Template:ISFDB series/doc

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Usage[edit]

The ISFDB series template message is usually placed in the External links or References section of a speculative fiction series' Wikipedia article to link it to that series' bibliography on the Internet Speculative Fiction Database (ISFDB). The template is intended to inform people that a detailed bibliography is available on ISFDB as a support reference for the article.

If the ISFDB article title exactly matches the series name on ISFDB then you can use just {{ISFDB series}} to link to the series record on ISFDB. However, it is more reliable to reference the series using its record number. The record number is available at the end of the URL for a series on ISFDB. For example, the Elemental Masters series is on ISFDB at http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?12000. The record number in this case is 12000 meaning you would use either {{ISFDB series|id=12000}} or {{ISFDB series|12000}} to link to that series record from that Wikipedia article.

By default the series name used in the link to ISFDB is taken from the Wikipedia article's title. If the article title is not suitable then use the template with the title parameter. For example, to use the template on the Dark Matter (series) article you would use {{ISFDB series|id=17771|title=Dark Matter}} or {{ISFDB series|17771|Dark Matter}}.

Please be aware that if you don't specify the title when using the template and the Wikipedia article is later moved, usually for disambiguation, that the displayed name for the link will change. Thus, while it is convenient, it should not be used unless the odds are low that the series' Wikipedia article will be moved.

Examples[edit]

Link to the series bibliography on ISFDB for Ursula K. Le Guin's Earthsea series. This will work on all Wikipedia pages and is the recommended form.

* {{ISFDB series|id=4220|title=Earthsea}}

which displays as

and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?4220.

Link to the series bibliography on ISFDB for the The Spiderwick Chronicles series article. In this example, the link title is taken from the Wikipedia article's name and it does not exactly match the series name used on ISFDB which is "Spiderwick Chronicles" without the leading "The." This is ok as the linking is done using the series' record number.

* {{ISFDB series|id=11269}}

which displays as

and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?11269.

Link using the series name on ISFDB. This form will work from any Wikipedia article but is not recommended as the link will break if the series name is changed on ISFDB.

* {{ISFDB series|title=Earthsea Cycle}}

which displays as

and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?Earthsea_Cycle.

Link where the connected Wikidata item has a P1235 statement or the Wikipedia article title exactly matches the title used ISFDB. For example, Elemental Masters. If the Wikidata statement is set, the id number will be picked up automatically. (The Wikipedia form is not recommended as the link will break if the article is moved or the series name is changed on ISFDB.)

* {{ISFDB series}}

which displays as

and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/pe.cgi?Elemental_Masters.
