A few years ago in 2003 going through Pittsburgh I remember seeing the North pier, and the North Portal of the Wabash Tunnel, I was wondering what these were the other day and I was actually searching Wikipedia on this, I found the article on the tunnel and I just spotted this orphan article on the bridge. Now I do see the piers in Google Earth, in fact I marked the waypoint (located between the 2 piers) and added it to this article The North Pier is kinda hidden by a Dock around it but you should be able to see it if you look real closely. The South pier is located about 150 feet to the West of the Gateway Clipper Fleet dock (about 30 to the West feet from the Western most boat). Now if you scroll down South a little ways you will see the North portal to the Wabash Tunnel which was more recently opened to HOV traffic. Ah hah :D I see it now. It fed right into the tunnel, to the south. Interestingly, if you turn on the 'railroad' layer on google earth you can see a black line (representing railroad tracks) coming out of the south end of the tunnel, over the hill. I'd love to see what the tunnel looked like before they remodeled it for vehicle traffic! Or at least the openings of the tunnel. Was it all boarded up? And the concrete vehicle ramp (you can tell its fairly new at least at the time the photo was taken--the concrete is really bright) leading up to the north entrance of the tunnel, if you turn the railroad layer on you can see there were tracks going under it that came off that railbridge to the east, and connecting with the existing rail line that runs east-west under the ramp. That line now goes into a different tunnel, nearer the bridge. --Ragemanchoo (talk) 23:08, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The external link provide soem info into the Bridge. At the bottom of that page was a link to the tunnel and did indeed have a picture of it before is was reopened. Its right at the top of this page at http://pghbridges.com/pittsburghW/0583-4475/wabash_tun.htm. Basicly it looked like a hole in the hillside with no way of getting to it, that is how I remember seeing this when I made the trip there a few years ago. I came accross this interesting web page on a replacement bridge that would had been a new span connecting right to Market Street.(which ment the new bridge would had came out just to the east of the historic span.) The new bridge was to be a Steel Arch Suspension Bridge. You can see more on this at http://pittsburgh.pahighways.com/busways/wbusway.html.
