Song

"Shattered Glass" is a song recorded by American recording artist Britney Spears. The song was written by Lukasz Gottwald, Claude Kelly, Benjamin Levin, and produced by Dr. Luke, and Benny Blanco for Spears' sixth studio album, Circus (2008). "Shattered Glass" is an up-tempo teen-pop and dance song with elements of disco. Lyrically, the song speaks of flirting, betrayal, and a sense of entrapment as well as self loathing in her relationship with fame.[1][2][3]

"Shattered Glass" received generally positive reviews from music critics, with many noting its dance sound. Although the song was never released as a single, it managed to peak at number seventy on the Billboard Hot 100.

Background[edit]

The song was included as a B-side for "Unusual You."[4][5]

Composition and reception[edit]

"Shattered Glass" is an up-tempo, teen-pop and disco song with guitar rifts, jagged verses, and a melodic chorus.[6][1] Lyrically, the song speaks of flirting, betrayal, and a sense of entrapment as well as self loathing in her relationship with fame.[1][2][7] The song was written by Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, Claude Kelly, and Bejamin Levin and was produced by the first of the three along with Benny Blanco.[8]

Entertainment Weekly said that "Dr. Luke and Max Martin [were] bringing their B game" to the track.[9] The New York Times said the song and 'Womanizer' "use their pulsing electro arrangements for teen-pop tales of flirting and betrayal."[1] Popmatters, however, called the song part of the "mid-album slum", saying that "she reveals her proclivity for the same stomping, unsubtle beefiness of “Womanizer”, but there’s a notable lapse in quality."[10] Daily News said the song had "real bubblegum snap" while About.com called it a "beautiful upbeat pop tune."[11][6] IGN stated that the song came off "a bit generic", but National Post called the song a "kiss-off guitar-laden hard disco."[2]

Chart performance[edit]

Despite only being released as a B-side from the "Unusual You" single, the song managed to chart on many of the Billboard charts. Due to digital downloads from Circus the song managed to peak at number seventy on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, remaining on the chart for two weeks.[12] "Shattered Glass" was also able to chart at number fifty-seven on the pop chart and number twenty-nine on the digital songs chart.[13] It received similar reception in Canada, reaching number thirty-six on the Canadian digital songs chart.[13]
