Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies

Someone flagged the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies article saying it should be merged here. I disagree, since this is a unique Ukrainian Canadian institution. -- JamesTeterenko 04:27, 5 June 2006 (UTC)

It should not be merged into this article, as main university articles tend to get quite large, even though this one is not (yet). If it must be merged, it could be merged into St. Andrew's College (Winnipeg). -- Usgnus 05:37, 5 June 2006 (UTC)
I think that if it is merged into anything, it should be St. Andrew's College (Winnipeg), since they are partly connected, but not into the U of M.--Calak 19:33, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
The Centre for Ukrainian Studies is a division of U of M. It is part of the college as well, but the connection to UofM is more important in terms of prestige of the academic studies done there. The college itself is an affiliated college of the University. For example, Theology students at St. Andrew's College have no connection to the University of Manitoba whereas all other students (including student of the Centre for Ukkrainian Studies) are University of Manitoba students first and foremost.

Notable Alumni

The 'Notable Alumni' section of this article is getting quite out of hand. If you refer to the history, you'll find that most of it is just additions of notable alumni and staff. Perhaps a new article should be created or all but particularly notable alumni should be removed. -Hiebert 23:52, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

Editors?

Does anyone help the website for editing the article of U of M? -- Fatck 10:23, Sept 9 2006 (UTC)

Long link lists

Sections containing long external link lists, such as 'Academics' and 'Libraries' should be removed in adherance with http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:External_links#Important_points_to_remember. Hiebert 21:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)

OK, I will work at removing the external links within the body of the article in the Academics section. And for now will leave the text (non-linked). Jimj wpg (talk) 09:07, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

POV/OR: The University, Funding, and Fees

  1. In my opinion, this section barely belongs in this article, as it only talks about the very recent history of the University, and in a very specific context (student fees). Create an article about student fees at the University of Manitoba if necessary.
  2. The article is written from a POV against tuition fee increases and ancillary fees, and editorializes instead of just stating the facts. Those familiar with University of Manitoba Students Union marketing materials may notice similarities between such materials and this section.
  3. This article cites no sources for any of its claims.

For these reasons, I've tagged the article with POV and OR, and see no reason to remove these tags unless this section is deleted or moved into a new article. UMwoodr0 06:48, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

I'll respond to your concerns in order -
  1. I think if you asked around, a fair chunk of the public (and many, if not most, of the students) would state they believe tuition fees and the like are one of the more important issues related to a University. Certainly the University President's recent stance towards tuition freezes, funding, and such is perhaps unusual for top university administrators, and is hopefully noteworthy enough to be included. Of course, being that this is WP, feel free to work the section into something that doesn't take up 20% of the page.
  2. In terms of POV, I tried to write it in an non-POV way, but was apparently unsuccessful.. as you are obviously well aware of the POV issues, please add sources and the like helping fix the POV. I will, however, take another look at the text when I add citations and try to see what I can do.
  3. My apologies for the lack of sources, that is absolutely a valid criticism. I believe all of the information included came from the Manitoban (student paper), and I was planning on adding citations ASAP. As a result, I hope concerns about OR will be laid to rest.
Thanks for the comments. Crigaux 21:25, 31 July 2007 (UTC)

Univ. of Manitoba Cyclotron Project?

Hi, back in the 1970s and 1980s the U of M had a cyclotron project. Since this is noteable on it's own, should it be mentioned in the article? I arrived here looking for information about whether it still existed or the date of it's dismantling (google didn't help) --64.110.234.124 (talk) 20:18, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Have you tried NewspaperArchive.com ? It has archival copies of the Winnipeg Tribune and the Winnipeg Free Press. For this resource all you need is a Winnipeg Public Library card in good standing. Jimj wpg (talk) 09:27, 6 February 2020 (UTC)

Notable Staff

Can anyone provide evidence that Guy Maddin was actually a Professor? I know he's taught some courses, but that's not the same thing.

Why is Carol Shields not listed under "Notable Staff"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.63.35.7 (talk) 17:46, 16 November 2012 (UTC)
