New Jersey Senate[edit]

Was he really a member of the New Jersey Senate? The National Governors Association biography (see external link in sv:William Sanford Pennington) states that he was a member of the New Jersey State Council in 1801 and 1802. Isn't the governor's council something else than state senate? The virtualology biography also seems to confirm that he was a member of the state assembly but has no mention of him having been a member of the state senate. Most of the article text appears to be lifted from this, so at minimum, proper attribution is needed. Listing as an external link is not sufficient.

That link contains a copyright notice, so there may be a copyright issue.

However, the page lists two sources:

Dictionary of American Biography.
Pennington Family File, The New Jersey Historical Society.

If the text came from those two sources and both are PD, it may be OK to use the text, although proper attribution is still needed.

The first source is not enough to uniquely identify the actual source, but it appears to be:

That doesn't seem to be the source of the words.

I don't know how to access the Pennington Family File.

Absent a citation for the text from a PD source, I think we should conclude that the text came from the Jersey History site. I looked for, but did not find any indications that the material can be used without permission.--SPhilbrick T 22:33, 22 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
