code reduction[edit]

  • "you have copy-pasted this from Template:helpme without much thought about what is needed for this template. i suggest we start from the basics and then add new features if they prove useful."

I'm not sure why you'd assume such a thing. Yes I did copy the helpme code as a baseline, but I looked over all the features and found them, for the most part, to be of just as much use for this template's purpose. The alternate template in case it's posted in the wrong namespace is still useful; the reminder to replace the template call once an issue is resolved is also still useful, as much as it is for the helpme tag.

I did leave out the anchor template and IRC notice, though, since there's not much use for those yet. If you have specific arguments for why those other helpme features wouldn't also be just as useful here, let me know. Equazcion (talk) 10:01, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Somewhat surprised that you decided to edit war over this issue. I'm not going to push this, but it is generally not a good idea to copy a template wholesale into a different situation without careful thought and consideration. It was fairly obvious what you'd done because you'd left some of the references to helpme in! Most talk page notices do not include special code for different namespaces because it is not considered necessary. Unless we find that this template is being frequently misused, we should not add it here either. Also I made several other changes, which you have reverted. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:09, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Right back atcha. You were bold, I reverted. What's supposed to come next again? This wasn't a straight revert, though. I noticed that you removed the IRC notice and anchor template, and left those out. You were right about some leftover helpme references -- and I realize it was "obvious what I'd done", if you mean the code copying, as I wasn't exactly trying to hide it -- but just because I missed some textual references to the old template doesn't mean I didn't carefully consider the actual features I was carrying over. I don't see the need to wait and see if the template gets posted in the wrong namespace, since we already know the helpme template warranted guarding against that; this one isn't all that dissimilar in purpose or in the type of editor likely to use it, and I think we can expect roughly the same issues. Name[edit]

The proposal on the WP:VPPR was for a template to call for technical help to a page. I think the name of the template should better reflect that rather than a generic "attention requested". — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:10, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"experienced or tech-savvy", my emphasis. I'm not sure why we should limit this to technical help, though I saw that suggested at VPR. I'm not convinced that's necessary. Equazcion (talk) 10:19, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

For general help[edit]

I have twice removed the silly message at the bottom "For general help with templates, see Wikipedia:Template messages. (This note will not appear on tagged pages)" and you have twice replaced it. This doesn't make much sense and even if it did it should be in the documentation page and not there. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:12, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I removed it. Thank you for alerting me to having overlooked this. Equazcion (talk) 10:20, 10 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
