Jude Thomas Russell (born 12 March 2002) is an English professional footballer who plays as a defender for Premier League club Brentford. He is a product of the Crystal Palace academy.

Career[edit]

Crystal Palace[edit]

Beginning his career as a midfielder, Russell entered the Crystal Palace academy in 2010.[2] He was developed into a central defender and right back and progressed into the U18 team while an U15 player.[2][3] Russell signed a professional contract at the end of the 2019–20 season and was a part of the U23 team which won the 2020–21 Premier League 2 Second Division championship,[2][4][5] but he elected to depart Selhurst Park in July 2021.[6]

Brentford[edit]

On 1 July 2021, Russell signed a one-year contract with the B team at Premier League club Brentford,[6] on a free transfer.[7] He had played on trial with the team during the latter months of the 2020–21 season.[6] The contract included a one-year option.[6] Russell made 27 appearances during the 2021–22 season and was released when his contract expired.[8]

Non-League football[edit]

Russell joined League Two club Harrogate Town trial during the 2022–23 pre-season, but did not win a contract.[9] After spending the majority of the 2022–23 season as a free agent and a spell with Beckenham Town,[10] he transferred to Isthmian League Premier Division club Herne Bay on 25 February 2023.[11] Russell made two appearances,[12] before ending the 2022–23 season with Southern Counties East League Premier Division club Erith & Belvedere.[13] Following promotion to the Isthmian League South East Division,[14] he was retained for the 2023–24 season.[15]

Style of play[edit]

Russell has been described as "comfortable on the ball, quick and agile while also tall, links defence and attack almost seamlessly and offers plenty going forward".[3]

Personal life[edit]

Russell is a Crystal Palace supporter and attended Whitgift School.[3]
