Translation of Umschlagplatz[edit]

In the article, Umschlagplatz is translated as 'change of place,' though this is not quite on target. As it is translated, 'Platz' would mean 'place,' though in the geographical sense, German would use the word 'Ort,' not 'Platz.' The LEO dictionary, available at http://dict.leo.org lists the main translation of Umschlagplatz as 'reloading point.' It is implied as a proper name in the article, though the word in German is a general word for many locations. It doesn't only have the transportation connotation (especially for the Warsaw Ghetto Umschlagplatz), but also the meaning of a place where transactions take place (generally business transactions, though in this case bartering and even human transactions), as can be seen from the roots umschlagen, to transact, and Platz, a plaza or square, usually used in the name of city-squares or market centers (for instance, Trafalgar Square would be translated as Trafalgarplatz). To prevent this from getting longer already, I summarize by saying that the translation is slightly misleading, explaining why I have switched it to 'place of change' instead of 'change of place.' Removed Text[edit]

I have removed the following text from the page:

"Treblinka could only take 10,000 souls a day."

It is unclear if this is an emotional statement or a refference to the "extermination capacity" of the facility. In either event, it needs to be sourced and clarified. --Shortfuse 01:48, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Back to the translation[edit]

Often splitting a word into its components and trying to translate each separately produces unfortunate results. So, too, does ignoring the context. I'd suggest that in this context an appropriate tranlation of Umschlagplatz would be loading center or loading point. These translations also have the advantage of being clear in English and reader-friendly. Norvo (talk) 02:26, 13 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

name[edit]

I moved this to just "Umschlagplatz" as this is the place mostly known by that name. However, there was another Umschlagplatz in Lublin. If an article is ever created on that, a disambiguation would be necessary. Volunteer Marek 06:01, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was also the Umschlagplatz of Lodz at the so-called Radogoszcz Station... in our Wikipedia under Radegast railway station (don't know why?). Check out the quote from the Lodz-Ghetto.com: "For years, the building lay in ruin, pretty well forgotten. In 2002, the Monumentum Iudaicum Lodzense Foundation, an organization that helps preserve the Jewish heritage in Lodz, suggested that a museum of the ghetto be created in the Radogoszcz Station building." In any case, in Lodz I just can not imagine a separate article: There, the square does not exist, the station has been preserved as a monument, and the square never had any significance separate from the station.
