Giovanni Donald McGregor (born 9 January 1999) is an English semi-professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for Southern League Premier Division Central club Bishop's Stortford.

McGregor is a product of the Brentford and Crystal Palace academies and began his senior career in non-League football with Dulwich Hamlet in 2022. He transferred to Wealdstone in 2022.

Career[edit]

Brentford[edit]

A midfielder, McGregor began his career in the academy at Brentford and was a part of the U15 team which won the Junior Globe at the 2014 Milk Cup.[3][4] He progressed to make four appearances for the youth team during the 2014–15 season and signed a scholarship deal at the end of the campaign.[5][6] McGregor made 18 appearances and scored one goal during the 2015–16 season.[7] Despite being one year into his two-year scholarship, McGregor was released in June 2016 after the Brentford academy was closed.[8]

Crystal Palace[edit]

After a trial period, McGregor joined the Development Squad at Premier League club Crystal Palace on 12 August 2016.[9][10] He made a combination of 29 appearances for the Development and U18 teams during the 2016–17 season, scoring two goals.[9] McGregor signed a new one-year contract during the 2018 off-season and received his maiden call into the first team squad for an EFL Cup second round match versus Swansea City on 28 August 2018.[11][12] He remained an unused substitute during the 1–0 victory.[12]

McGregor signed a new one-year contract at the end of the 2018–19 season and captained the U23 team during the first half of the 2019–20 season.[13][14] He was an unused substitute during three first team matches during January 2020,[12] before joining National League South club Dartford on loan until the end of the 2019–20 season.[15] He made two appearances before the COVID-19 pandemic led to the curtailment of the regular season.[12] Despite being eligible, McGregor was not included in any of the Darts' National League South playoff squads.[12] In June 2020, it was announced that McGregor had been offered a new contract,[16] but he elected to depart Selhurst Park in October 2020.[17]

Dulwich Hamlet[edit]

After failing trials with Shelbourne and Sheffield Wednesday,[18][19] McGregor joined National League South club Dulwich Hamlet in October 2020.[17] Prior the 2020–21 National League South season being declared null and void in February 2021,[20] McGregor had made 11 appearances and scored one goal.[21] He was retained for 2021–22 and made 36 appearances,[22] scoring four goals,[23] during a mid-table season.[24] McGregor made 47 appearances and scored five goals during two seasons at Champion Hill.[21][23]

Wealdstone[edit]

On 23 September 2022, McGregor signed a two-year contract with National League club Wealdstone,[25] for a fee settled by tribunal.[26] He made 14 appearances during the 2022–23 season, before joining National League South club Chelmsford City on a 28-day loan on 10 March 2023.[26] He made 9 appearances and scored two goals during his spell,[12] which ended with defeat in the National League South playoff quarter-finals.[27] After failing to appear during the opening month of the 2023–24 season,[12] McGregor had his contract terminated on 16 September 2023.[28]

Bishop's Stortford[edit]

On 22 September 2023, McGregor joined National League North club Bishop's Stortford on a free transfer.[29] He made 32 appearances and scored three goals during a 2023–24 season which culminated in relegation to the Isthmian League Premier Division.[12][30]
