Destiny not manifest[edit]

I don't think the "Manifest Destiny" concept fits the story at all. Manifest Destiny was an irrationalist doctrine that claimed that "destiny" overrode the Indians' rights to their land and justified theft of the land by whites. In Asimov's story there is no mention of any inhabitants of the solar system other than homo sapiens, so there is no moral bar in their settling other planets. I do agree that Asimov is creating a science-fiction counterpart to the Western frontier, without the ethical violations.

The real point of the story is that colonization of space would require a certain frame of mind, which the story calls the Martian Way: being able to tolerate unEarthly environments, and ingenuity in finding resources rather than depending on Earth for them.

Asimov's joke on the editor is actually a missed opportunity. Since the Saturn expedition mostly relies on technology rather than brute strength to mine the water, there is no reason why women could not have gone on the expedition as well as men. But the story is too rooted in the 50s to think of that. CharlesTheBold (talk) 15:10, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How much did Galaxy pay Asimov?[edit]

How many words long is "The Martian Way" and how much did Galaxy magazine pay Asimov for writing it? The main page of this article would be improved if it mentions this. If it does mention it, I must have missed it, and if that is the case, the main page of this article would be improved by making the issue of payment more prominent.
