Therian[edit]

Therians are individuals who involuntarily identify as an non-human animal spiritually or psychologically, or believe that they, in part or in whole, are non-physically non-human animals. They often adopt characteristics, behaviors, or traits associated with their perceived animal identity. Therianthropy is a complex phenomenon that intersects with spirituality, psychology, and personal identity. However, this aside, it's important to remember that therians are aware that they are biologically and physically human. Clinical Lycanthropy, however, is typically seen as a mental disorder where the identifyer believes they are physically a non-human animal or being, for whatever reason. They deserve respect, and help, and should not be ostracized from seeking community.

Types of Therians[edit]

Specific Animal Identification[edit]

Some therians strongly identify with a particular animal species, for example, perhaps a bobcat due to having simmilar non-human animalistic experiences, instincts, or urges that reflect what a bobcat might do or how a bobcat may live.

Broader Animal Identity[edit]

Others may have a more general identity for a group of animals, such as canines or felines, without pinpointing a specific species.

Nature Connection[edit]

Some individuals identify more with the natural world as a whole, feeling a deep kinship with all living creatures and ecosystems.

Origins[edit]

Spiritual Beliefs[edit]

For some therians, their identity is rooted in spiritual beliefs, such as the belief in past lives or the existence of animal spirits or totems.

Psychological Perspective[edit]

From a psychological standpoint, therianthropy may be seen as a form of identity expression or coping mechanism, allowing individuals to explore different aspects of their personalities and experiences.

Community[edit]

Online Communities[edit]

The internet has provided a platform for therians to connect with one another, share experiences, and offer support. Online forums, social media groups, and websites dedicated to therianthropy serve as hubs for community interaction.

Offline Gatherings[edit]

Some therian communities also organize offline events, such as meetups, conventions, or workshops, allowing members to connect face-to-face and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Expression[edit]

Artistic Endeavors[edit]

Many therians express their identity through creative outlets such as drawing, painting, writing, or crafting. Artwork often reflects their identity with their perceived animal identity and allows for exploration and self-expression.

Role-playing and LARPing[edit]

Some therians engage in role-playing activities or live-action role-playing (LARP) events where they can embody their animal identity in a safe and supportive environment.

Physical Manifestations[edit]

Some therians incorporate their identity into their physical appearance through tattoos, piercings, clothing, or accessories that symbolize their connection to their perceived animal.

Research and Understanding[edit]

Psychological Studies[edit]

Researchers in fields such as psychology, anthropology, and sociology conduct studies to explore the psychological mechanisms underlying therianthropy and its effects on individuals' well-being and identity development.

Community Perspectives[edit]

Some researchers collaborate with therian communities to gain insights into their experiences, beliefs, and needs, fostering mutual understanding and respect.

Overlap with Other Identities[edit]

Otherkin[edit]

While therianthropy specifically pertains to identification with animals, otherkin identify as non-human entities that may include mythical creatures, spirits, or beings from folklore.

Fictionkin[edit]

Fictionkin identify as fictional characters from books, movies, television shows, or video games, experiencing a deep connection with these characters as part of their identity.

Otherlink[edit]

Otherlink is a voluntary identity, where the linker chooses to identity as a non-human animal or other being willingly, for their own reasons that are NOT coping. The difference between a therian and a otherlink is that therians do not choose to have their identity, it's an involuntary identity that sticks with them from birth till death, whilst otherlink can be choosen whenever for whatever reason.

Personal Journeys[edit]

Self-Discovery[edit]

For many therians, the journey of self-discovery is ongoing and multifaceted. They may explore different aspects of their identity, beliefs, and experiences over time, evolving and growing in their understanding of themselves and their connection to the world around them.

Acceptance and Integration[edit]

Finding acceptance and understanding, both within themselves and from others, is often an important aspect of their journey. Therians may navigate challenges related to identity, stigma, and societal norms as they strive to live authentically and embrace their unique experiences.
