  1. ^A "Canteen Catastrophe" is a rewrite of "Murder in M1", the chapter was moved from the first chapter in the second arc of the initial run to the first chapter overall. However due to a change in setting, character involvement and timeline, the chapter had to be renamed.[34][52]
  2. ^B While initally slated for 8 chapters, time and story constraints saw one of the two omitted chapters combined into another, while the second was omitted because it did nothing for the plot of the series or for the development of the characters.[15][16]

Strike the Heart[edit]

The origins of Tom’s and Geoff’s conflict were far more complex than most Protectors realise, with small insurrections that remain hidden from public view and lead to violent confrontations that tore through Zoombian ships without relent. But an extra set of eyes witnessed the conflict and actively worked from within the ranks of the Protectors, and Geoff had no idea that these eyes belonged to his daughter, Lizzy.

Once back together, the team is quickly pulled a part again as further revelations about their past and further operations into deeper parts of the Earth’s history as they track their opponents back through time, as well as encountering variations of their past that they believed long dormant.

— Official Synopsis[36]

Hunted[36][37] was announced on November 15, 2015[36] and was followed shortly by the release of the first chapter, entitled "Firestarter".[37] While inititally absent from the annoncement, Tom later tweeted to clarify that the series takes place in Universe 27.[56]

Order of the Books[edit]

The series starts with "Strike the Heart" before progressing onto "Ashes". The next book chronologically after the Protectors travel to the past is "Three Years Too Early..." and its sequels in Universe 16, followed by "A Past to Remember" and "The Future's Past", with "Covenant Invasion of Earth" picking up towards the end of "A Past to Remember" with the crossover even occurring between the first book and its sequel, "Past from the Future". "Power Core", "Time Trap" and "Fast Track" are set two years after this, with "Camp Terror" and "NCIS" two years after that. "An Abyss to Hell", the sequel to NCIS, is set immediately after "NCIS".[57][58] In August 2015, "Family Reunion" was released which acted as a small prequel to "A Past to Remember", being set in Universe 08 which is briefly featured alongside its characters in "A Past to Remember".[4] How much time has passed following the end of the series and when the characters appear in "A Past to Remember" has not been shown.

To explain the ability for the characters of various universes being able to cross over and communicate without travelling through time in either universe, Tom explained: "All of the books that are displaced are able to interact with one another as the Portal has some of the properties of the Time Machine. This means that it can't travel through time within its own time, however, it can connect to any time period in any other Universe."[57]

Universes[edit]

There are a total of 40 Universes within the fictional Multiverse that has been established in the Saga of Thomas Cane. The first of these Universes is refered to is Universe 01 and is featured heavily within "A Past to Remember" and is the main setting in "The Future's Past" and "Strike the Heart". Universes 03, 04 and 20 also appear in "A Past to Remember", although in a much smaller capacity. Universe 08 is the setting of a small portion of "A Part to Remember" and serves as a meeting point between characters from Universe 01 and Universe 18; Universe 08 is later featured in its own series, "Family Reunion", which takes place prior to it burning in "A Past to Remember". Universes 11, 12 and 13 was planned to be featured in the cancelled series "Alliance" where they would be at war with one another.

Universes 15 and 18 feature different variations of the same premise that revolves around NCIS and are featured in "Camp Terror" and "NCIS" respectively. Universe 16 is home to the "Three Years Too Early..." specials while Universe 17 is depicted in the "Covenant Invasion of Earth" series. Universe 19 is featured in a Death Note Parody that has yet to be released. Universes 29 and 31 are portrayed in "Fast Track" and "Time Trap" respectively while Universes 37 and 38 are planned to be part of a joined story that will parody "X-Men: Days of Future Past". Universe 40 is home to the "Power Core" series.

Universe 23 is set to appear in "A Past to Remember" as well as a spin-off, focusing on Naomi's time there, called "Earth 23".

Development[edit]

Regarding the blog series and how some of the plots are adapted into the main series of books, Tom explained via Twitter that he's "started twisting the plots I've used for the blog series, then adding more complex versions to the main saga."[60] While explaining the timeline between "Covenant Invasion of Earth" and "A Past to Remember", he explained the timeline of the main series of books had changed, causing "Covenant Invasion" to occur concurrently with the last sections of "A Past to Remember" rather than during the third book, "A Past that Kills".[58] On June 12, 2015, Tom announced that he would be rewriting his "NCIS" series.[31]
