn was a "key player" in a red-hot feud between Elsa Maxwell and the Duchess of Windsor. Both were on the Ball Committee. The feud was so intense, both women were in an elevator and ignored each other--neither wanted to be the one to break the silence. As part of the way she "got even", Maxwell invited MM to the Ball. She and Arthur Miller were late (as always) and when the couple took seats at Elsa Maxwell's table, all the attention was drawn to Maxwell and her party. She delivered a knockout punch to the D of W which worse than if she had physically slapped her. I'll leave you the ref links for this juicy bit. Basically, if you got an invitation and were willing to pay the price per seat or table, anyone could be a guest at the Ball. (Have links for this too.) :) We hope (talk) 14:13, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
How do you know all this! links please!! Yeah just by the way it was worded I got a strong feeling she was primarily talking about Marilyn! Will go through some of the above sources later, I've finished going through the book I have now, although there's still one chap from the old days I need to go back and dig up something for.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:21, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

I got the "dirt" by starting to read newspapers last night! :) We hope (talk) 14:25, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

A down payment. :) We hope (talk) 15:02, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

You've excelled yourself WH!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:29, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Let me see what I have that you don't already! :) I agree with you re: the search engine, but it's better than the frustration I have with Google News Archive since they decided to stop adding to it. Many of the news clippings on the Red Skelton and Perry Como articles came out of there when it was working properly. Back then, you could search until you either found what you wanted or got tired of looking. I now feel I have to "beat" everything out of it by trying to determine the "magic words" to find what I'm looking for, as well as there being limits to the number of hits. The same is true for the Google Books search in magazines. With the musicians, I'd used Billboard a lot because the record companies published many trade ads in it. Now when I want to search, I'm not getting access to the right links or am cut off before I find what I want. :/ We hope (talk) 22:51, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
Found more to add but it will need to wait until morning. Located the series of articles Jim Bishop wrote that was published in the Salt Lake Tribune. It details how George Boldt was able to keep peace between the two cousins. We hope (talk) 06:07, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Newbie[edit]

Hello Blofeld old bean, and happy new year to you. I didn't really want to stick my oar in, and don't intend to, but have done so accidentally. A newbie, User:Erica Blatt Harkins, has tried to make comments on my user talk page and Ygangdottir's, with little success (using the {{tb}} template wrongly some how). I have, I hope, welcomed her to Wikipedia. I have been technically naughty by editing her user page, but she said it was a mess, her first contribution should never have been on her user page and she didn't know how it got there out of the sandboy – that's fine, so I just kinda removed that from her user page (on the Queen of Aquitaine) and put some links and starts in, in the hope that it will get her started. I hope that is not too bad. Technically I shouldn't edit her user page but she needs a bit of help to get started so I hope overall I did the right thing.

So I noticed you also have [[http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=642153678&oldid=642122346 also contributed at Y's talk page. I am sorry if I am sticking my oar in but I am sure that both Y, you and I are trying to encourage this user. I probably seem a bit harsh to the newbie but do not wish to, quite the opposite, want to encourage her to contribute.

So if I have kinda sounded harsh to her, I don't think so, but maybe better than I you can encourage and WP:Don't scare the newbies. You certainly haven't but I may have done.

Si Trew (talk) 04:20, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Yes, happy new year to you and Monk! Don't want to stick my nose in on this, sorry!♦ Dr. Blofeld 07:27, 13 January 2015 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Hotel Kandahar[edit]

The article Hotel Kandahar has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Article without reliable sources does not meet Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) or WP:GNG. Aditional sources found are only passing mentions and do provide significant coverage of the subject.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Re:Al Smith, et. al.[edit]

Al Smith was at one time the Governor of New York State. He made an unsuccessful run for president against Herbert Hoover in 1928. One of the reasons for his defeat was that Smith was a Roman Catholic. While there is/was no law prohibiting Cathoics from the presidency, some factions of the population wrongly believed that if a Catholic was elected, the Pope would be running the US. The dinner has been a long-standing event in New York and is a "must attend" for any Democrat who hopes to run for president.

So far, I found this NYT article with some further background on Hardenbergh. BTW--I think April in Paris Ball would make a fun DYK, as the bit about Elsa Maxwell and MM vs the D of W would be a great hook! :) We hope (talk) 14:56, 18 January 2015 (UTC)

Waldorf-Astoria[edit]

As part of a general clean-up exercise, I (unusually) found I had to replace a dead link for the Vanity Fair article. I did notice, while skimming through the latter article, that while it mostly supports the article text, it doesn't fully do so. As I see the article is up for GA, you might want to take a look at this little aspect. Regards, NSH002 (talk) 11:37, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

@NSH002: not sure what you're referring to and what the problem is?♦ Dr. Blofeld 11:40, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

I don't have much time now, but would if necessary be happy to explain later. In the meantime, the relevant part of the (very long) VF article is on the fourth page, just compare it with the article text. I'm sure any decent GA reviwer would do the same. Regards, NSH002 (talk) 11:47, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Compare what?? What fourth page?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:04, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
I see someone else has already responded to this, but the point should be obvious. You are involved in developing an article to GA status, editing it heavily shortly before I posted the message above; it therefore strains credulity that you aren't (weren't) aware of my edit to the article, right at the top of the history at the time I posted on this page. In that edit – as part of a technical clean-up exercise – I replaced a dead link by a link to the (originally intended) Vanity Fair article, and corrected a technical error in the ref. I also took the trouble to check the source, firstly in order to check the ref, but also out of curiosity. The Vanity Fair article is very long, which is why it is split into 4 pages, with links at the bottom of each page to the other pages. Regards, NSH002 (talk) 18:37, 20 January 2015 (UTC)
Oh, OK, I hadn't noticed what you did, thanks for that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:40, 20 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for creating innumerable substantial missing articles, such as Musikhochschule Hannover, Johan van der Meer and John H. Dessauer, sometimes before I even ask - at least that's how it feels, - repeating: you are an awesome Wikipedian (18 March 2009, 9 May 2009)!

The Good Article Barnstar
For your efforts in bringing Waldorf Astoria New York to GA. — Ssven2 speak 2 me 03:47, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Ssven, a core article I think, nice to have some positive support. We hope also did a lot with finding images and some bits and pieces though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:03, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Nice one, Blofeld. Did you see a 5 or 6 man effort get United States to GA the other day, an article that is viewed annually by 11 million people? I'm glad we beefed up Denmark Street to GA as it motivated me to at least go and grab a gig from the 12 Bar Club before it shut up shop. ([1]) Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:16, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
Thanks. I wasn't aware of the drive to get USA up to GA, should probably be locked once fully written.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:32, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Bekabad[edit]

Hello again! Can you help me cite Google Maps in this article as well? Actually, could you explain how you calculate distances on Google Maps? If I learn how to do it myself, I'll stop bothering you. Nataev talk 13:54, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Just copy and paste the reference from one into the other. Click the link on the coordinates. Copy and paste the goole map url into it. in google maps click get directions or whatever and the option to add distances will come up.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:00, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

Got it. Turns out it's a piece of cake. I was too lazy to find it out for myself. :) Thanks again! Nataev talk 07:26, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Vivien Leigh[edit]

Copy/paste from my talk page: Hi User:Bzuk), I hope you didn't perceive my comment on the talk page in the way that my arch nemesis Sandy G did. I don't think there was anything arrogant or dismissive about it. I was just alarmed that SchroCat was going to give up on the article because of an infobox tiff and I know he has a book on its way which I think will really help it and am certain he'd greatly improve if allowed to edit it. Ideally I'd like you to come to an agreement and work together. Keep up the great work anyway!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:09, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

How precious, you have an "arch nemesis"?! I fear that many of us, myself included, put waaay too much emphasis on what we do in this wikywackywonderland. I did some work on the Vivien Leigh article, and used the framework of the contemporary Elizabeth Taylor article as a bit of a model. Some other editors may not like infoboxes at all, and judging by the Lawrence Olivier article, have dispensed with them, in their entirety. There is no animosity to yourself or others and the Vivien Leigh article can only be improved with the contributions of others, as no one really owns or acts as gate keeper of articles. When a few other editors made some changes to the infobox, I concluded that a consensus for change was being generated, and "c'est la vie". FWiW Bzuk (talk) 18:49, 22 January 2015 (UTC)
Judy Garland and Bette Davis I think will be picked up on soon enough. Garland in particular needs a huge amount of work. I appreciate what Her Haughtiness does or did with FAs, but every encounter with her since 2006 has been a negative one and I think that says a lot.. What Sandy doesn't realise is that Schro could have a lot of valuable content to add to it and I was trying to (politely) suggest a way to let things proceed productively without conflict.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:51, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

More honey than vinegar may have worked better in the talk string. Indicating that someone's work is "useless drivel", "trivial", "pointless" and "crap" is probably not the best way to establish collaboration. Then having someone come along to endorse and validate that type of incivil dialogue? FWiW Bzuk (talk) 21:10, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

And being monumentally arrogant in your response (pretty much a 'fuck you - I'm doing this and I don't give a toss what your opinion is') is certainly the way to drive others away muttering dark words about article ownership. As it is, the "useless drivel", "trivial", "pointless" and "crap" information you've decided to include in the box leaves more questions than it answers (twice-divorced Roman Catholic? She used to live in a cemetery?) Your loss, not mine, but next time, don't be so dismissive of other people's opinions just because they don't agree with your precious ones. - SchroCat (talk) 12:35, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
I'm staying out of it Bzuk, but I would like to see some agreement between you both!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:31, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

This isn't going anywhere fast, but I reiterate that after deletions, and BRD was invoked, I explained the reasoning behind my edits, another editor decided to change the dates in the infobox, and that wasn't as big an issue. Other editors may not agree, but the infobox was already established, and other similar articles had about the same amount of information as I was using, Elizabeth Taylor as an example. Again, deriding other's submissions was not my intention but removing information that helps the reader understand the complexity of someone's life, was problematic. It seemed to come down to an issue of removing all the additional information or not, and if a consensus could be reached, that could be the ultimate solution. Quoting someone else who contributes to film articles, "... (there are) silly time wasters who contribute nothing on here fussing about infoboxes and incivility." So I will now stop. FWiW Bzuk (talk) 15:36, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

"information that helps the reader understand the complexity of someone's life": You will never, ever find information that helps the reader understand the complexity of someone's life in an infobox. You will find "facts", normally out of context and always stripped of nuance. You will never find "understanding". Your approach to the who sitution was bloody shoddy Bzuk, and you drove away someone prepared to help with what I can only see was unguarded arrogance, however much you try and dress it up. - SchroCat (talk) 15:43, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

For the barnstar!! Now about Meryl Streep, there are some newer listings of photos at Flickr which I can upload. Also found something I think you'll like but have to get it cut and uploaded. We may be able to find some theater photos or some New York Shakespeare Festival photos for her later, but there are none around as of now that are "legal". When theater and "Shakespeare Fest" (New York or American) photos come up, I try to upload as many as I can find. DYK for Waldorf Astoria New York[edit]

 — Crisco 1492 (talk) 12:45, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

Viriditas[edit]

Sadly this editor is utterly without a shred of honour, or enough judgement to know when they are deeply misguided in their approach. Look at their approach when they petulently and misguidedly dragged me to ANI last night: they are utterly unwilling to take on board the fact that they are in a large part to blame - even though several people have bluntly told them that. They continue to defend their chum despite a number of people saying Orange overstepped the mark badly, and they resorted to base lying to try and "prove" a case against me. Even neutral third parties posting independent advice to this editor (see here) are brushed off with utterly illogical nonsense showing classic signs of WP:ICANTHEARYOU and an arrogant won't-back-down-at-any-cost mentality that does much to damage the project. I've walked away from that editor as there is little constructive reason to stay in communication with them, but I will still be interested to see if Orange has the decency to strike their despicable comment when they are next online. - SchroCat (talk) 09:20, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Yah, he's quite a cretin if he thinks that certain trolls and nasties on here don't directly influence others leaving. One editor could be racially abused for months on end for instance and finally they can no longer tolerate it and leave in disgust. Given that they're the ones who put up the "retire" notice, that was their choice with no influence? Utter bollocks. People do, and regularly so, cause other editors to sour their views towards the project and walk out, and if he can't see that he's a prime example of what is wrong with the project. BTW, wasn't Viriditas that political party Robert Kilroy Silk represented :-)?♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:24, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

If it is, that speaks volumes! PMSL! - SchroCat (talk) 09:32, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

PMSL! What a numpty! This guy is such a monumental hypocrite - lies and incivility all wrapped up in one warped package (and one that tries to hide behind his version of civility lectures too)! Given his modus operandi I suspect he's a borderline troll who just can't help himself. I wonder if he actually understands just how it makes him look - it would be quite funny if it wasn't quite so pathetic! - SchroCat (talk) 18:47, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
I can't help but picture Kilroy now with his Dynasty/Dallas hair and tan!!♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:58, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

The bloody bloody bloody bloody bloody.....[edit]

I can't leave tagged articles alone, look what I've done to Cassetteboy. It'll be a GA at this rate. Actually, I wonder if I can trade improving their article for Cassetteboy vs Jimbo Wales. Please, please..... Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:29, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Jimbo's so backwards in his approach to encyclopedia building that he probably still uses them!♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:35, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Just looking at his page on Wikiquote, I can come up with a mashup of "I frequently counsel people who are getting" "a sausage." "We are" "the party of the jerks." "We come from" "a cheerful small town where everyone waves" "it pretty much all the time". It's got to be doable. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:38, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
"a cheerful small town where everyone waves"" -Is that a metaphor for his obsession with civility on wikipedia?♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:40, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

The Waldorf again[edit]

I might be able to get a photo of Philippe (saying this off the top of my head based on news stories I've seen} and know there are obituaries in the papers for him. Will need to try looking for Salamone. Did you see there were more than 6,000 "reads" for the article yesterday? We hope (talk) 14:36, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

I didn't. but I was annoyed that they put the article bottom, it should have been the top one with a photo, it might have got 15,000 if they'd done that.♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:47, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

I'll work on those 2 after work. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:26, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Well, so far, no obit, but a lot of interesting information. It seems Philippe was fired by the W-A for booking Harry Bellafonte after it was learned he was an African-American. He was also in trouble with the IRS for taxes, and went from the W-A to the Hotel Astor. From there, he became part of an owners' group of Le Pavillon. He began building a luxury resort called La Belle Creole at St. Martin, FWI, but it was never finished until quite some time after his 1978 death. He also had hopes to build a casino there. Take a look at this 2 page news story. His first wife was actress fr:Mony Dalmès, and his second was food writer Poppy Cannon. He was romantically involved with Grace Kelly before her marriage and also Barbara Walters. Sound interesting? We hope (talk) 17:36, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

I knew about Kelly of course as it was in the book! Nice house too!♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:41, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

A bit of a change--Poppy was his first wife-she then married Walter White. Poppy and Philippe had at least one child, a daughter, Claudia. Philippe was husband #2. We hope (talk) 17:45, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

My book says his second wife was Monique Darnaise.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:48, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Then maybe Mony was #3--he was married to her in the early 1950s according to news stories. We hope (talk) 17:56, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Do we know when he divorced Poppy as I'm pretty sure than by 1952 or 53 he was married to Mony as he had her flown over from France to appear at the ball. My book definitely says his second wife was Monique Darnaise but googling her I see no hits, is it possible that was another name for Mony? The names look similar and both were apparently Comedie Francaise stars.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:01, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Have just found the details of the marriage to Poppy 1941-1949 one daughter, Claudia. According to the unauthorized bio of BW, he was married 3 times. It also says he was 18 years older than BW, so he was born circa 1911. It's possible this is a variation of her name. They were married circa 1952 but it looks like there was some marriage trouble circa 1961. We hope (talk) 18:20, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
1910, fortunately I was able to find the dates in the Waldorf book which devotes a chapter to him. He was definitely married at least three times as Lang said he was invited to dinner with him and his young third wife but didn't say if it was Mony or not. He must have got through a lot of women if he also dated Grace before her marriage in 1956!! Amazed that there's no photos of him given his status.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:21, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
I found some non free newspaper photos of him; no free use one so far. We can use one of them. We hope (talk) 18:31, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
That's something I guess. I'm envisaging a creepy, slimy looking French lothario, sort of like a cross between Jean-Christophe Novelli and Christopher Lee LOL. This is the sort of article which is most valuable on wikipedia IMO, one in which you find forgotten unsung heroes from the past from a book and glean information from various sources to produce something half decent. They're the most enjoyable to research I think and piece together.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:38, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Now, when you look at her fr:WP page, Mony was born in 1914--only 4 years younger than Philippe. There must have been a younger Mme. Philippe after Mony. I may also have a photo of Mony. I also do genealogy and some time ago, I "chased" a man across the US at the request of a relative. The relative had tried to locate some US record of him and failed. The missing man had changed his first name and left for the US because he felt he had shamed his family. Occasionally, the man would write home and after he died, his widow wrote to her in-laws, informing them of his death. The relatives had sent me scans of the letters, so I had addresses in St. Louis, where he settled. Through old census records, I was able to trace him to the address of the letter he'd written, and later trace the widow from the one she wrote after his death. Was able to find obituaries for them both and learn where they had been buried. During the "chase" I wondered what the fellow looked like. When his relative published a book, he sent me a copy and there was a photo of the missing man in it. Bottom line, I was glad to finally put a face on the fellow I'd been tracking through old records for so long! :) We hope (talk) 19:06, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Will start Mony, but not today! ♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:15, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

There's another wife!! I just stumbled upon her on page 219 by fluke, a C. C. Philippe, cited as his third wife. Mony and Monique as suspected must be the same. Perhaps the third wife was the "young" one? Can you find what her name might be, there was a prominent ball on May 15 1976 in which she attended with an M. Cabel Woodward and Mrs George Lang.. Second had to be Dalmes, [2]Dr. Blofeld 19:25, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Groan, there's yet another wife, [3] Helga... Ah the C.C of course was Claude not the name of his wife, Mrs C.C. Philippe is Helga, his third and final wife. Got it I think :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:56, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
I think this is right, Helga. He was Claudius Charles Philippe, so she could be referred to as Mrs. C. C. Philippe. Nothing turned up at newspapers.com for the May date or some days after using "Philippe" as the search word. We hope (talk) 20:12, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

I really think this one will be worth getting to GA too. There's not a terrible amount on him so it should be easier. I think we can do it with gleaning enough material. Lucille Circle dinners might have some photos and more info. They seem notable enough to probably have an article on too.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:54, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Nice one We hope, I was pretty close wasn't I with Christopher Lee, although more like Lee, Frederic Chopin and Charles Boyer combined than him and Jean Christoph hehe!♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:20, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Well, let's remember that "suave" and "debonair", as he likely was, are fairly direct routes to a woman's heart. ;) I've also found quite a lot on his predecessor and want to expand what we have on Oscar too! I'll take one more try as I just thought of somewhere there may be a better quality and free photo of him.We hope (talk) 22:05, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
And I need to upload the photo of Alphonse Salamone--found only one that I'm sure is the right man--non free. The information about La Belle Creole is all that's current and reliable. There are some websites showing the place and noting that it had been razed at some point in 2014, but I haven't found a RS that says this was done. Not certain if the developer mentioned in the Daily Herald article was able to convince the French government to give him the needed permits before he moved on or what. We hope (talk) 20:50, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
Re: Claude Philippe--I think we're good unless BW suddenly remembers (or tells) enough about him to write another autobiography. :-) We hope (talk) 15:01, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Yeah I think we were lucky to find all that on him!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:16, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

I would like to help but I can not help with this article because I am banned from articles on post 1900 Serbs and Serbia related articles. Sorry.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 20:51, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

That's unfortunate Antidiskriminator!! Can you recommend another active Serbian speaker who might help?♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:52, 27 January 2015 (UTC)

Few remained active and unsanctioned. Maybe FkpCascais can help if they are not currently under some sanctions.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 21:00, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
Sure, I can try to help if I can. What is it about? FkpCascais (talk) 01:59, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
I thought I was banned by Drmies, but Drmies explained me that it was actually the community who banned me. Here is a link to discussion in which the community reached consensus to ban me. Please don't bother with opening a post requesting some modification to my topic ban. More or less all members of the community who reached consensus to ban me were involved in numerous disputes with me connected with topics from which I was banned, so I am afraid that the only consensus they could reach would be to broaden my ban or to ban me indefinetely. It is easy to find evidence of my breach of topic ban, like some edit like this (diff). Post 1900 Serbs and Serbia were never my main scope of interest anyway. Thanks for your interest and all the best. --Antidiskriminator (talk) 20:31, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
Does Drmies or anybody else watching think it's right that Anti isn't permitted to proof read the hidden text within Ana Simonović because of his ban? I don't. Perhaps his ban could be revised to allow for translation requests by other editors on non controversial topics? What's important here is content. User:Joy, User:Diannaa and User:EdJohnston may wish to say something. I think a revision of his ban to allow for the odd translation request on topics which are unlikely to be inflamed is in order here.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:40, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
Ernst, I gotta run right now, but I'll just say that I'm all for editors becoming untopicbanned. Drmies (talk) 20:41, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
I'd like to see a reversal to that ban myself. However, I won't do anything to put Antidiskriminator in harm's way. It's a pity, though, that I can't ask for his assistance with translating Serbian-language women writer bios for Women's History Month, which will begin in about 30 days. --Rosiestep (talk) 15:21, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
I don't seriously think that asking to lift some of the extent of the ban would be a potential threat to Anti, quite the opposite. I'm not sure how it could make things worse. I'm just greatly concerned that so many Serbian translators are banned from all Serbian topics when it's clear some of them are willing to do much useful work without getting into conflict. It's going to stall growth and improvement in certain areas.15:26, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
The place to discuss this is at WP:AN, not here. Asking for translations on his talk page is probably not a good idea, as for him to do so could be interpreted as a violation of his topic ban. Better to ask via email -- Diannaa (talk) 19:35, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

After being advised of Antidiskriminator's topic ban, why do you encourage him to break it? This unlikely to be the best approach. bobrayner (talk) 19:44, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

How is it breaking it by translating a random article on his user talk page? I thought the ban would only apply to articles. I tried to get some response from the people who banned but failed to, and I believe everybody is acting utterly irresponsibly in not letting this editor improve the stub I created. Obviously there's a reason why he's topic banned, but I really think it's quite worrying if we've banned most of the Serbian speaking editors from editing ALL post 1900 articles here from a systematic bias point of view. I think this editor should be given some flexibility in helping translate some articles created by either myself or Rosie as they genuinely help wikipedia.♦ Dr. Blofeld 19:49, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

(edit conflict)

I don't think lack of the response of Diannaa matters too much here, especially because they not uninvolved in this matter. They belong to a small group of editors who were involoved in disputes with me before and who reached consensus to ban me. As explained by admin who banned me, since I was banned by the community only the community can decide about modifications to the ban. Not Diannaa. If you look carefully at the links I provided above, my addition of one comma (diff) to the text about Albanian partisans near Tirana in Albania was interpreted by the community as breach of my topic ban to post-1900 Serbia and Serbs. There is no doubt that translating the text you posted at my talkpage would be perceived as serious violation of my topic ban. I appreciate your and Rosiestep's wish to see reduction or reversal to my topic ban, but I think the only way is posting an appeal. I will consider doing it. If I decide to post an appeal, I would appreciate if you two don't support me at admin's noticeboard. Thanks.--Antidiskriminator (talk) 19:55, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
Unfortunately many on here have a heavy handed approach to dealing with people who they believe are a threat to neutrality. Serbian articles are really going to suffer for this when it's clear that beyond whatever it was that got you topic banned you're genuinely willing to help wikipedia articles. I have no intention of taking it to a noticeboard, but I think it's downright petty that you can't translate the odd article for Rosie or myself which have bugger all to do with Albania on your user talk page.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:06, 31 January 2015 (UTC)

Suzanne Farrington[edit]

See this exchange and the edit history of this new article that was spawned from the work on Vivien Leigh. There was actually a cordial discourse by two editors who had a previously acrimonious relationship; I can only say "will wonders never cease". FWiW Bzuk (talk) 14:06, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

Glad to see it, and good work!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:10, 28 January 2015 (UTC)

For your amusement[edit]

Hello DB. There was a Clara Bow Incident last night. The most amusing part took place here. Sadly, I found the whole thing to be a dull and uninteresting sequel to the original film :-) MarnetteD|Talk 13:39, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Did he sleep around with his co stars too :-)? There seems to be a virus on here at the moment making a lot of editors behave in a particularly annoying way.. Still, at least he's right about Kubrick!♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:16, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
Yep that is true. I noticed Cinema Paradiso was added to the list. Here is a bit of Philippe Noiret trivia for you. Two of his films that were big hits in the US are CP and Il Postino: The Postman. Unfortunately, he did not speak Italian so his lines were dubbed in both films. He had such a rich and expressive voice that I wish more people on this side of the pond had gotten to hear it. If you haven't seen it Coup de Torchon is a marvelous film. He appeared with Michel Serrault in Pile ou Face and watching them try to upstage each other with their acting styles was a ton o' fun. Cheers. MarnetteD|Talk 15:14, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
Yes, the 1988 crown has been stolen twice from Rain Man in a week or so! There was a certain poignance to Cinema Paradiso and reflection which had a profound impact on me. A wonderful film I thought. I will add those to my long list to see later, LOL I don't think that list will ever diminish! Currently half way through watching the first of the many Streep films I've not seen, she was really quite strikingly attractive in the late 70s and early 80s. There's a certain Eastern European look about her IMO, Czech or Polish sort of thing, so Sophie's Choice was quite appropriate casting! I intend to watch the remainder of her films as I write the article of course to make sure I have a good understanding!♦ Dr. Blofeld 15:29, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Bramshill House[edit]

Do you know when Henson died? I see the photos are from 1923. I just ran his name in search and got no information. We hope (talk) 21:57, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Right noe, I'm trying to read through File:Bramshill, its history and architecture (by Sir William H. Cope).pdf--there are floor plans and may have more than one photo in it. We hope (talk) 22:13, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

A. E. Henson (1885-1972)... I just think it needs to be sorted before the FAC as somebody is bound to investigate. I'll be nomming for FA in a day or two once Brian's issues are all settled. Will return to Philippe tomorrow, haven't been editing today but for addressing the PR.♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:27, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

I'd remove them because the license for them says "life of author + 70 years". With him dying in 1972, this is a problem. The photos in the pdf are all exterior shots. I have access to some 3 large photos from Baudenkmaeler im Grossbritanien published in 1894 by Ernst Wasmuth, Berlin, but they're loose--no longer in the book. I need to figure out how to make them connect with something that proves they're from this particular book in order to upload & use them. We hope (talk) 22:38, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
OK, Doc. I'd change these 3:
These are the 3 Henson photos.

I was able to find a copy of this File:Bramshill House olden times.jpg--the color print is by him also; he died in 1878, so no worries. Was able to find two more of his black & white works which I uploaded in case you need/want them: File:Bramshill_House_stairs_to_the_terrace.jpg and File:Bramshill House postern gate.jpg. The more recent ones all look to be in good stead; there was nothing at Flickr that we could use that's compatible with our licensing. Let me know if you want me to grab any of the floor plans from the Commons pdf above. We hope (talk) 00:13, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, the plan would be good seems as we now have nothing :-(. Going to try asking for some images again..♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:23, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

From the pdf at Commons:
See if these help. We hope (talk) 14:27, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Yes, I'll use the plans thanks, Frist Floor had probably better be renamed from the typo first though :-)♦ Dr. Blofeld 14:30, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

File:First Floor Bramshill House.jpg Sorry--while uploading these I was wondering if the link to the pdf would work out to say these are derived from the book. We hope (talk) 14:51, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Doctor Doctor Need help[edit]

Hi Doctor Blofeld, you have done a lot of work on Hindi movies need some help- had created an article long time ago on a movie called Pratigya- it's a 1975 film starring Dharmendra and was one of the top 5 hits of the year- the article somehow got deleted and on resubmission it is being denied notability while non enitity movies like Pratigya (2008 Film) are not deleted, I have no desire to seek to delete anything but it is sad that a A grade movie is being denied it's space- since you too have done a lot of work on Hindi films can you help out on this please- trying to create the article as Pratigya (1975 film), any help would be appreciated Haphar (talk) 18:12, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Hullo, yes I remember you, glad you're back. Ask Ezhiki to restore the 75 film to your user space.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:15, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Do you mean this deleted page→Pratigya (1975 film)? There's nothing there but a redirect to Draft:Pratigya, and that one is still accessible.—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); January 30, 2015; 18:19 (UTC)
Yes that's the article in Draft:Pratigya?♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:21, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
Created a disambig page Pratigya and an article Pratigya (1975 film)- let me know if any improvements are required Haphar (talk) 18:45, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Le Pavillion[edit]

Let me see what's out there--the restaurant actually began during the 1939 World's Fair; it opened in its permanent location in 1941--across from the St. Regis Hotel. We hope (talk) 19:41, 30 January 2015 (UTC)

Sorry--there's a nice one with a CC license but it's ND. Commons won't accept photos that don't allow derivatives. We hope (talk) 20:08, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
File:La placette de la Belle Créole (1217394519).jpg Try this after rotatebot has worked--about a day. I tried uploading a copy that was correctly rotated but upload turned it the same way Flickr upload bot did. This is a 2007 photo of La Belle Creole. We hope (talk) 20:30, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
That's probably an even better consolation prize, well done WH!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:34, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
According to what the photographer has about it, it's quite a few photos stitched together. It's actually too large for hosting on Flickr, so it's downloaded to you on demand. Talk about wallpaper! :-) We hope (talk) 20:36, 30 January 2015 (UTC)
