Unofficial world championships?[edit]

On what basis are the earlier ones designated as "Unofficial world championships"? What is the reliable source for such a designation? --David Biddulph (talk) 04:36, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I read this in a German (WP) rowing bio. I take it that it's incorrect? Schwede66,
Incorrect as far as I know, and http://www.worldrowing.com/events/1974-lightweight-championships/lightweight-mens-single-sculls/ makes no mention of it being unofficial. Did the German WP page cite a reliable source for the statement? --David Biddulph (talk) 09:39, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've had another look and found the article again, and it uses this reference. It says on the linked page at the bottom (translated from German): "Note: From 1974 to 1984 FISA championships or unofficial world championships; from 1985 official world championships" Reading the 'about' page, it's clear that it doesn't strictly meet the RS threshold (due to lack of editorial oversight), but may well come under the exceptions that are permissible. Hunting around on the German WP, I see that their rowing portal lists that website amongst the "high quality weblinks". So, what do we do? I'm easy. If you lean towards removing the info, we'll take it out. Schwede66 18:36, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The Australians have a good rowing history website and on this page, it states the following (with emphasis added by me):

World Championships for lightweight men and women were first conducted in 1985 and have been held annually since then. FISA Championships were held annually for lightweight men from 1974 to 1984.
