Random stuff[edit]

Prior to 1969 Wheeler Heights didn't exist. A new Public School (State/ Primary) called Collaroy Plateau West Primary had been built in 1963 as two brick buildings which were served by a concrete driveway leading from Veterans' Parade. The more upslope of these buildings housed the Primary (Year 3 to 6) classrooms and the downslope building housed the Infants (Kinder, years 1 & 2) classrooms. This School's original name provided persistent confusion with Collaroy Plateau Primary and consequent mis-directed State-Transit buses used for taking school sports teams to interschool sports on Friday afternoons. As such, the Principal Gerry Wilkinson, and Deputy Principal, Selwyn Bennett sought the opinion of staff members as to an appropriate alternative name for the school. As Sportsmaster at the time it now seems that my suggestion of Wheeler Heights (after one of the original settlers in the area) was adopted (from 1969 on). With persistent requests by later residents through the Manly Daily, for the name of the area in 2007 I gave the history to John Morecombe (MD) himself a former Collaroy Plateau student.He wrote a bief history with respect to the adoption of the School's name as a real estate marketing device for the burgeoning suburb which was later given the postcode of 2098. Later on in the 1990s the name was declared by the Geographic Names Board to no longer be of a separate suburb but simply a locality and the postcode reverted to Collaroy; 2097.
