Der Neue Pauly is an encyclopedia in German for antiquity. It was the second attempt to create a reference work that was supposed to be as good as the 84-volume Real-encyclopädie der classischen Altertumswissenschaft (1893-1983), the standard work at the time, also called Pauly or Pauly-Wissowa for short.[1][2]
The first attempt was Der Kleine Pauly, which attempted to renew the original Pauly. It was soon decided that a completely new work was needed and proceeded to write Der Neue Pauly. This was more successful than its predecessor and is the new reference work for many things. [citation needed]
A similar encyclopedia, but consisting of only one volume, is the Oxford Classical Dictionary.
