ITC Project/With thanks![edit]

I, Howard Berry, would like to take this opportunity to award you this Working Man's Barnstar, as a thanks for singing up to the ITC Entertainment project and for all the very prompt infobox edits you've made.

Thank you! HowardBerry 20:38, 11 November 2005 (UTC)

Johnny Carson show[edit]

Hi 23skidoo,

I've noticed your edits to the Tonight Show and David Letterman articles. They're good edits and are much appreciated. I do have a question about one, though--in the "Anecdotes and trivia" section of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, you added that sometimes Carson would swear and the audience at home would hear gibberish. On "The Johnny Carson Collection" DVD set, one of the extra features says that it was the other way around; that Carson would say something like "oh, fiddlesticks" and the studio would "censor" the word to make it seem to home viewers as if Carson had actually sworn, adding to the comedic effect.

I'm not trying to poke holes in your edits, which add much to the articles, but do you happen to have a source on this particular entry? If so, I'd very much like to see it. I'm a researcher working on the late night talk shows, and things like this that seem like trivia are very interesting to me.

Thanks in advance,

Telestylo 07:36, 12 November 2005 (UTC)

Hello again, 23skidoo,
Thanks for your quick reply, and sorry that I couldn't get back to you sooner. Your response is fascinating to me--I wish I had access to such a large archive of taped shows. It would be a veritable treasure trove of research material :)
Since both ways of censoring and "censoring" seem to have occurred on the show, how do you propose that we add this to the article? It seems strange to add the opposite of a point to an already existing point.
Thanks again, Telestylo 07:17, 22 November 2005 (UTC)

Page Redesign[edit]

I, Mollsmolyneux, have redesigned the List of incomplete Doctor Who serials page. To view it please Click Here. Please leave any comments you have about the page on My Talk Page and tell me if you think I should put the page on. -- Mollsmolyneux 12:51, 12 Nov 2005 (UTC)

What do you think?[edit]

I have chnaged my List of incomplete Doctor Who serials redesign to three different tables which are all now prettytables. Can you please leave a comment on My Talk Page and tell me if I should put the page up. -- Mollsmolyneux 09:31, 13 Nov 2005 (UTC)

Alias template[edit]

Well they were always in alphabetical order. I only kept it that way because it was easier. Feel free to make any changes you want. K1Bond007 01:47, 14 November 2005 (UTC)

Anon insanity[edit]

Yes, I'm familiar with this anon and their crazy edits.

Let me guess the sorts of things that they said -- "Russian gays Mikkalai and Node"... "16 years old kid Node"... "Anti-romanian anti-semit russian gays vandal"...?

For the record, I am gay, and I am 16, but I'm not Russian, nor do I think it's fair to label me as anti-Romanian, anti-Semitic, or a vandal.

Ahh, and I have a very strong suspicion that this is indeed the work of a registered user hiding behind an IP address. What is the proper procedure for finding this out?

Vandalism etc[edit]

Nope, not really. Seems business as usual for me. Thank God for the rollback :) I've noticed you don't use it - probably because you don't know what it is. When you come across vandalism or edits that you feel don't deserve a "I reverted because", just hit the rollback button (found on the diff page when viewing differences between edits). It'll automically rollback to the last edit by the last editor (even if the editor edited the page multiple times). Makes life simpler. Also don't be afraid to block someone for more than an hour :) Heh. Go for 24. Check their contributions and discussion pages and if it seems it isn't an IP used by multiple IPs (these are usually noted with a template) just go for 24. If you're wrong and it is, trust me you'll be informed. One night I blocked an IP for 24 hours - woke up the next day and had like 6 emails from different people asking to be unblocked :D. It's no big deal. K1Bond007 03:21, 16 November 2005 (UTC)

IMHO any registered user that vandalises a user page should be indefinitely blocked. I was going to do it to that guy (would have been my first time for indefinite), but someone beat me to it. Check out User:K1Bond007/monobook.js. Copy the source and put it on your own namespace User:23skidoo/monobook.js. What this will do is add two more tabs to the top of your page (only appears on user pages). Gives you quick access to block someone and check the log for that user (to see if they've been blocked already or in the past etc). Try it out. If you don't like it, just delete that page of yours as speedy. Theres other features that you can add with the monobook thing, but I've yet to really look into them. Mozilla Firefox :) K1Bond007 05:50, 16 November 2005 (UTC)
No, obviously theres really nothing you can do but rollback and block the users. If a page is consistantly vandalised in a given day by multiple IPs etc, you can protect the page for a while. See the how-to guide for what you can and cannot do. K1Bond007 23:07, 17 November 2005 (UTC)

Do you think .........[edit]

Do you think that DC Comics has Ares carrying out vengeance ? Seen a JLA 2000 episode in which he tried to start a war in Europe. Wonder Woman stopped him, he swore vengeance. Is this it ? What of the other inquiries, such as,will WW's people seek vengeance, will innocents who accidentally land on whats left of Paradise Island end up being killed ?Martial Law 07:06, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Ares is the Greek god of war and is portrayed as a evil entity in the WW comics, thus my assumptions that he may have a lot to do with what is going on.Martial Law 20:13, 18 November 2005 (UTC) :)

Naming lists[edit]

Since you asked on AFD, here's the link to naming policy on lists.

Please cite such a policy if there is one. As it stands now, and this is a problem I have with many lists, the criteria based upon the name is too vast. 23skidoo 00:59, 19 November 2005 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Lists. - Mgm|(talk) 17:09, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Usually strict criteria are included in the lead of the article. If not, feel free to fix that. Adding words like famous, prominent or such things, only make the title longer when really lists should contain notable people anyway. I hope that helps. - Mgm|(talk) 17:12, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Unblocked[edit]

Hi,

  • First, thank you for unblocking me
  • Second, I cannot change my IP address, since I rent my appartment and share the connection with seven other persons.
  • I thought blocking usually is 24 hours.

Have a nice day! Reply to David Latapie 19:25, 19 November 2005 (UTC)

Re: Slashdotting[edit]

I noticed you have added a "slashdotting tag" to The Prisoner. What does it signify? And shouldn't it be on the talk page? Should it be something to be concerned about? (Please reply on my talk page.) Cheers.23skidoo 01:08, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

It signifies that the page was mentioned on a high traffic site and is likely to get an increased amount of vandalism. In this case, the site was Slashdot [2]. It's actually the first time I've used the tag, but I believe it's supposed to be used on the article rather than the talk page. Similar to the current events tag. If I made a mistake, I'm sure somebody will correct it. --GraemeL (talk) 01:16, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Movie to .........[edit]

Will the upcomming movie Wonder Woman initiate a new series, and is this movie another "retcon" of this character ? The last time WW was on TV., the ratings were beyond expectation in the positive direction. One other thing, how do I tell someone a joke with out being accused of vandalisim ? Martial Law 20:06, 20 November 2005 (UTC)

Got your response. Hope the movie is'nt a disaster, due to this guy. I've already seen one WW movie depicting the I Ching Era WW. Maybe, he'll make it like Xena, Warrior Princess, and I've seen this series as well. I bet that one of the Hawaiian Islands may be selected to be the setting for the Paradise Island location shoot. When it comes time to make the movie, keep a eye on the tabloids, such as the National Enquirer and The Star. They'll have all kinds of things in them. When will shooting start ?Martial Law 22:40, 21 November 2005 (UTC)

3RR[edit]

People should note that in the comment below, TheDoctor10 has written the word "don't"(commented out) in front of "apologize", bringing into question the sincerity of his remarks below. PaulHammond 14:45, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

I apologise for having broken the 3RR, however, if I do take care not to violate it again, I shall continue to revert it. I can revert up to 3 times w/in that period, and shall continue to do so.--TheDoctor10 (talk|email) 17:20, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

I've checked the laws, and, without it being a legal threat, you are not within your rights to ban or block me. I live in and edit from the UK, where I am governed by the Computer Misuse Act 1990. Section 3 states that I am guilty of illegal modification to data on a computer (ie the editing of WP pages) if I:
    • Don't have permission (the fact it is a Wiki is permission)
    • I deliberately modify data (not necessarily to cause disruption, just as long as it's different before and after I process it)
    • I know that it's illegal.
Now, WP's blocking policy effectively says "we will withdraw our permission for you to modify data on our servers if..." Since I have not violated those rules, I cannot be blocked. Yours with no respect whatsoever,--TheDoctor10 (talk|email) 17:29, 23 November 2005 (UTC)
You are so wrong. Let me tell you again what everyone has been telling you. 3RR is not an entitlement. You are blocked for 24 hours for 3RR and for disruption and for incivility. Revert again against consensus, the blocks will increase. You are very welcome - and I implore you - to make your complaints to the Wikimedia Foundation. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 17:46, 23 November 2005 (UTC)

Yeah, that was the first time he was edit warring over a speculative statement in List of minor Doctor Who villains and The End of the World (Doctor Who), so he can't claim ignorance of 3RR or what it means to game the system. It's no longer a matter of 3RR, IMO. The constant reversion over things that have already been decided against by consensus is disruptive. It's time for an RfC. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 04:48, 24 November 2005 (UTC)

meta-discussion[edit]

I notice you mentioned the stuff going on about TheDoctor10's insincere apology above. To be fair to the guy, my comment about his <!--don't--> above happened *after* I tried to unhide it out of his original - so I did fiddle with his comment before he fiddled with mine. I wrote my own comment when he reverted, insisting on his right to make his apologies insincere by putting hidden negation comments in them. The rule on not editing other's comments is not hard and fast - but usually refactoring is meant to be done to fairly summarize the points made in a long discussion, or to edit out personal attacks to help people to cool down. His behaviour here offers another example of his general pettiness and is equally irritating - I hope it gets quoted on the RfC. PaulHammond 17:50, 26 November 2005 (UTC) (note: found this while looking for a link to refactoring guidelines)

btw - I was made aware of this hidden comment when TheDoctor10 came back here to hide it again. Khaosworks noticed it first [3]. PaulHammond 11:57, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

What RfC is this, anyway?--TheDoctor10 (talk|email) 19:06, 25 November 2005 (UTC)

No, when I said what is the RfC I meant why are you jabbering about it, when one hasn't been filed? I know what an RfC is.--TheDoctor10 (talk|email) 07:26, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Alias[edit]

I'm really not that upset about it. I haven't 'really' enjoyed the show since the third season. I don't like the slower/episodic pace the show took on for the fourth and even fifth season, although admittingly the fifth season has been a big improvement over the fourth. I just hope they solve the entire Rambaldi plotline without destroying the show (i.e. without it being completely lame). I'm satisfied anyway. Was a great show. What I'd really like is another Mission Impossible (TV show, not the films) type show. Alias was the closest I've seen, which is why I really enjoyed the show. Very Mission Impossible meets James Bond with a quick pace. K1Bond007 04:49, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

TheDoctor10[edit]

I am preparing an RFC against User:TheDoctor10 for speculation, revert warring and personal attacks. Would you please review the draft User:TimPope/Requests for Comment/TheDoctor10 and leave any comments on my talk page if you would be prepared to endorse if I should list it formally at WP:RFC. I would also be grateful for any additional examples of any attempts you have made to resolve the dispute.

Thanks! --TimPope 10:32, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

I couldn't find his personal attack on you, but I remember him calling you a buffoon or lunatic. I have listed the RFC properly (Wikipedia:Requests for comment/TheDoctor10), so maybe if you want to endorse you could add the diff. --TimPope 17:34, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Sexual Slang confrontation[edit]

Even though the AfD vote on sexual slang (formerly "List of sexual slang") was to keep, the opposition (User:The Literate Engineer and User:Voice of All(MTG)) deleted it anyways (though it was still in the history). I've written a long letter pointing out their bogus plan, revealing them for the frauds they are. I've taken the bold move of reverting the list to BEFORE they started their hack job on it (Nov 15). If you want that list retained, you better get over there and help with the reversion war that is likely to result. I can't do it alone. Bend over 17:09, 26 November 2005 (UTC)

Rose Tyler[edit]

It's an example of edit warring and gaming the 3RR system, although he didn't really break 3RR on that one. I've added it. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 00:16, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

See gaming the system. Basically, it's trying to squeeze into a technicality in policy while at the same time defying the spirit of it. --khaosworks (talkcontribs) 05:37, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

The assault on the List of sexual slang[edit]

Two users in particular The Literate Engineer & Voice of All(MTG) have apparently made it their duty to get rid of the list and they have been using underhanded tactics in an attempt to do so in any way they can.

But word is getting out, and supporters of the list are starting to rally against them and protect the list (via rerverting vandalism, countering their tactics, etc.).

The results of the 18 October AfD:[edit]

  • Keep & clean = 3
  • Keep, no clean = 11
  • Delete = 2

The anonymous clean-up notice[edit]

The following anonymous clean-up notice was posted to the list on November 1st:

23:44, 1 November 2005 68.17.227.41

The notice was placed without group consensus, and there was no edit comment. Pretty sneaky.

This was the user's only edit. Nothing before or after. A sock-puppet.

The results of the 10 November Afd[edit]

  • Keep & clean up =3 votes
  • Keep, with no mention of clean up =7 votes
  • Delete = 4 votes (including the nomination)

That's 10 votes to keep, out of which 3 voted to clean up. Seven out of ten clearly voiced their desire to retain the list without deleting its entries.

Dishonest report of Afd results[edit]

Voice of All(MTG) reported the results as " ", and he and The Literate Engineer used that as the basis to erase the content of the list, which they did in successive edits.

Non-consensual list move[edit]

During the 10 November AfD discussion, Voice of All(MTG) moved the list to the new article name sexual slang, citing the introduction at the top of the list as the basis for the move ("it is more than a list"). Several users then used the article title as an argument against including any list entries.

When an article is moved, the change history is moved with it, and a redirect is placed under the original article's title. If the redirect is edited, then the article cannot be moved back. That is exactly what has happened to the list. See Wikipedia:Merging and moving pages for more information.

The current situation[edit]

The change history of the list is currently stranded as the change history of Sexual slang.

The content of the list itself has been restored to List of sexual slang, where it was originally. This preserves the spirit of the results of the two AfD discussions mentioned above.

To summarize:[edit]

  1. On Oct 18 the list was nominated for AfD (article for deletion), but this attempt to delete failed, and the vote was overwhelmingly to Keep.
  2. An anonymous sock-puppet placed a clean-up notice on the list. It has been used as a justification to delete entries.
  3. On Nov 10, The Literate Engineer made an AfD attempt against the list and it failed too.
  4. Then Voice of All(MTG) underhandedly moved the list to the non-list name sexual slang, while the AfD was still underway.
  5. Voice of All(MTG)reported false results for the 10 November AfD vote, and he and The Literate Engineer edited out the entire list.
  6. I posted a rebuttal to the above antics on the talk page for sexual slang, and reverted the sexual slang article to the November 15 version in the article's change history (the complete list). My username ("Bend over") was banned as inappropriate or offensive.
  7. Some editors stated that an article is not the place for a list, and used that as a justification to keep list entries.
  8. So I replaced the redirect at List of sexual slang with the actual content of the entire list. Unfortunately, the change history for the list is still part of the change history for the article sexual slang.
  9. An attempt is being made to protect the list against vandalism at its original location: List of sexual slang.

Remember, the three reversion limit does not apply when reverting vandalism. Only if enough concerned users participate will this be successful.

Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. Red Rover 22:07, 27 November 2005 (UTC)

Block question[edit]

Dear User talk:23skidoo,

I don't know who to contact, but I read that you are one of the administrators. I have been recently told that I am no longer allowed to post in Wikipedia because I have been vandalising the website. The only section that I have been posting to is the ISKCON website. I have been adding links concerning child abuse and other corrupt activities by this organizations. All the links that I have included are active links. I have in no time deleted anyone's posts-I only added my own. At times some of my links have been removed though. I would like to find out why I am been told that I am vandilising this website. Please, can you lead me to the right person who I need to contact. I am a current Hare Krishna (ISKCON) member and in my institution, free speech is virtually unheard of. I was hoping that the outside world would be able to see the different aspects of this movement. I am used to people getting ban in my institution for speaking up, but I didn't think this would apply in this website. I would very much appreciate if someone would let me know what I have been doing wrong?

Sincerely, Miriam Galarza (aka Bhaktin Miriam in the Hare Krishna Movement)

When I saw he was a regular contributor I unblocked him three minutes later. If he wants to whine, well, fine; he really shouldn't be wasting our time vandalising. Thanks, ol' buddy. That squirrel had ample chance to straighten up and fly right and didn't. Maybe this "no anon new pages" rule isn't so bad after all! - Lucky 6.9 02:46, 9 December 2005 (UTC)
