Hu Dongchao was one of several hundred Chinese railway engineers working in China during the early part of the 20th century. In the late 1920's Hu had only achieved the status of a works construction section engineer and not until the 1932( aged 60 and near retirement) briefly held the position of chief of a railway district bureau.
