Private Apartments of the Winter Palace[edit]

Bedroom of Maria Alexandrovna

Created by Giano (talk). Nominated by Gerda Arendt (talk) at 20:47, 5 May 2015 (UTC).

  • "designed after a fire as a palace inspired by a model" -- huh? EEng (talk) 18:43, 10 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Article is well written, and well sourced. It is long enough and new enough being moved out of userspace on May 5. The hook also is sourced and interesting, although it may be confusing so it should be tweaked a bit before getting it out. Passed.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 02:41, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Trying, but help appreciated:
ALT1: ... that remodeling after a fire made the private apartments of the Winter Palace (bedroom of Maria Alexandrovna pictured) a "19th-century palace inspired by a model in rococo style"?
ALT2: ... that remodeling after a fire made the private apartments of the Winter Palace a "19th-century palace inspired by a model in rococo style" (bedroom of Maria Alexandrovna pictured)?

I would prefer ALT1. @EEng and KAVEBEAR: what do you think? OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 05:56, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Could someone find the full quote from the source re "model"? In context it doesn't make sense. Possibly there's a misquote? EEng (talk) 06:13, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
It's a book I don't have. How would you phrase - based on the article - that it plays with rococo elements but is far from it, - which you see on the image, even in small size? - Similar in a Renoir painting. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:57, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
  • Honestly I can't make sense of this "model" stuff at all. How about something new:

October Staircase

ALT3 ... that in arresting the provisional Russian government during the October Revolution, Bolsheviks entered the Private Apartments of the Winter Palace via His Majesty's Own Staircase?
There's an attractive img in the article that could go with this hook. EEng (talk) 07:34, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
"Arresting" seems quite mild. I added the image which I find less attractive than the other, - I would still prefer a hook about the other, and more building, less history. The author who left us was interested in the architecture. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 13:51, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Well, arresting is the word used in the article (and we're talking about Kerensky being arrested, not the Tsar (who was already in the clink at this point). And I think its amusing for revolutionaries to entire via His Majesty's Own Staircase. Anyway, if we're going to go back to an "architectural" hook, someone's got to come up with one without this unintelligible "model" stuff. EEng (talk) 13:57, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
To my understanding, the quote means to emphasise how little was left of the original palace (the original being in rococo style); that use of model might be dated or esoteric - or just plain odd. Regardless, the quote refers to the palace as a whole, so - besides it being rather unintelligible - it is misplaced. I'd have suggested an ALT about how the grand October Staircase is a secondary entrance, but that piece of information is not referenced. Alakzi (talk) 14:42, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Keep simple? (Would probably need a ref on the first mentioning.)
ALT4: ... that the private apartments of the Winter Palace were a residence of the Russian Imperial family (bedroom of Maria Alexandrovna pictured)? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:16, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Fine with me (changed the residence to a residence). EEng (talk) 19:49, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Fine with me as well (whatever that's worth). Alakzi (talk) 21:21, 25 May 2015 (UTC)
Good to go with ALT4. OccultZone (TalkContributionsLog) 06:49, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

I think there are more interesting hooks in the article. How about this? Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 10:38, 14 June 2015 (UTC)
