The Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry (MPI-BGC) is located on the Beutenberg campus in Jena, Thuringia, Germany. The institute was founded in 1997 with the aim to study global biogeochemical cycles and their climate interactions. It is part of the German research organization Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science (Max Planck Gesellschaft zur Förderung der Wissenschaften).
The MPI for Biogeochemistry has three scientific departments headed by Max Planck directors:
- Department of Biogeochemical Processes, Director: Susan Trumbore
- Department of Biogeochemical Systems, Director: Martin Heimann
- Department of Biogeochemical Integration, Director: Markus Reichstein
- Max Planck Research Groups:
- Biospheric Theory and Modelling, headed by Axel Kleidon
- Organic Paleobiogeochemistry, headed by Christian Hallmann
- Research Groups:
- Molecular Biogeochemistry, led by Gerd Gleixner
- Emeritus Group, led by the former founding director Ernst-Detlef Schulze
