Speedy deletion[edit]

I do not agree that this page should be deleted. It is a simple page about an area electric utility with information taken off its website. It is against policy to have any articles about electric providers? Similar utilities are on wikipedia, like Xcel energy, inc. and Basin Electric Power. Why is this page being targeted? —Preceding unsigned comment added by GSHPashp (talkcontribs) 14:49, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As you will see from the notice at the top of the article, deletion has been proposed because the article "does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject". Wikipedia policy is to have articles only on "notable" subjects. Notability, is, in general, assessed by the subject having received a substantial amount of independent coverage. You can read more about this in the general notability guideline and also, perhaps more useful in this case, the specific guideline for notability of companies. And I would feel that the way rural America was given electricity would be an important part of history that people would want to know. If this page is against guidelines, wouldn't all pages about every company also be against guidelines. If people want to research how electricity is delivered to rural areas, this page could help point them in the right direction.GSHPashp (talk) 14:59, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I fully agree with the first sentence. However, Wikipedia does not exist to propagate little-known information because we think people ought to know it or would want to know it. Wikipedia's policy is that we make available information which has already received substantial attention. There are, I think, very good reasons for this policy, even though it results in not giving coverage to information which, as in this case, I would like to see more widely known. There are more than 45,000 members that own this company that would find this information important. Specifically its history. So, essentially, smaller organizations, such as this, will not be carried on Wikipedia in the thought that no one would want to know about them? Or because they did not have some sort of huge news story going on? GSHPashp (talk) 15:07, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I've declined the speedy deletion of this article on the basis of WP:Notability (WP:CSD#G7) although as written it could have easily been deleted. I did this because if you click on the {{Find sources notice}} links above, you can see that the company is truly notable appearing in numerous books, scholarly papers and news articles. The article needs to be improved with citations from reliable sources but the company is clearly notable. Note that this was not a bad CSD nomination, rather I am exercising some administrative discretion here. Feel free to take the article to WP:AFD if you disagree with my judgment here.
