Do marines do sit-ups or crunches?[edit]

In a crunch the lower back remains on the floor, making it impossible for the arms to touch the thighs. The exercise described is therefore a sit-up rather than a crunch. Which one are marines tested on; the one named, or the one described?

I believe this is the source of the misinformation:

Crunches

Crunches are executed with the feet flat on the ground or 12 inches apart (which ever is more comfortable), knees bent at a 90 degree angle, and your arms on your ribcage or chest. One crunch is completed when the upper body is lifted until both arms touch the thighs and then lowered until the shoulder blades touch the ground. The arms must be in constant contact with the chest or rib cage; the buttocks must be in constant contact with the ground. The exercise is performed with the heel of your foot always on the ground. The Marine is given two minutes to complete the exercise. Males must complete 44 Crunches to pass exercise.

The order referenced by the page (MCO 6100.13) says crunches. So now the question is do we use the Marine Corps' terminology?Jklharris (talk) 20:57, 30 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Old Corps" run versus the current run[edit]

A brief timeline of the MCOs that define the PFT:

  • MCO 6100.13 (08 Aug 2008) cancelled MCO 6100.12
  • MCO 6100.12 (10 May 2002) cancelled MCO 6100.3J
  • MCO 6100.3J (28 Feb 1988) cancelled MCO 6100.3H

I was only able to locate the documents for MCOs going back to MCO 6100.3J [1], and that MCO also has the verbiage "over reasonably level ground" for the run.

MCOs prior to a certain date appear to be scarce online. MCO 6100.3H was published on 23-Oct-1980, as per Navy report 87-26 [2]

It would seem that the "Old Corps" style run would either be defined in MCO 6100.3H or else in an older MCO that was cancelled on or before 23-Oct-1980.
