Scope[edit]

The artists listed on this template are only a very small sampling of the contemporary North American indigenous artists who have articles on Wikipedia (see List of indigenous artists of the Americas), and these numbers will only increase. The template does nothing that a category couldn't do. -Uyvsdi (talk) 08:09, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]

I know. I intend on breaking it down in a different manner upon gathering enough artists for it. I was actually advised by Wiki GLAM folks to create a template for them. Missvain (talk) 15:49, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I see you are refining the Native American artists categories; that seems to be a better way to organize the artists' articles. There's already dozens of, if not over a hundred, contemporary Native US/Canadian artists with Wikipedia articles. The template, if it actually does cover all contemporary Native artists, would grow far too large to be useful. If you do want to use this template, perhaps make the scope smaller? For instance, Eiteljorg Fellowship winners, Indigenous American performances artists, etc. BTW you have excluded Inuit, Iñupiat, Alutiiq, Cup'ik/Yup'ik, Métis, and Mestizo artists by your terminology. If the template isn't adding anything that categories can't do, then categories are preferable. -Uyvsdi (talk) 22:56, 11 March 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdie[reply]
Thanks so much, I've already thought long and hard about everything you've mentioned, so it's great to know we're on the same page. Categories are great, but, templates are eyecatching and make things seem a bit more well-attended, IMHO. It will become more detailed with a better break down, it just takes me more than 24 hours to make it happen. :) Missvain (talk) 16:24, 12 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Please, please, please rethink this new step. Why are American Indian and First Nations artists being singled out and Inuit, Métis, etc. ignored? Why are indigenous artists from Greenland and Mexico left out of "North America"? What is this template going to achieve? The categories won't coincide with the description since 19th century artists active before 1860s are not "modern". If the goal is to provide easy access to Native artists by genre, then List of Native American artists, which gets a large amount of daily traffic, could use a lot of work, and List of First Nation artists doesn't even exist yet. If you wanted to create a List of Native American artists by century or something of that sort, that be cool too. -23:54, 12 March 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi
As I stated it takes more than 24 hours to make a concise project come together. Hence one reason why Métis, Inuit, Mexico, etc, have not been touched. I cannot sit around and Wikipedia all day along, especially since I am on vacation, away from my own home and regular "site of inspiration". I do really enjoy the lists that have been created, and will most likely be contributing to making articles related to a number of the artists listed, and focus on things that are a bit more pertinent towards a lecture I will be presenting at a conference in a few months, regarding, Wikipedia and Indigenous communities. This template will be a part of that, and again, has been encouraged by Wikipedians in the culture sectors. Not only does it provide a more appealing way of driving traffic towards subject matter than just a "see also" or a category at the bottom of a page, but, it gives a fullness and roundness to a project. I am going to revamp this template to be more general toward Indigenous artworks. I have a feeling you might not ever be happy with anything I do here, despite having adequate and ongoing education, relationships with a number of these artists and scholars, as well as a full-time career and educational role that provides me everyday access to these topics. I have said that I appreciate what you have done with the Indigenous project, so, I do hope you will let me tweak out my contributions and be patient. Best, Missvain (talk) 15:32, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Trust me, I'm asking you to slow down, not hurry up! It'd be good plan out the template and scope before generating a colossal amount of categories that may or may not ever be well populated. You could even draft up the list of categories that you want on your user space before actually creating them. Regarding me being happy, I *greatly* appreciate the new articles you've created. The only problems I have are grammatical and that "traditional" and "contemporary" are far too contested terms to use to divide categories. I'm very relieved you have abandoned those terms as categorization tools. Cheers, -Uyvsdi (talk) 19:56, 14 March 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]

tfd/redirect[edit]

I took the liberty of redirecting this template to a template that the same user created that is finished and used on articles. The user who created this template nominated it for deletion, and I'm not sure people were aware of the other finished template. If the redirect won't work, I can go back and propose deletion for a second time. -Uyvsdi (talk) 13:49, 1 April 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi[reply]
