UBoat.net found out, that USS Gustafson did NOT sunk U857 http://www.uboat.net/boats/u857.htm

Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships says it did. There is more detail in Shadow Divers. The attack report says the hedgehogs hit something and exploded, after which there was a smell of oil but no debris. The war time assessment was something like "probable damage" upgraded after the war to "probable kill" (from memory, I don't have the book in front of me). In the absence of other evidence, I'm inclined to go with Gustafson. Kendall-K1 (talk) 16:03, 12 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
