Armond Arabshahi, known by his stage name Unlike Pluto, is a Persian American singer, songwriter, record producer, and former DJ. [1] The name Unlike Pluto developed from nothing and has no real meaning; it is something that he just came up with and thought sounded cool, so he stuck with it. He is known for his Pluto Tapes series of volumes, a project he started as creative outlet where he challenges himself to release one song per week starting from May 2018.[2] In his words, "The Pluto Tapes started as an experiment for me to release more music - I wanted to see what it would be like to release a song every week. I start a new song idea every day. A lot of those don't even make the cut, but it gets my creativity flowing. The Pluto Tapes have now become my outlet to push my creative boundaries and challenge myself." He is also known for his massively, most popular song "Everything Black" who he produced with Mike Taylor's vocals. It has achieved Gold in Canada and recently in the US, and even plays in the popular multiplayer competitive car soccer game Rocket League. Besides his Unlike Pluto project, he has a side project called Why Mona, a name based off of his sister's name, Mona, with Hamilton singer and one of his best friend's, Joanna Jones. Together, they create covers of old school classics with her singing and his production.[3] His other side project is Like Saturn where he produces chill, Lofi style instrumentals for fun and from his love of the Lofi genre, and similar to the Pluto Tapes, he releases a new song every week. [4]

Career[edit]

Originally from Atlanta and based in Los Angeles, Arabshahi describes his style of music as alternative rock.

Arabshahi started out small doing EDM, doing songs with many different kinds of singers before he even revealed his voice. He has performed at various music festivals, including Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and Euphoria Music Festival.[5] In 2017 he also hosted a tour promoting his huge, gold record [6] single, "Everything Black".[7]

Before he broke away from the Heroic label in 2019 and went independent as a musician, Arabshahi released an EP named Life in Minor (November 2019) and the third volume of Pluto Tapes came to a close, away from the Electronic/EDM light and more into various genres/styles like alternative, indie, pop, electronic rock, and rock. Because of the success of Pluto Tapes though, he didn't stop releasing weekly, and began repackaging the weekly releases into various albums over the course of 2020-2023, not under Pluto Tapes. He made the albums Messy Mind (August 2020), Technicolor Daydream (April 2021), Loud Fantasy, Quiet Reality (November 2021), Pixelated Oblivion (May 2022), Cherry Blossom Nightmare (November 2022), Dizzy Bezerko (August 2023), and another currently unnamed album in progress as of 2024.

By 2023, during and after his fifth album "Cherry Blossom Nightmare", he eventually found a solid place in alternative/alternative rock, instead of doing different kinds of songs each release, and lessened the frequency of releases to every other week and eventually every month. Pluto Tapes did not end permanently however, as in November 2023, in the midst of him releasing the songs for his upcoming album in 2024, he announced the projects return in the release of a new Pluto Tape only on Youtube.[8] Currently, alongside the new weekly Pluto Tape releases only on Youtube, which will be packaged into the fourth volume and then released on all platforms in mid 2024, he continues to release more songs every month that will be repackaged into one of the two new albums he has planned in 2024, another special collaboration album that is yet to be revealed. Armond has also announced his new manga, called Dada Immortal, inspired by his newfound love for Japanese anime and manga. [9]

Why Mona[edit]

In 2017, Arabshahi announced a new side project called Why Mona with Hamilton singer Joanna Jones. The pair released a cover of Queen's "We Will Rock You" the same day.[3] Why Mona combines rock and electronic music to create covers of old school classics. In contrast to Unlike Pluto's electronic driven production, Joanna hails from Broadway where she's currently starring in the roles of Maria Reynolds and Peggy Schuyler in the critically acclaimed Broadway hit musical Hamilton.[10] In early 2019, the duo's cover of "Wannabe" by Spice Girls went viral on TikTok amassing over 10 million unique video creations by users on the platform.[11] In 2021 Dell computers released an ad that featured their track "Rabbit Hole" which introduced a lot of viewers to this song and group.[12]

Like Saturn

In 2020, Arabshahi began another side project called Like Saturn, a name that plays off of his stage name, derived from his love of the lofi genre where he makes his own version of chill, emotional lofi. The songs require low effort, are fun to make, and another way for him to create freely. He does weekly releases with this project as well, and continues to do so into 2024. [13]
