History of York Region[edit]

Just my opinion but I think it was premature to separate this article from York Region as this is just the history part of that article and I don't think it would be too much to simply include the history there. I just think it might be simpler to develop them together, at least until length really does justify a separate article. JosephIWMolto (talk) 09:37, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree. York Region is a small part of what was once York County, and I think the two should remain separate. The history of York Region should focus on the region after the creation of the regional municipality (1971), with appropriate links to this (and other) articles for the period before that. (After all, York Region is what was left over once other jurisdictions were split off from it from the early 1800s to 1971. The fact that it retained the name York is irrelevant, I think. ) Mindmatrix 15:36, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The only reason you give against this is factually incorrect. You say that York Region is only a small part of the former County of York, this is not true. York Region includes ALL of York County as it existed from 1954-1971, before 1954, like almost all Ontario Regions the County of York's boundaries changed several times. York Region IS the Regional Municipality of York County raised in status (wasn't the City of Etobicoke the same as the Township of Etobicoke raised several levels of importance?). If this is the argument then one article would have to be York County pre 1954 and another York County (post 1954) and York Region. JosephIWMolto (talk) 17:51, 2 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I just thought I should add that I'm not really concinvced it is a good idea to combine the articles, I just though it should be put out there. What I was concerned about was that the articles should be clearly linked to each other (it took me a little while to find the link to this article) because York County and York Region ARE the same place, thats why I felt what was argued above was problematic. Yes, the articles should link to each other, and yes, I confused the dates for York County and York Region. However, I still think that including York County's history into the York Region article may not be appropriate, since it would thus require incorporating the history of Toronto, Peel, Halton, et el into the article for York Region, and I don't think that's the best choice here. If you limit the discussion to post-1954, then it's a more palatable consideration, but York County's history is far more expansive than that, and I don't think we should lose that by merging various bits of history about it to the articles about each new jurisdiction it spawned.
