360wichita.com is an "official site" ??? As far as I know, it is paid inclusion directory. Far from being official, it is both incomplete and commercial. Will remove in a few days if no objection. Suggestions on objective Wichita links pages? --Pedal1962 (talk) 16:29, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Eric Harris[edit]

Does the mention of Eric Harris really belong in such an article?

Cleanup[edit]

Thumbing through the history, this page looks like it's gone significant improvements since it was marked fFor cleanup. I'm gonna be bold and un-mark it. Seems pretty clean now. Skotte 05:55, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • While the original pizza hut may have been started in Wichita, I don't think thats information really for the first paragraph!! 67.67.236.148 01:59, 21 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Article lacking stuff.[edit]

I'm not impressed by the looks of the article. Why not talk more about the districts (IE Old Town, College Hill) that the city has? Also maybe include some skyline photos? --- Lets make this page better, with more details about the neighborhoods, districts..etc. Lots of other medium sized cities have that.

I absolutely agree. A neighborhood section would be a good start. I can help with that soon. Lobosolo 04:27, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I can help with that. I'm a new user but lifelong Wichitan. Paedraggaidin 14:57, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Love the idea about the districts. Other cities like Atlanta and St. Louis have 'cityscape' sections describing various neighborhoods. Spacefem 21:08, 27 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wasn't Wichita also one of the settings during the road trip in the movie "The Color of Money"?Dreambuilder1 16:12, 4 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've been looking at Category:FA-Class WikiProject Cities articles to get ideas about what other stuff a city article should have. If you need inspiration that's a good place to start. --Spacefem (talk) 12:01, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

BTK[edit]

I think a section on BTK is inappropriate and should be removed (or merged with the Dennis Rader article, though I'm sure it wouldn't add any info there). This is merely something that happened in Wichita but, by no means, formed Wichita or even significantly changed the course of the city. A mention maybe, but not a full section. Wordbuilder 23:56, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any precedent in Wikipedia for a "(name of town) in the news" section? That would be more appropriate. Didn't BTK's acts happen in the Park City area anyway? ----Steve 18:33, 14 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I found that section odd too—it would be like having a whole section of New York City about the Son of Sam (who actually had a bigger influence on that city than BTK had on Wichita). --Delirium 00:10, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No one has opposed deleting this section. I say we add a few more words about BTK in the History section (where he's already mentioned), link it to the Dennis Rader article, and delete the standalone BTK section. Wordbuilder 16:44, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

agreed -- --Steve 17:40, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I deleted the BTK section and slightly reworded the reference to BTK in the History section.Wordbuilder 03:04, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Peerless princess of the plains[edit]

I believe I've found some articles that refer to Wichita by some different nicknames, such as the headline of this section... I'll look at microfiches and check, though here's the address that tipped me off...

http://specialcollections.wichita.edu/collections/local_history/tihen/pdf/People&Places/Peerless_Princess.PDF#search=%22peerless%20princess%20of%20the%20plains%22 the BTK acts happend in wichita, he lived in park city dumb ass —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.209.160.5 (talk) 02:42, 2 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Media[edit]

I am just curious...the Broadcasting/Media section seems a little sparse. Would it be worthwhile to include a basic description of media in the city (i.e. how many radio and television stations there are) in addition to providing the link to the specific article? Other cities of comparable size (see Buffalo, NY and Cleveland, OH) include this in their respective articles. Paedraggaidin 15:05, 24 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Witchita magazine, as far as I can tell, is not the "official city magazine" as the article states. The magazine is an independent magazined owned by Whitaker Publications of Springfield, Missouri. It is certainly not associated with the city but merely serves the area. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.170.29.229 (talk) 20:26, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Too many lists[edit]

There are way too many lists in this article, including one that consist mostly of red-links. Hydrogen Iodide 05:01, 20 May 2007 (UTC) the wichita is a fake group[reply]

Epic Center[edit]

A picture of Wichita's tallest building, The Epic Center, up close, would be a nice addition.67.130.119.210 23:48, 29 May 2007 (UTC) Ya i also think there should be a picture of the epic center The tallest building in kansas and maybe you shoutl talk about lawrence dumont stadium too —Preceding unsigned comment added by Colinmatthew90 (talkcontribs) 18:05, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I live in Wichita, KS[edit]

Any pictures. Let me know. I'll try to take them, since I live there. I'll try to get a picture of Epic Center in the near future. Thanks, CarpD 6/1/07

Propose removing cultural references[edit]

I propose removing the list of cultural references. They're discouraged on Wikipedia, and the list is ridiculously long. CopaceticThought (talk) 23:36, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Lord yes, it makes us seem like we're a bunch of hicks hung up on the ballance of whites, asians, and blacks. Strangely, it has no mention of the rapidly increasing hispanic population.

It either needs to be improved and shrunk, or taken away in my oppinion. 76.227.102.118 (talk) 01:54, 25 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My edit[edit]

OK, I did a few things to this article:

  • minor copy-editing (not too much)
  • wikified what I could, mainly in the History section

I put in the weasel-words tag mainly because of "This is considered by many a stepping stone to launch new development downtown." in History. It also needs a source.

There are a few red links, but most of those were already there. I did add one or two that I think could use articles, such as Swallow Aircraft Company.

I left the copyedit tag because, really, are any of these ever done? :) --Knockwood (talk) 08:48, 5 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Made a few more small edits.
Also... anyone know who Drew Small is? --Knockwood (talk) 01:44, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

the malls[edit]

A while back (and this might have been lost) I wanted to convey the interesting east side/west side balance Wichita has going on. I tried to think of how things are split... there's a mall on each side near Kellogg, more big shopping on each side near 21st. College hill on the east, Riverside on the west. But I didn't say it exactly right and now that paragraph on the cityscape section has a weird last paragraph about malls... anyway I'm not even sure what I'm trying to say here, I just wanted to say that my original intention with that paragraph hasn't turned out right but if you've got ideas, go for it. --Spacefem (talk) 23:28, 26 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Old stuff[edit]

I live in Texas and collect bells. I am down sizing and was throwing out some of my bells. I noticed that an old one I picked up had writing on it. It says on one side "SILVER ANNIVERSARY GOOD WILL TOUR 1928" and on the other side, " RING FOR WICHITA THE AIR CAPITAL". I know nothing about Witchita Kansas but decided to hold on to this till I move. If it means something to you let me know by posting a comment to this and I will figure out a way to get it to you.

SGB

PS. I had to google to learn Witchita Kansas was the air capital. I love history so I found this very interesting. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.248.6.157 (talk) 22:14, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's Wichita, NOT Witchita. Vcn3wb05 (talk) 19:54, 2 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Downtown Arena[edit]

The "Air Capital" section states that a downtown arena will soon be built, but the Intrust Bank Arena is already in existence for a couple years now. 4.59.119.118 (talk) 16:38, 23 August 2011 (UTC)Wichita resident.[reply]

Boeing is going[edit]

Worth a mention on the road to rust-belt status? Hcobb (talk) 22:10, 16 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

All the aviation industry history in Wichita material should probably be a separate article. It's certainly worthy of one.

The Wichita Eagle Article [1] on the history of Boeing in Wichita mentions the 1935 crash of a "Boeing XC-17" as the instigator for IV National Bank of Wichita Loan that kept Boeing-Stearman in Wichita prior to WWII. I assume they are refering to the aircraft better known as the "Model 299" that crashed on 30 October 1935. I have never before seen the "Model 299" that crashed on 30 October 1935 called the "XC-17". Can anyone confirm that the "XC-17" designation was ever used for the "Model 299"? --Smulthaup (talk) 20:59, 14 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
