Privy Council
When was Dr Cable sworn of the Privy Council, and why? I am not really convinced that he is a member of the Privy Council. He has been an MP for only ten years and has never served in HM Government. As acting leader of the third largest party in the House of Commons I suppose he would expect to be appointed to the Council, but according to the history of this article he has been a Privy Councillor (or Counsellor - I think both terms are used) since before becoming acting leader. He is not in the category "Members of the Privy Council of the United Kingdom" and I shan't add him until somebody confirms that he is indeed a member.--Oxonian2006 11:35, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
- Nor do any of the lists of Privy Councillors link here. I guess someone has put two & two together and made five. Campbell was sworn of the PC before he became leader but that was a personal honour as he was a senior and respected figure in the House. Timrollpickering 19:00, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

- Interesting. Thanks for putting it right. I'm not sure which two and two the somebody in question put together. As I said, the Rt Hon style predated his becoming acting leader. Maybe somebody thought that all MPs are styled The Rt Hon. Paddy Ashdown was sworn of the Privy Council about six months after becoming party leader and Charles Kennedy after about two months. I think we can assume that the next leader will be too. What the rationale was behind giving Dr Cable the style of Rt Hon I am not sure.--Oxonian2006 22:23, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Ive corrected it because ive checked on the offical minutes of the privy council and hes not on it and it hasnt met since April 2010 and thus he cant have been added to it since the election (Maidels (talk) 19:36, 12 May 2010 (UTC))
Wedding rings
Are we being told that he wears his late wife's ring along with his present wife's on the same finger (ring finger left hand), which is, I think, unusual - or just that he wears his late wife's ring but on another finger/hand (much more usual, I think). Vince Cable told Gordon Brown repeatedly that he did not want to go into coalition with the Conservatives, according to insider accounts of the talks that reshaped British politics. Dr Cable, the deputy Liberal Democrat leader, used a series of telephone calls with Mr Brown to emphasise that he regarded a deal with the Tories as the least palatable option for his party, The Times has learnt.
