Revamp

i went ahead and moved the Forensic's team thing into a recent news section which i figured could house the accomplishments of the students and staff, heck ill even update it, i check the UTD news section a lot btw CONGRATS AND GREAT JOB!!! you've shown that we're coming up in the world. i have also added after a lot of digging around, a campus section displaying the future map of UTD, thought it was a good thing to look forward to. i was also planning on adding an athletics section, putting both our championship chess team and our other D3 NCAA teams, because they deserve credit for all the hard work they put in. feel free to change stuff i just figured the way it was set up was really messy making it look like all we had was chess and forensics to offer. this makes it easier for people to find information kinda doing the same layout as our big bro school UT Austin. This way it is more user friendly to those actually looking to gain info about UTD. i also wish to add a notable alumni section, if i can find that list again barried in the archives, there weren't a whole lot but hey why not brag about what we got.Butterbean04 07:20, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

Selectivity Dispute

I'm not quite so sure that UTD is the most selective state university. UT Austin's article states that UT is the most selective state university. I'm currently looking into it and doing research outside of Wikipedia. I'll remove the template once I find out which claim is factual. If someone else finds it, please do me the favor of removing the template and making changes accordingly.

UTD is the second hardest (most selective) public school in Texas to get accepted. This year, UTD did have the highest avg SAT score of any other Texas public university.

I'm interested to know who is the most selective. Although students may find it difficult to gain acceptance to the University of Texas at Austin because of the large number of students that apply, their admission rate (percent of applicants admitted) is much higher than that of UTD's. UTD has an average acceptance rate of around 51 percent. {www.collegeboard.com}Ohthatsyou 14:44, 21 November 2006 (UTC)

I don't think that's a good measure of selectivity. For instance, there may be a bias within the applicant pool itself. It's also somewhat difficult to rank selectivity in Texas schools with the 10% rule in effect. UTD can put more emphasis on accepting students based on their SAT scores because it's less laden-down by the 10%ers who often matriculate into UT-Austin or A&M. Since there's not really an objective criterion for determining selectivity among Texas colleges, I don't think that *any* of our schools should make a claim to that mantle. Waterview Park

There's a page describing the on campus housing at Waterview Park. I'm not sure how to include it in the UTD page, however.

I added a brief sentence about it (having lived there myself), but someone might feel it belongs in a different paragraph. User:Kyle Maxwell 04 July 2005

Cecil Green

We need to fix this. The link to the great philanthropist is to some race car driver. UTD's Cecil Green was many things but he wasn't a race car driver. Zyzzy 20:14, 25 July 2005 (UTC)Zyzzy

Chess and Forensics

I do not think the forensic team section is very encyclopedic. Barring any objections, I will cut it down and merge it with the chess section. -Scm83x 03:20, 24 October 2005 (UTC)

CS degrees

I agree with whoever said that "quantity of degree conferral is a poor measure of quality." And, I think adding it to the page makes UTD look cheap, like it's trying to match up to MIT and that's the only thing it can find. UTD is a great school, and that one stat makes it look like the school has to really reach for something to be proud about, which it doesn't.-Scm83x 07:52, 7 November 2005 (UTC)

werd, i like just plain not having it in there, in that it makes us look like we are really looking for something.

Dal Tech/TIT removal

I've noticed the Dal Tech/TIT line was removed due to it being unsourced. I'll support that removal--in my three years as a student at UTD, I have never heard a single person refer to it as Dal Tech or TIT. My guess is that it's an in-joke among a very small clique of students that hasn't spread to anyone outside that clique. jgp (T|C) 20:56, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

I also should have mentioned that it had nothing to do with "History" which was the section it was in. Otherwise I probably would have {{citation need}}ed it. --Grouse 21:02, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

High tech industry

"...has its roots in the development of the Metroplex's high tech industry." What on earth does that mean? --Grouse 21:06, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

I'm going to guess that it's referring to UTD and TI being founded by the same people. jgp (T|C) 21:19, 18 June 2006 (UTC)
Oh. If that's true and notable, then why not just say that? --Grouse 21:37, 18 June 2006 (UTC)

Redirect University of Texas to University of Texas System

Hi, there is a ongoing debate about redirecting University of Texas to University of Texas System at talk: University of Texas at Austin. If you are interested, please feel free to join. RockiRock 20:46, 28 September 2006 (UTC)

Architecture

If anyone knows of any pictures of NSERL currently online which can be used under the fair usage policy, or would be willing to take a picture, (or any other building for that matter), it would be a substantial contribution to the campus architecture section. Ryan.metzler 21:07, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Done. NSERL photo taken and uploaded. Rigel1 19:03, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

Academic Programs

Having a list of all of the degrees offered by UT-D is unnecessary listcruft, and could be condensed into a list of the individual schools (much shorter list) with descriptions of each school. This section in general needs clean-up.Ryan.metzler 21:17, 8 June 2007 (UTC)

Ok, I replaced the whole academic programs section with paragraphs about each school and removed the table listing all the degree programs. Rigel1 20:24, 19 September 2007 (UTC)
Great! Thanks Rigel1. First campus picture. This is starting to look like a real university wiki! Also, good job on fixing up academic programs.Ryan.metzler

Radio UTD

There should be a mention of the college radio station- it is very well-regarded/notable among college radio stations. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.110.197.250 (talk) 05:18, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I added links for the CMJ nominations in 2006 and 2007. Ebright82 18:18, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

I think they've been nominated once again for CMJ awards. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.110.196.226 (talk) 18:25, 8 November 2008 (UTC)

UTD Comets

The logo or sign or whatever for UTD comets has changed long time ago! Someone please update the image from here [1]. Ebright82 02:56, 17 October 2007 (UTC)

Update: Rmetzler has updated the logo some while ago.Ebright82 (talk) 22:10, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

History

I have added some {{cite web}} templates for article citations, particularly in the History section. Please do not remove them without explanation. Rigel1 (talk) 02:46, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Utdallas seal small.png

Image:Utdallas seal small.png is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Destination Imagination

It seems to me that the list of UTDs DI team placings is not really relevant to the article and should perhaps be removed. Unless there is a good reason for keeping them there, It probably time for them to be cut.Rmetzler (talk) 21:23, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Agree. If it's notable enough, it could be spun off. If not, it should be pared down. Redrocket (talk) 21:34, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
Lets leave this open for another week. If nobody can come up with a good reason they should be in the UTD wiki entry, I'm going to cut them. It is already stated in the manuscript that UTD does well in DI. It is important that people don't use the wiki for boasting about themselves or their organization's accomplishments unless it is truly noteworthy (i.e. makes at least statewide news or is published in journals and contributes significantly to UTDs culture or reputation.) The reason I mention this is because I noticed that this is the 3rd time in the last year I have seen an organization which is seemingly "feeling its oats" on the wiki. (The other 2 times being the debate and pistol teams, which had to have their paragraphs down.)Rmetzler (talk) 22:56, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
I agree with removing the DI section. They might do good things and UTD should be proud of their accomplishments but it does not seem worthy of inclusion in the main article here. Rigel1 (talk) 13:34, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

Notable Faculty

In the past two years, UTD has been recruiting quite a few distinguished and notable faculty from all over the place. (Some who have wiki entries and Nobel prizes.) Perhaps its time to add this section?Rmetzler (talk) 21:23, 15 March 2008 (UTC)

Agree, especially for faculty with their own wikipedia pages. That certainly establishes notability. Redrocket (talk) 21:34, 15 March 2008 (UTC)
Started a notable faculty list. Didn't have much time today, so I will try to add more later. Please add more and add descriptions if you get a chance.Rmetzler (talk) 23:19, 16 March 2008 (UTC)
If you add a faculty to this listing, please add a reason for listing them.

Greek life

Why is it that anytime someone adds a section to the page about greek life someone removes it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.170.232.22 (talk) 05:55, 7 May 2008 (UTC)

  • I haven't been involved in that at all, but I don't think Greek Life merits its own section by any means. At most I would suggest devoting 2-3 sentences about it in a "student life" section. In that section you should also talk about student demographics, housing, student-origins, and other activities that have nothing to do with fraternities/sororities. Considering UTD's population consists of an extremely high proportion of graduate students, I would think it has even less 'greek' activity than average.--Elred (talk) 20:34, 7 October 2008 (UTC)

School of Management

Under the School of Management section, there is reference to the different degrees offered by the school. However, when following the reference link and looking around, it appears that these are optional focuses for the one MBA degree they currently offer. Can anybody clarify on that? If not, I'll go ahead and update it to more accurately reflect what the school offers. JDbruin (talk) 18:08, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

According to the UT Dallas graduate catalog, the Finance and Supply Chain Management degrees are separate MS degrees, not MBA specialties. I updated the article accordingly. Rigel1 (talk) 14:49, 26 July 2008 (UTC)

Student Government

The executive committee paragraph should be removed. Aside from being somewhat self-aggrandizing, I hardly think being in student government merits adding your name to wikipedia.24.175.87.124 (talk) 13:23, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. I don't see the SG executive committee members as being notable. -Rigel1 (talk) 21:42, 8 September 2008 (UTC)
Agreed (WP:UNIGUIDE)--Ebright82 (talk) 03:01, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Temoc as Mascot?

It is a few days that people keep removing Temoc as the mascot of UTD and replace Comets as it. Guys, Comets is our nickname and it has been for a long time. Temoc, on the other hand, is the mascot. For example, Northeastern university students are nicknamed Huskies, but their mascot is Paws. Or USC students' nickname is Trojans, but their mascot is Traveler.

In 2008 the mascot was retired, but as the new mascot is not finalized yet, we are still using Temoc. Please see here: [2]. So please do not change it, and wait until the new mascot is introduced. But there is no doubt we are Comets, and will be Comets. --Ebright82 (talk) 03:17, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

NPOV text

I removed a good bit of NPOV text from the article. It's my alma mater but there was too much cheerleading, particularly in the sections on the chess and billiard teams. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kyle Maxwell (talkcontribs) 20:58, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Athletics Section

Why is there a whole sub-section about the lack of a football team, and a corny joke that has probably been told at every college that doesn't have a football team? Shouldn't this be removed? GBizzle (talk) 07:52, 23 February 2009 (UTC)

  • I agree, that section needs major edit. --Ebright82 (talk) 07:44, 24 February 2009 (UTC)

"UTD" link to Uniform-geometrical Theory of Diffraction

Just out of curiosity, why is this particular link there? If there are other things that UTD could stand for wouldn't it make more sense to link to a disambiguation page? Or not in this case since there is only one other abbreviation so far? Steven (talk) 05:13, 16 August 2009 (UTC)

Fixed Oldag07 (talk) 20:27, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Proposed Changes

As someone who is about to attend UTD, I figured I would pitch in to help out.

Thoughts:

  • Create a Student life section. create subsections, student government, and media, and an activities section. Merge billard, debate, and chess team into the activities section. Done Oldag07 (talk) 21:45, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
  • Merge university presidents into notable alumni
  • Merge football team comments into the first athletics paragraph.
  • Take some pictures of campus to place on article
  • Academic schools could be split into separate individual pages
  • Add{{Infobox US university ranking}} to page, and add a section on rankings
  • Remove weasel words

I will try and eventually hit these goals, but if anyone would like to comment on them, please do so. Thanks Oldag07 (talk) 20:37, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

Comet Cards and Attorney services are quite in most universities. I removed them because I thought they were not as notable enough for wikipedia. Oldag07 (talk) 21:45, 19 August 2009 (UTC)
The campus is in the middle of some major construction projects: the beautification (enhancement) project, new Student Services Building, new MSET Building and Founders Building renovation. When these are done in the next few months, I will add some new photos. Right now is not a good photo-taking time. Rigel1 (talk) 18:36, 7 April 2010 (UTC)
