Page Overhaul[edit]

This page has needed some major changes for a while, and the recent tags only prove the point. This article details a major part of the University of Dayton, and there is certainly enough information about it to make this both sourced and credible. Anyone willing to help me tackle this? I don't have the time to do it by myself, and I'm not on campus anymore. Newsboy85 22:13, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As you probably noticed, it's been a week since my original postings, and I'm starting the overhaul of the page. This could take a few days or more to complete, so feel free to add any suggestions to the talk page. Newsboy85 22:10, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As a side note, I'm not sure what the procedure is regarding the tags that were recently placed on this article. Can I remove them myself when the overhaul is done, or do I need to contact an administrator to remove them properly, and if so, how? Newsboy85 23:14, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm still looking for additional sources, so if anyone has anything other than Flyer News available, let me know. There are a couple of articles from USA Today and the DDN, but they're not really on topic. Newsboy85 22:47, 7 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unique Houses[edit]

Now I know all of these can't be really proven but can we try to stay semi-realistic? Ud pkp 2005 13:49, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For houses that may change from school year to school year try and include the year (06'-07') so that in the future the can be removed or changed as needed. Also keep the list current, it will take up to much space to include past unique houses, unless it is very unique.Ud pkp 2005 18:51, 31 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If any house is entered improperly (i.e. no italics where there should be, not in correct order on list) it will be removed. If you care enough to add a house to the list, care enough to do it correctly.

We should consider removing the unique houses section entirely. While it was a great idea, it is quickly becoming a list for anyone who has decided to name their house, and will no doubt include nearly every house in the neighborhhod in a few more years. While there are some truly historic houses, most of the unique houses listed are simply the current name for a given house. Newsboy85 21:36, 29 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As there has been no more discussion on this matter in the past week, I am going to delete most of this section, as it is generally unverifiable. I am going to leave fraternities and sororities for the moment, pending any further discussion, as they do generally link to other pages Newsboy85 22:02, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I am removing the last of the unique houses that do not include a source. I know this is not something that will make people happy, but this is an encyclopedia, not a collection of cool names people came up with. If you still want to discuss this removal, please post to this talk page. It's been a month now, and no one has bothered to discuss it beyond simply adding their own unsourced houses back in. So, they're gone. Newsboy85 21:52, 21 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It makes no sense that the only houses "acceptable" are Fraternity and Sorority houses, when, in fact, fraternities and sororities play a very MINOR role in the University of Dayton community. Actually, you make a good point. I've been considering removing the section on special interest houses for just that reason - they really don't play a big role on campus, and lists are discouraged in good articles anyway, per the recent peer review. As for the idea of adding additional houses, it's not happening - there's simply no source, and they tend to change from time to time anyway. The only reason the three listed in the preceeding paragraph can be included is because the houses have signs that are pictured on the UD housing website - and even that's fairly tenuous for a source. Anyone want to comment about removing the list of houses altogether? Newsboy85 (talk) 18:15, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Move back to University of Dayton Ghetto[edit]

To move the main article to "University of Dayton South Student Neighborhood" is a crock. This seems to be the action of the administration working hard to ban the term 'Ghetto'. This censoring action is reprehensible and totally agaisnt what it is the Ghetto stands for. As an alumni I have made this clear to the current administration. Lets keep things real here, not cave to an official rhetoric.

Wherever it goes we need to decide here. Having no information available is worse than have it be under a name that is not as liked. AntiVandalBot is also being a pain with this redirect war. And I don't know if WhisperToMe is purposely doing this or not. Ud pkp 2005 16:54, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually AntiVandalBot is mine..... WhisperToMe doesn't run it. I've used admin move to change the name, I hope that works -- Tawker 17:07, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, it was just becoming a pain. I think this one might need to be locked from vandalism. How do you go about making that happen? Ud pkp 2005 17:13, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why is this still being called the "South Student Neighborhood"? This is ridiculous. What needs to be done to get it referred to by it's proper title of the Ghetto?--Tjcthree 22:44, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's well known as the Ghetto, I don't even go to the school, I've lived in Dayton all my life, and everyone who has lived in Dayton at least a little while knows what the Ghetto is. Another thing, the University never made it's way into the Darkside until at least the mid 1980s. Students have lived there a little before then, before that, it was really known as a "crack" neighborhood, lot of crack houses. They cleared a bunch of land there, tore down a lot of the houses that could not have been rehabbed, and in their place stand Garden Apartments, which were built in the late 1980s. All that neighborhood meant back before then was the entrance to Woodland Cemetary. Other than that, people had no business being in that neighborhood until the University came in and cleaned it up. I'll agree that it needs to go back to University of Dayton Ghetto. Students at the university, past and present, don't know it as anything else. I should also point out that trying to rename it to the "South Student Neighborhood" is the third such attempt by the university that I know of. The two previous failed names were "The Triange" (roughly the shape of the area) and "The Village" (a movement from the 1960s). You can read more about the histroy of the Ghetto here. In any case, as this is the third attempt to change the name and the term Ghetto is still in use, I vote that the article be returned to "University of Dayton Ghetto" and that "South Student Neighborhood" become a redirect page. Well, it's been a week, and no one seems to be paying any attention to this talk page anymore. So, I guess I'll just start this overhaul myself and take it one step at a time. Per the explanation provided above, and the recent anonymous yet accurate changes, I'm moving the page back to "University of Dayton Ghetto" where it should be. Citation requests[edit]

  • Can you provide a reliable source showing that the term "ghetto" is being used in the original meaning of the word in an affectionate manner and not pejoratively?
  • Was the Castle really given a stone façade because of its nickname? (And is it really "famous"?) Closenplay 01:08, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the first, because I don't have a source, and it wasn't text that I added anyway. As for the second, the press release from the university makes specific refernce to the Castle. I'll get a picture of it up when I can. Newsboy85 05:23, 9 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, just an FYI, I'll be in Dayton this week so I should be able to take some photos for this article. I'll make sure to get the Castle, McGinnis, ArtStreet and a few other houses around the neighborhood. Any other suggestions on specific buidlings or houses? Leave a message by about noon EST on Wednesday, Sept. 26 with any suggestions. Newsboy85 17:42, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Pictures to be added soon, when I find the time. Newsboy85 06:31, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I got the chance to do some editing earlier than I thought, so all the pictures are uploaded. Comments, anyone? Newsboy85 18:51, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
