Jokes[edit]

If Ugley is, as previously stated, pronounced "Usley" (it wasn't when I lived nearby) then why all the jokes about the W.I.? -- Picapica 13:58, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I heard a woman from Ugley once married a man from a village in Hertfordshire. It was reported in the news under the headline "Nasty man marries Ugley woman" :) Sweetie Petie 23:28, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
For people who didn't get the joke above, there's a village called Nasty in Hertfordshire; see the Nasty, Hertfordshire article. —Lowellian (reply) 22:12, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Because millions of people don't know that it's pronounced "Usley", of course. But I see now that all mention of either the pronunciation or the WI has gone from the article. Maybe the claim of this pronunciation was a hoax, or something invented by the locals to try and escape from the jokes. — Smjg (talk) 11:28, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
