I read in a book about morocco written by dutch historian that the word volubilis is taken from the berber word "Alili" which means "oleandor". The moroccan name is almost the same (walili). Read3r 18:37, 30 October 2006 (UTC)

sentence doesn't make sense

What does "who acted as regent until the majority of Idris II" mean?

Although much of Volubilis has yet to be excavated, a number of prominent public buildings still stand (albeit reconstructed), as does a triumphal arch. - any estimate of what percentage has been excavated so far?

I'm getting the same thing. How annoying! It's the official website of the current excavation project so it's an absolutely critical resource. It is rather artlessly executed, as the animals are all of different sizes and face in different directions, with no relationship to Orpheus. - the first clause (bolded to illustrate) comes across as POV. I'd leave it out and let the statements speak for themselves.

Not really - I checked it against the map in Ethel Davis's book and a larger-scale version of the Volubilis Project's map (you can see a smaller version archived here. My version is obviously very much simplified, partly to make it work at the smaller resolution and partly to avoid treading on anyone's copyright, but it's accurate - everything that I've annotated is where it's supposed to be. What about those mosaics exposed to sun and weather?

Are these ingenious mosaics still exposed to weather and sun? Or are they covered at least? If not, why are the responsible "archeologists" rather destroyer than scientists? They should preserve, not destroy... --178.197.236.93 (talk) 19:51, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Yes, they are still very much exposed to the elements. There isn't any covering for the mosaics. Unfortunately this has led to some bleaching of the colours, as can be seen in e.g. File:Volubilis mosaic Four Seasons.jpg. This is mostly the fault of the Moroccan government, which has reportedly given only a minimal amount of funding to preserve the site. Prioryman (talk) 23:04, 12 March 2014 (UTC)

Translation text on Triumphal Arch

I think "IMPERATORI IIII" should be translated as "Victorious Commander for the 4th time", not "Emperor for the 4th time": Caracalla was emperor only once, from 198 to 217. Note: Caracalla's full name, as emperor, was Marcus Aurelius Severus Antoninus Augustus, and the "Augustus" was the recognition that he was Emperor.
