Generate prep id[edit]

Is it possible to generate the prep id based on inputs of collvol and collvolpages? Because there is a relation on the prep "cvxpxxx" --Rifleman 82 16:58, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

"I don't know" is my honest reply—you´d have to ask at Orgsyn (or do a few experiments). I'm not sure why you'd want to do this either—surely you need to check the site to make sure you have the correct bibliographical data, and so you know the prep id, no? At least, that was my conception when I made the template. Physchim62 (talk) 17:29, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've observed quite a few prep ids, and I have not noticed any deviations: the format of the prep is CVXPYYYY where X is the collected volume number (1 digit), and YYYY is the page number of the collected volume (3 digits).
Thus, if we can generate the url automatically from the collected volume number and the page number, without having 2 or 3 digit page numbers breaking the template, it would be great! I know enough about computers to know that this is quite possible but not enough to do the boolean thing for 2 or 3 digit numbers. Would you be able to?
My rationale is quite simple. Templates are meant to reduce the amount of mundane typing required. I see the collvol and collvolpages, compared with the prep, as duplicate information which is hand-typed. If this could be avoided, it would be an even better template. Flip it around. Is it possible ot enter the prep *only*, and to display the collvol and collvolpages automatically? --Rifleman 82 17:40, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I see you point now :) Again, my honest reply is "I don't know"! Well, I know how to do it in several programming languages but I don't know how to do it in MediaWiki (or, more to the point, if it's even possible in MediaWiki). I'll see if I can find out, but no promises! Physchim62 (talk) 17:46, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's great! Thanks! --Rifleman 82 17:52, 27 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Physchim. I found a citation template: {{Cite court}}. Perhaps you can find some inspiration there. I tried to fix it myself but I got lost in a forst of curly braces. In particular, you can have something like:

For a U.S. Supreme Court case, the URL to a Findlaw page is http://caselaw.lp.findlaw.com/scripts/getcase.pl?navby=CASE&court=US&vol={{{vol}}}&page={{{page}}}

So, ours can be something like, [http://www.orgsyn.org/orgsyn/orgsyn/prepContent.asp?prep=CV{{{collvol}}}P{{{collvolpages}}}]

Hope this helps. --Rifleman 82 04:27, 6 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed the line breaking problem in [1]. --Rifleman 82 12:20, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
