The Fisheries Act (An Act respecting fisheries) (the Act) is the act of the Parliament of Canada that governs the commercial and indigenous (where an agreement exists) harvesting of fish species and the management of fish habitat within the national waters of Canada. First passed in 1868, the Act has been amended many times. The Act is administered by the Fisheries and Oceans Canada division of the Government of Canada.

History[edit]

The Fisheries Act is one of the oldest acts of the Parliament of Canada, first passed in 1868.[1] In 1868, the Parliament passed two acts respecting the fishery: The Fisheries Act, (long title An Act for the Regulation of Fishing and the Protection of Fisheries) and An Act respecting fishing by Foreign Vessels.[2]
