Untitled[edit]

Did city council members used to be elected by wards some time in the past? I know that the current system of council members by district originated in the 1950s (1954 IIRC), preceeded by a mayor and 7 "commisioners"; I think I heard some earlier city system elected representatives by ward but can't find a reference or details. -- Infrogmation 02:16, 5 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wards in local culture[edit]

I have added paragraph about the use and significance of wards in local culture beyond their designation of official districts. Although there is no source currently, I have several possible sources to suggest. In terms of books, I would start with Nik Cohn's "Triksta: Life and Death and New Orleans Rap" (although I can personally tell you this guy makes a lot of factual errors, especially on the topic of wards, so I'd probably opt to leave that one out as a source), and more poignantly, the five books in the New Orleans Neighborhood Story Project. Onto music, there are as many as 100 or more nationally-charted songs that mention New Orleans Wards, and thousands more if you include local music. If I had to pick one book for now, though, it would be "Before and After N. Dorgenois by Ebony Bolding", as it includes interviews with elder residents of the 6th Ward who voice their impressions and opinions of the cultural phenomenon they saw come into existence.Wbbigtymer 18:27, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I almost forgot. There are two documentary-style DVDs that also shed a great deal of light on this topic. "New Orleans Exposed" and "Straight from the Projects: 3rd Ward, New Orleans" are both extremely instructive on the nature of wards in New Orleans culture.Wbbigtymer 23:53, 24 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
