Dr. Blofeld: I understand that you have an interest in red links for Dutch people. Would you mind moving this translation to mainspace? You'll find there's plenty of work to do. While you're at it, perhaps you can created the currently red-linked category, Category:Cemeteries in Amsterdam. The cemetery is chock full of Rijksmonuments, so notability is a given. Thank you so much, kind sir. 207.157.121.92 (talk) 21:29, 3 April 2012 (UTC)

Hey there. I was wondering if you could take a look at Wikipedia:Featured topic candidates/Mythology of The X-Files, Volume 1/archive1; several of the articles in the nominated topic are ones you reviewed at GAN for me so your input would be really helpful. WP:GTC really seems to have stalled so any additional input might help to give it a nudge into movement again if you have the time to drop by. Africa and elsewhere[edit]

Right now I'm working on getting together e-mails on all, yes, all, the encyclopedias and dictionaries I find reviewed in the various databanks I have access to. With luck, these will then be able to be added to the relevant project pages, and, maybe, we could create separate lists for each project of the articles related to that project found in the various books, maybe even with citations for each. I tend to think that might help both establish notability of the subjects, as well as make it easier to create and develop those central articles. Regarding assessment, unfortunately, right now, my time is pretty much occupied getting the e-mails of the various reference books together. When I'm done, hopefully by the end of the month, I can send them out to the interested projects and get a bit more to articles. But there are I think about 20,000 such encyclopedias and dictionaries I know of, so I don't think that there will be any problems for interested editors in developing content once they're done. John Carter (talk) 01:37, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Did see the assessment info. Probably by the end of the month, when I'm through the JSTOR and a bit further through developing the User:John Carter/Religion reference page, I will probably have a bit more time. That page looks to have about 10% of the sources, and it should be a good template for what to expect later. So, with any luck, around the beginning of next month I can get to the assessments to bring it up to 100,000. John Carter (talk) 00:04, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Music books[edit]

I'm sure - I don't see why not. Surely there are enough notable books to make such a category worthwhile. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:15, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Category:Textbooks should cover it, no? --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:19, 4 April 2012 (UTC)
Perhaps, but they are textbooks. I'd add it in, too.

Well, not necessarily. Perhaps Category:Music textbooks, with a subset of Category:Music education books? There are a few music textbooks out there that are defined textbooks. Gradus ad Parnassum, for one - and the fact that we don't have a separate article for that bothers me, incidentally.
The trouble with the pasty place is that it's in Vienna, so it's a bit of a hike for me. But I fully intend to get there and try its wares before too much longer. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 17:41, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Pen-y-clawdd[edit]

Evening Dr B. Hope you're well. I have a puzzle which MartinEvans and I thought you may be able to help with. I've given some details on the above page about Pen-y-Clawdd Court and listed it as a Grade I Listed building in Monmouthshire. But I now think the details I've quoted refer to another Pen-y-Clawdd Court. My doubts arise from, firstly, the fact that RCAHMW lists Pen-y-Clawdd Court as being in the parish of Llanvihangel Crucorney, which plainly the Court between Raglan and Monmouth isn't, and, secondly, because the description in RCAHMW, and the pictures from a link I've found here [[2]], don't look at all like the Pen-y-Clawdd Court I photographed a few weekends ago. But Newman's Monmouthshire only lists one Pen-y-Clawdd Court and his description "notable only for the nobly scaled red brick arch close up to the road" definitely does match the house I photographed, the pictures of which I was going to upload until I got cold feet.

So, I think there are actually two Pen-y-Clawdd Courts. But why does Newman not list the one near Abergavenny, which looks much more interesting and which I think is Grade I, but does list the one near Raglan which he acknowledges is only notable for its gate? Can it be that he's overlooked the more important of the two? I'd really appreciate any thoughts you may have. I shall also go and ask Ghmyrtle as he's got a lot of local knowledge.

As an aside, when shall we push Burges forward? We could tinker/add for ever but it might be better to do that in response to FA reviewing? Let me know what you think. Best regards. KJP1 (talk) 19:32, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

JSTOR etc[edit]

Hi Doc,

I notice you signed up for the recent JSTOR application page, which'll be great if access can be sorted. In the meantime, have you ever asked for articles at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request; I find the guys there are very helpful in providing me with the odd journal article when I really think it'll advance what I'm working on. Best regards, Simon Burchell (talk) 20:46, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi Simon. I haven't, nope. Usually I'm quite spoiled by google books but occasionally JSTOR turns up some detailed articles which in google books only turns up scraps and its frustrating not being able to read the full articles. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:53, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

List of The Avengers and The New Avengers cast members[edit]

Terrific R&H site. As for The avengers i looked at the first episode Hot Snow in my Avengers Book and found the following not listed in the wikipage above. Charles Wade, Alister Williamson, Astor Sklair, June Monkhouse, and Robert James. I think a lot will be red lined. I will look at some more episodes. As for the episode list it always surprises me there are no writer/director credits as is standard.REVUpminster (talk) 21:00, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

  • i've added names not on the list from the first 10 episodes but I've not wikilinked them. 140 to go,I'll do a few every day.REVUpminster (talk) 22:04, 4 April 2012 (UTC)

Avengers episodes[edit]

Hello Blofeld, thanks for the invite to participate in developing individual articles for the Avengers episodes. I think the best thing to do is for yourself to construct a prototype page for one episode to act as a template for others to follow. Once a format is arrived at, all that should be required is to add the relevant header, plot and cast list etc. to each page. If you want to allocate me some episodes to do I will have a crack at it. (A. Carty (talk) 08:57, 5 April 2012 (UTC))

Just wanted to drop a note saying good work on the The Avengers "Hot Snow" episode article. One of the things that has always struck me when I watch the surviving footage is when we see a Police Box at one point. Since this episode aired more than two and a half years before Dr Who started it helps to illustrate that they were ubiquitous to British life before the TARDIS became an icon. I know that this is pure WP:OR and wouldn't fit anywhere in the article but I thought I would mention it just for your info. On another note did you know that the 50th Anniversary DVD box set [3] contains recreations of some of the missing episodes of the first season using pics that were taken from the original broadcast? These pics were also included in the booklet that came with the season 1 and 2 DVD set [4]. I mention them on the off chance that they might be useful as you continue your work on the episode articles. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 15:59, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

I didn't but I did look at that box set and saw it was £146 earlier this morning. I have Randall and Hopkirk Deceased all on DVD but not Avengers. I saw an episode the other day on one of the digital channels and made me want to see them all! I'd forgotten how much I used to love the Avengers. Man from UNCLE was pretty cool too. I'm going to start the episodes which need dabbing first otherwise the red links will probably be removed by the time I get to them in the hatnotes.♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:02, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your request. Fortunately a year or so ago I was a little flush and bought the complete set mentioned above so I will be happy to watch the episode. On the other hand life off wiki is a little busy at the moment so I may not be able to get to it right away. If that is a problem I'll offer my apologies but I do look forward to rewatching the episode. MarnetteD | Talk 19:55, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Hi again. I got to the episode this morning and have made some adjustments based on my viewing. For the plot I made edits by paragraph to try and make checking things a little easier for you. Be aware there may be a touch too much detail for some editors around here but that doesn't bother me. I also won't be bothered if you dislike any of my changes and want to change them back. Rather than using two rocks I think that Steed tore off a bit of the fence so that he would have a sharp point to put against the bullet. He then hit the stick with a rock that he had picked up a few moments earlier.
I'll tell ya - that is one of the all time great theme songs to open a show and the remastering of the episode makes it look sharper and more vivid than when it was originally broadcast in either the UK or the US back in the 60's. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 18:59, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks Blofeld for rescuing A Chorus of Frogs. (A. Carty (talk) 15:39, 10 April 2012 (UTC))

TV episodes[edit]

Great work on the Avengers pilot. Have you seen Wikipedia:Television_episodes#Important_articles_to_be_created?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 13:45, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks. I've hadn't. But The Avengers is one of my favourite series and some of the episodes have quite a bit of book coverage so I think they're worth starting. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:49, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

If you have the books, you are probably one of the few people with access and interest to some of the episodes from that era.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 15:46, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Why are you putting episodes in different categories by season? That seems unusual to me.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 03:30, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Strange you would consider it unusual given that most long series on wikipedia like Buffy and Simpsons are split by series.♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:22, 6 April 2012 (UTC)
Looking at Category:Television episodes by series I don't see so many cats with subcats. It's probably 4 or 5 to 1 in favor of no subcats.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 15:29, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

I look for a similar size production, Buffy the Vampire, and that was the first one I looked at and copied the categories.♦ Dr. Blofeld 18:15, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

Avengers castlist[edit]

Progress report: Have done the first 50 episodes. I thought it would get easier with the same actors turning up playing different parts but I must have doubled the list so far. I have deliberately not looked to wikilink them although I recognize actors who have their own page. That can be done later. I shall plough on at ten a day as it is a boring task.REVUpminster (talk) 19:53, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

  • Have completed the 161 Avenger episodes. Will start on New Avengers tomorrow. I shall note them as names NA1 etc.REVUpminster (talk) 12:10, 19 April 2012 (UTC)
  • Have completed the 26 NA episode plus a few corrections. A lot of canadian actors.REVUpminster (talk) 13:28, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Does QPQ work?[edit]

I recently suggested that Template:Did you know nominations/Guy Kabeya Muya, Entre la coupe et l'élection could be turned into a quad. Maybe that was a mistake - feel free to back it out - it seems unrealistic to expect anyone to review four articles these days. But in November 2010 we had the case of the ten U's, all nominated, reviewed and approved as one entry. Something in the mood has changed since then. It seems sourer, somehow, more a question of pushing through entries against opposition than working together to get a list of interesting hooks. Do you have that feeling or is it just me? Aymatth2 (talk) 19:54, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

I completely agree with you. Its become petty. I strongly disappoved of QPQ from the moment it was proposed. Luckily they simplified the nomination process so i began contributing again. When you forget to do a review you always get somebody leaving a "QPQ please" and it comes across as really petty, sours the atmosphere as you say. You contribute four articles, why should you be expected to review four articles is the way I see it. It is surely off putting in regards to motivation. If you want to turn it into a quad I'll renominate, just suggest and hook and the articles you want. I don't mind reviewing what is needed.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:10, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

  • I sort of did turn it into a quad, maybe, which I suspect will take a long time to clear. But these are just four routine short articles, not of any great interest. I really don't care about them. I am more wondering if it is worth starting a discussion on the process. My vague thinking is that there used to be editors who specialized in DYK reviews, complained about the volume, and were very good at it. That process was independent of the nomination process. Connecting the processes may have been a mistake. Aymatth2 (talk) 22:38, 8 April 2012 (UTC)

Xainza County DYK[edit]

A million thanks for including me in the DYK award. I am chuffed and honoured! I didn't add that much but really had to search for it, and it got me into doing the article on the Changtang Nature Reserve, so I will gratefully accept the recognition. It will be a welcome addition to my awards page.

Just the night before last I sent the files for a much-revised 2nd edition of my first book, The Jade Gate to Rome, on the Hou Hanshu off to the publishers – but I think it will probably be months before they get it on the market. I am very excited to finally send it off! It is to be published in Singapore.

Now, I will start work to get a another book I have been working on for many years ready for publication. It is an annotated translation of the 3rd century Weilüe, which also deals with the Silk Routes but has more details on the Roman Empire and also a bit on the maritime trade between China and Egypt and the East African coast.

Me old back is keeping me pretty well glued to my bed so I am very fortunate to have these projects or I would die of boredom.

Hope all is going really well for you - I send you squillions of good wishes. Thanks so much, John Hill (talk) 00:37, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC)[edit]

The article Pacific Basin Economic Council (PBEC) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

non-notable

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Quick update[edit]

3 provinces down (OK, 2 were small but about 10 of 31 are small as well). On to Tehran Prov, where several planned communities have village status (probably to be promoted eventually), including 1 with over 60,000 population. Now that's a big village, considering a number of Iranian cities in the far flung outer provinces have fewer than 1000. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 20:07, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

For census purposes, Iran is divvied into 22 numbered, but otherwise unnamed districts, which are reported on separately. Corresponding names to numbers (and is there a 1:1 correspondence?) is beyond what my sources say. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 22:40, 9 April 2012 (UTC)

That's fine. I have it set up to redirect to my other account, too. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:29, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Perhaps. I'll try to formulate something coherent before I leave, though. Especially as tonight's rehearsal night, which means I'll be away from the home computer for a while. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:28, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Eh, it's not really a problem most of the time. Long as I don't let it take over my workday I can usually squeak something out when I have a free moment. It's finding the time to properly string words together that tends to be the real problem. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:35, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Not that I can recall. Honestly, I've been rather busy at the office over the past few weeks, and sometimes I file something away for future response and then forget about it. I'm sorry about that - it's rather ADD-ish of me. Insofar as I'm able to maintain a high edit count, incidentally, much of it's due to using HotCat, which fills in most of my work for me. Which means that I can fire off an edit in no time flat, usually while I'm hanging on the phone waiting for something. (Who says I can't multitask?) --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:41, 10 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, the other problem is that the end of the day always approaches more quickly than I expected, which means that I start running out of time before I leave, and then have to leave something hanging. Like today, actually - sorry about that. I'll shoot you an e-mail soon as I'm home tonight. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:23, 10 April 2012 (UTC)

Amdo Town etc[edit]

Hi! I finally got around to doing a little on Amdo County and town. This "shabby town" (as one guidebook put it) is now closed to tourists and is no longer a stopover for buses on the route between Golmud and Lhasa, so my books have very little on it. Anyway, I added a little including a blockquote on the "town." Sorry, it seems I have less than you on Cona Lake. All best wishes, John Hill (talk) 06:13, 11 April 2012 (UTC)

Mrs Peel's first ep[edit]

I finally got to view it this morning and have worked on the plot section accordingly. The DVD also has a commentary with a couple of the people who created the episode. When I get a chance to listed to their memories I'll leave you a note of there is anything of interest that might be included in the article. MarnetteD | Talk 14:47, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm still working my way thru the commentary but I wanted to let you know that they do note the fact that Patrick Newall was in this ep several years before he played "Mother". Also here is a link that (after you scroll down) has some pictures of Elizabeth Shepherd as Mrs Peel [5]. I don't know if there is anyway to add this to the article so I post them here FYI. Cheers. MarnetteD | Talk 20:50, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
The DVD commentary is with Brian Clemens and Roy Ward Baker. The thing of note that they mention that you might want to add to the article is the fact that this was the first episode shot entirely on film. They also mention that the interiors were filmed at a different studio than they had used during the Cathy Gale years but they didn't mention a name. I hope that the books that you are using mention the reference that they make to Mrs Gale (and its sly remark on Honor Blackman) in the episode "Too Many Christmas Trees" - if they don't let me know and I will fill you in. MarnetteD | Talk 03:49, 15 April 2012 (UTC)
I sure do - I mentioned that in an earlier message but you get so many posts to your talk page that it would be easy to miss. I can't give you quickness because life off-wiki has some travails that are keeping me off line at times but I will be happy to add plot sections when I can. If any of the extras have items of note I'll leave them on the talk pages and you can work them in at your discretion. MarnetteD | Talk 14:13, 15 April 2012 (UTC)

Hadnock House[edit]

The merest scraps. I think it's "Hadnock Court House" (RCAHMW) and "Hadnock Court" (BLBO). If so, it's Grade II listed. I thought it may have been the "Old Court" in Pevsner, Herefordshire p.319, Whitchurch (boundary change?), "Quite large stone house of the 16th to 17th centuries in the form of an irregular E." But I'm not so sure. Does this look like an irregular E? [6]. Doubt it's worth a page, but I could certainly put a line or two in Other on The Doward if you like. Let me know. KJP1 (talk) 18:04, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm too late! KJP1 (talk) 18:35, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
Quite interesting. [7] "rendered stone, with a slate roof", surely the house in the photo. KJP1 (talk) 18:38, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
But I'm a bit worried by the Wyastone Leys history bit. The Court in the photos doesn't look post 1825 at all. It looks much more like 16/17th century, as per the Pevsner entry. I'll do some more digging. KJP1 (talk) 18:46, 13 April 2012 (UTC)
OK. This [8] is, I think, definitely Pevsner's Whitchurch Old Court, so we can discount that. But the photos of Hadnock Court surely don't depict a post-1825 house. Was the original Hadnock Court demolished to provide the stones for Wyastone Leys and did a large farmhouse (the one in the picture - which looks more farmhouse than Court) then elevate itself to the status of Court. It wouldn't be the first time. KJP1 (talk) 19:02, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:TheHillsHaveEyesPart I.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:TheHillsHaveEyesPart I.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. Detailed coverage[edit]

Oh, yes - it's the same with a lot of the smaller US communities. The coverage is a lot more in-depth than it ever has been before. It's still unfortunately spotty, but it's been slowly getting better over the past few years, I've noticed. Still too many unincorporated communities missing, though. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:37, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Yes, the Archives just annouced their donation. I think it's going to take some time to get everything scanned and sorted out, though.
One thing: to the best of my knowledge there's no equivalent in the United States to the Dictionary of National Biography. So our historical biographical articles are somewhat catch-as-catch-can on that count, given that Appleton's Cyclopedia is notoriously unreliable. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:43, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
Well, look at {{Fairfax County, Virginia}}. I haven't even heard of half of those places, and I've lived here for twenty-five years, almost. I wonder where the government gets its data sometimes...I'm not surprised that some of those places don't show up on Google Maps. They don't really exist, if they ever did. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 18:57, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
That's the thing - a lot of the US data comes in some form from old census records. And I think that when it comes to looking at names some of them are twenty or thirty years out of date, if not more. My favorite example is Schneider Crossroads, Virginia - I don't even know what's there now, but it's certainly no "Schneider Crossroads". Probably a subdivision of Sterling or something. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 19:20, 17 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm not likely to be home until late tonight, but I'll try to hit it before bed. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 20:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

FA with a mere 192 citations! When WB's out-citing Einstein, I think it's time to try him for FAC. All the best. KJP1 (talk) 06:54, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Re. Peer Review, you'll recall I did try this at the Architecture Project a while ago - it caused a slight issue when Tim saw it, although I asked for the review long before you or he were involved. Very happy to go that route if you think it's best but it didn't garner a lot by way of comments. One more thing. I know nothing about the FA process but if it's like GA I shall want to be around to respond. I go abroad in early May and will be away for a few weeks, so I think it has to either be sooner - which I'd prefer - or later. Let me know what you think. KJP1 (talk) 21:07, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Okay, sounds fun. Including joint nominations, this is my fifth DYK (well, three are stuck in the works somewhere) so do I have to review an article, or does this only apply if one has five DYK's that have already been featured?--Gilderien Talk|Contribs 17:33, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Tit for tat I'm afraid, I nominated 4 articles earlier, only got around to reviewing 2 so far though.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:37, 19 April 2012 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Ariadne Genomics[edit]

The article Ariadne Genomics has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable company with only a trivial independent ref. Company since acquired by big player [9]. Nothing obvious in google, nothing by PR releases in google news.

Not really. But you can create an account and help build coverage!♦ Dr. Blofeld 16:44, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

Okay, I will take them to TfD. 198.102.153.2 (talk) 17:00, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
If you can add the communes to them I'll see what I can do. It would be counterproductive taking them to AFD.♦ Dr. Blofeld 17:06, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
I'm not taking anything to AFD, I am just sending the completely empty ones to TfD. It would be trivial to recreate them once the articles are created. 198.102.153.2 (talk) 17:13, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

DYK nomination (Toti Soler)[edit]

I've left comments at Template:Did you know nominations/Toti Soler. Would you be able to respond there? On a related note, while reviewing that, I ended up at several related stubs linked from (or a few links away from) that article, which you created on the same day: Jordi Sabatés, Xavier Coll, Feliu Gasull, Festival de Guitarra de Barcelona, Ma Anand Yashu, and Certamen de Guitarra flamenca. Do you have plans to expand those any time soon, and are there really enough sources to sustain articles on those topics? Carcharoth (talk) 06:08, 21 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, judging by your extremely thorough DYK review I'd say that you could argue the same thing until they are developed enough for GA. I believe they are sourced enough to prove notability. The flamenco competitions are notable. I only have doubts about Xavier Coll.♦ Dr. Blofeld 12:15, 21 April 2012 (UTC)
I've updated the nomination, and other concerns were pointed out that I missed. I've failed the nomination, but it should be fairly easy to make fixes to the article as there are likely independent sources verifying the awards (this is more important than whether the DYK nomination passes or not, obviously). Given the Spanish-language sources, I'm not the best person to ask about that. If you look at the thread on WT:DYK (where I asked for help with Spanish-language sources), you can ask there if you want. I also left some additional notes at the nomination that may help. And now they are all split by province at User:Calliopejen1/WIP/Morocco communes - you can go ahead and add them to province articles if you want to - I'm feeling a bit too lazy... Calliopejen1 (talk) 22:08, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

Sunil Agnihotri[edit]

I don't know if you do Bollywood, as in Sunil Agnihotri. There are plenty of sources for this versatile director's work. But TV costume soaps where the cast is likely to break into song at the least excuse are perhaps a bit of an acquired taste. Aymatth2 (talk) 19:24, 22 April 2012 (UTC)

If you're looking for a country that could stand some work, Paraguay's a good one to look at. There aren't even by-department categories for about half the country...leastaways not beyond the ones I've created over the past few days. And a lot of the articles are bloated and poorly translated, and need paring, pruning and categorization. I've been trying to put some of the categorization to rights over the past week, and I may be able to do a bit more today, but I'm not sure how much time I'm going to have for it. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 13:59, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

Translating[edit]

Salve, maestro! As a result of your recent encouragement, I have added my name to several languages on your interwiki translation project. I think you already have a pretty good idea of the areas I am interested in: all aspects of culture, related biographies, history, geography... I would be happy to help out with shorter articles on a fairly regular basis but would prefer to have the opportunity of translating from scratch rather than having to edit the mess that often comes out of Google Translate. In most cases I like to go back to original sources rather than simply providing word-for-word translations of badly referenced articles from the other languages. Most of my recent articles and biographies have been written in this way even if stubs have often existed on the other wikis. As for longer articles, unless there are high priorities, I would normally like to be able to choose them myself but would appreciate guidance on what is important. In this connection, is there any index of English Wikipedia red links tied to existing articles in other languages? I would be particularly interested in links to GA or B-rated articles in the other languages. I realize I am asking a lot at this stage but would like to benefit from your expertise before embarking on such a time-consuming venture. I look forward to our continuing cooperation. - Ipigott (talk) 21:12, 24 April 2012 (UTC)

For your info, I have turned up quite a few French painters whose French bios should also be in the English wiki. See here. I'll try to cover some of the more important ones in the next few days. Then I'll move on to Danes, Germans, Spaniards, etc. - Ipigott (talk) 07:37, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

A Brahms four-hand mystery[edit]

Hi again, Dr. Blofeld--

I'm finding a small mystery, and wonder if you might have any possible suggestions. I have a CD that I'm trying to catalog: Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab MFCD-920, licensed from the Russian recording company Mezhdunarodnaya Kniga (C)&(P) 1992, of several Brahms works for four-hand piano, performed in 1975 by Viktoria Postnikova and Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

These include Op. 23, Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, for piano four-hands (1861), and Op. 39, Sixteen Waltzes for piano, four hands (1865). The mystery on this disc is the third item, variously described in two different places in the insert as, on the back cover:

  • Souvenir de la Russie. Transcriptions en forme de Fantasies sur des airs russes et bohemiens pour le piano a quatre mains (Published with op. no. 151 (sic) under the pseudonym G. W. Marks)
    • No. 2 Chansonette de Titoff ("Der Zweig") Andante - Variations I-IV
    • No. 3 Romance de Warlamoff ("In der Morgendammerung wecke sie nicht") Con moto - Thema. Allegretto - Sostenuto - Piu presto
    • No. 4 "Le Rossignol" de Alabieff ("Die Nachtingall") Andante - Allegro vivace
    • No. 5 Chant bohemien ("Ein grosses Dorf liegt auf dem Weg") Allegro moderato

and in the main insert notes, written by Victor Ledin, 1992, and edited by Marina A. Ledin, 1992, as:

  • Souvenir de la Russie. According to Max Kalbeck, the foremost biographer of Brahms, these pieces were composed shortly before the Sonata, opus 1, which dates from 1851. This composition was published by A. Cranz in Hamburg under the name of G. B. Marx, an assumed name used frequently during the 19th century. Works by several composers, including Brahms, were published under this pseudonym until 1907. Brahms refers to the name in a letter to his publisher dated February 7, 1867, in which he proposes that a simplified version of the Waltzes opus 39 be attributed to Marx.
In the first three pieces Brahms used themes by Russian composers: The Branch of the Tree by Titov, Don't Wake Her at Dawn by Varlamov and The Nightingale by Aliabiev. The last two are inspired by popular songs.
The first piece takes the form of variations. In the second, where the theme is preceded by an introduction, repeated notes imitate the sound of the balalaïka. The third, in a style which heralds the Hungarian Dances, is in two parts: the first, slow and heavy and the second, light and brilliant. The rhythm of the fourth piece could be that of a waltz, and in the fifth, the return of the theme as a canon calls to mind the Slavonic Dance in C minor, opus 46 by Dvorak.

The above text is as given, missing the appropriate diacritics and with different spellings, but with my two underscores. I'm always distrustful of information on a back cover, which is nearly always prepared by someone who has no idea what is actually on the disc. Note that although five pieces are described here, only numbers 2 through 5 are on the disc, and these don't match up with the descriptions.

In any event, none of this is listed at either List of compositions by Johannes Brahms by opus number or at List of compositions by Johannes Brahms by genre. And Wikipedia draws a blank for any combination of G. W. or G. B., Marks or Marx. Any ideas? Thanks for any help. It would seem that in any case Marx/Marks ought to be mentioned here in WP if the above note is correct about the pseudonym being frequently used. Milkunderwood (talk) 07:52, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Looks very interesting. It is possible of course that wikipedia is missing attribution. Have you asked WP:Classical music? User:Gerda Arendt might be able to help.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:09, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

Thanks - giving it a try at CM talk; Gerda is bound to find it there. (I came to you as being the designated research expert for CM mysteries.) Milkunderwood (talk) 09:49, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
It will probably work best if all responses are posted at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Classical music#Pseudonym "G. B. Marx" (or "G. H. Marks") used by Brahms rather than having a separate discussion here on Dr. Blofeld's talkpage. Milkunderwood (talk) 10:09, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure how much more can be found on Adéodat Compère-Morel and Pierre Renaudel but if they can meet the threshold, I'd 3 way 'em with Nadi; no worries if you're busy. --Rosiestep (talk) 19:31, 28 April 2012 (UTC)

Yep - not quite from my house, but you can see it from down by the river as you drive into Alexandria. Actually, you can also see it from the Metro station parking lot - it's built on a little hill, and the hotel at the Harbor is so large that it's easily visible across the river. I remember watching it being built. It was a huge deal at the time - Prince George's County has never had anything like it. I went over there once last year; it's nice. Has a ways to go, but it's filling in very well. And they're building an outlet mall next door, and the county executive is pushing the state to allow them to built a casino there, too. It's really quite incredible. --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 16:01, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Piano as well? Long time since I did my piano grades! Wish I'd learned to play to though as a kid instead of just learning pieces and doing exams!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:41, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Yeah, my problem is that I spend too much time playing Pirates of the Caribbean, Maple Leaf Rag and assorted Tom Lehrer instead of the pieces I'm meant to be practising, 1 1/2 weeks before the exam. Anyway, I'll change those citations.---Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 20:44, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

I'm a huge jazz buff, and rate the pianists Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Tommy Flanagan and Dave Brubeck especially, but Bill Evans is my favourite jazz pianist by quite a margin. Must improve the Bill Evans article some time, in fact the Bill Evans Trio should exist in its own right. I've a big fan of Chopin too, true genius. ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:50, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

I've never really played much jazz solo, though I do for the school jazz band, its all Duke Ellington and Stevie Wonder, but Chopin, yes, I've always been a fan; the Raindrop Prelude was the first or second "proper" classical piece I learned to play properly, and it's just...--Gilderien Chat|List of good deeds 20:57, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Yeah that was the first Chopin piece I learned, quite recently actually! I started learning it in D major rather than D flat ignoring the flats until I gathered the balls to learn in in the right key LOL. I was never into jazz ten years ago, or classical for that matter, it was all metal and indie with me! In fact I think I actually used to hate jazz.♦ Dr. Blofeld 21:03, 29 April 2012 (UTC)

Hio[edit]

You trying for mass production or something? I noticed the following text at the top of recent changes. "Created page with 'The '''{{subst:PAGENAME}}''' is a river of Benin.<ref>Rand McNally, ''The New International Atlas'', 1993.</ref> It flows in Maxi Territory to the north of [...')"

Subst:Pagename... I use that for my mass-production stubs.. --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 19:59, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Its faster, huh you aint seen nothing yet if you think that's mass production LOL. I'm tinkering with the idea of blasting a few thousand, yes, I'll see later in the week. I would rather the project was full of decent articles and all sourced but we are missing such an extreme amount somebody has to do the raw work..♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:08, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
'Trying for mass production'. I've now got a backlog of 11,732 .txt files in one folder, all articles to create. Time to write a bot. Which will end up not getting BAG approval and I will end up creating them manually. Anyway, it would spam up Recent Changed and New Pages... Also, when {{subst:PAGENAME}} is longer than the actual pagename, it's best not to use it. :D --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 20:25, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Are you on auto patrol? No, beause I patrolled some recently.! Shouldn't spam the new pages otherwise if they don't have to be patrolled. COntinue to create decent stubs and I'll request auto patrol for you, OK? A bot can be sorted but the number of people running them for articles is next to nobody so might be tricky finding somebody. Perhaps ask Ganeshbot's operator User talk:Ganeshk? ♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:28, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

You'd have to ask MBisanz, he let me request HighBeam. See this discussion. --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 20:36, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

MBisanz doesn't run bots regularly though to my knowledge, although he has one, but he's one of the BAG approval folks. You could approach him about the 11,000 articles you want to create and see what he says though,♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:37, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

He runs MBisanzBot. I'd make a few hundred o' them manually first (slowly, to not mess up new pages) then look into it. --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 20:40, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

"Not exactly "runs", he last ran the account in Jan 2009!♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:42, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

Okay then, more like "does not use and probably won't!" I'll try for 25 articles per day for around a month, then come back here and ask you about it (I will in the meantime). --Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 20:49, 30 April 2012 (UTC)
